ahhh crap I talked about this on the first recording but I had to rerecord it cause i messed up something. Basically the shield goes from Blue -> Yellow -> Red in color. When it regens your character gets a blue flash that washes over your character.
Also dont forget that Stout Heart sigil which you can buy from the vendor gives you an inherent hidden 25% damage reduction. This is additive with the 5% damage reduction when Stout Heart is active that you get from the defense mastery tree for a total of 30% DR when you have either the sigil, or a buff that grants Stout Heart. Steel Nerves 15% damage reduction is multiplicative with Stout Heart which means it is an effective 0.7*0.15 = +10.5% DR added to the 30% DR for a total of 40.5% DR when these are combined. You can also combine that with that crab sigil that gives you another 10% dmg reduction too. You can also add Stronghold Sigil to make you even more tankier.
Also and whats important, you dont get pushed around when you get hit. I had happen that something hit me, pushed me back and directly into another thing and before i could do a thing i got hit by that too. with Stout Heart you just take the hit.

@@ericlopez1984for me it was that for a good chunk of the game being aggressive and eating dmg was not as punishing and I still cleared fights. I didn't take the time to teach myself the good habits while the game was easy and by the time I got to proud difficulty I was like CRAP I gotta practice the timings for dodges xD Having a video makes a nice refresher as well as now that you have a better understanding of mechanics you can connect the dots.
Wow, really wish I knew this earlier. I spent so much time memorizing all their attacks that I was pretty confident with raw perfect dodges, but even then, they can still be inconsistent. I'm so excited to try this out now! Thanks for teaching this!

I'd caught some of those techniques from your other videos (like the guard-dodge one, or exploiting enemy attacks for invulnerability), but it's better to have a complete explanation, and this guide gives lots of new info too. This is probably the second time (a parry guide for Elden Ring would be the first) that I see a guide teaching defence (granted, I don't watch/read guides that often, but still). Usually it's just "kill them first" or "just dodge". I never liked going full damage because I'm not skilled enough to "just dodge", so I appreciate that a lot.

For people saying that you don't need guarding in this game... Try playing solo. I play with just the captain and I love the challenge. Also, if I reach critical I don't mash to respawn, I restart from the last checkpoint. Makes the game feel like a souls game, just not that ultra punishing. You can make some mistakes and still get away with it. But if you just mash and don't react, it's game over. Makes you really depend on perfect guard and dodge. It's waaay more fun than just destroying everything with a OP 4-man party imo. Try it out on a new save if you like, it's a totally different game.

And thank you for showcasing with gallanza fight (it stinks 😭) but I think one of the biggest take aways is the blocking while attacking I think will be huge (at least for me since I play percy) farming for terminus
Drain is crazy good, with 1 sigil you cap it which is 500 per dmg source with terminus weapon. Also running stoutheart and steel nerves for some dmg reduction you can just ignore alot of attacks and lifesteal it .
aside from the defensive sigils, ive tried the flight over fight build where your dodges are always perfect dodges and goes so well with nimble sigils and dodge payback. its an immortal build and fun to play
I’m running a flight build with yoda. Probably my favorite character and build in this game. And dodge payback is nice to add up for the ATK increase. (I just use it to stack I frame buffs with nimble tho)
Funny you make this vid. I've been trying to get the dodge sigil with crit or crit with dodge to give me more charges and bigger window. But my luck has been bad. Been telling my friends day one this type of game you need Def and utility not just dmg. They started to understand not long ago.

there are some "defensive" skills that actually increase your dps while also being comfy, unless you are speed runner level skilled player, do not run full offense builds
I was most of the time being carried in proud that most of my sigils are just for attacks/damage (I see them in most youtubers) and I'm having a hard time in that icy wolf thing. 🤣 I will now reevaluate my sigils. Thank you for this!

Honestly though. There are still a lot of missinformations flying around when it comes to the depths and numbers for this game. But I have to say: Your channel is so underrated. Your videos are amaizing and you even show off the things you are talking about. And since its easy to get damage cap, sloting in some good defensive skills is really valueable.
11:42 Theres also sigil called stronghold which just flatout increase your defense without any special condition required (low hp for garrison, charging for steady focus, stout heart present for steel nerves) but its rare and only drop in curio box
No it doesn't. It increases defense based on max HP. It's the defensive Stamina, like how Garrison is defensive Enmity. Still really good. But it has a condition.
I saw in another comment the extensions don’t stack but I just wanted to know if you could confirm or deny that leaflit? I haven’t got mines leveled up to where it would be over the (6s) mark. I need to get home and test the base duration of dodge s
So they do stack but not in a good way. They occur simultaneously so effectively they don’t stack. Basically you get both effects but you’re already invincible for 3 seconds. So basically you’re double invincible for 3 seconds LOL

I been looking for what improve guard does for the longest time. Everyone just talks about damage, but nothing about defense. As a Vane player this helps me out a lot. I'll be putting improved Guard on me now. I was taking damage when guarding attack as Vane and that ended up with me having a hard time staying in the fight

Which settings did you mean ? Or are you just talking about tilting the camera with the right hand stick of the controller ?
You have to turn all of the camera assists off, it makes it harder since you have to control it though... so play around with it until you find a setting that you like.
It’s when two things occur at the same time that covers multiple options. So in this case if you dodge too late you will instead block since you will get hit which locks you as blocking. But if you dodge at the right time then you dodge since you’re not being hit at the moment you dodge. It protects you in the case you fail.
would it be better to get a level 15 on each of nimble onslaught, nimble defense, and dodge payback, rather than a level 30 on any of them? That way, each sigil gives 2 seconds of extra invuln.

I havent tested it on Percival, but it should count as perfect guard. Narmaya's and Charlotta's built-in parries count as perfect guards. Lancelot's counts as perfect dodge (makes sense, as he is literally dodging). Yodarha has no built-in parry so the other commenter was probably talking about his counter skill. Those don't count as either perfect defense.

I was playing Vane for a while and got really frustrated in Proud because blocks would either break in one hit or the chip damage would still one-shot me through block for most attacks when fighting Gallanza and the Black Dragon, even with Improved Guard. Made me pick Io back up. If I'm being honest I've been thinking of dropping some damage in favor of more defensive sigils as a melee.

Ougi/SBA has an flaw thats involves the substitute buff. The substitute user may die on middle of ougi animation if the friend get hurt. Stout heart has an flaw thats makes Guts fails often.

Stronghold is inverse garrison, it gives you defense the higher your hp so its really good for making you live that first attack

Most likely not. As I play yoda and he has a parry move, however it does not count as a perfect guard

Just regular noncheated build. 4x DMG Cap+, 1 Crit+, 3 Supplemental, War Elemental, Awakening Sigil, 3 damage mods (life on the line, stamina x2)
