The Anarchist's Skatepark

- Skatopia is 88 acres of woods and farmland turned skatepark in Meigs County, Ohio. Known for anarchy and destruction, the land consists of two indoor bowls, a full pipe, a concrete outdoor bowl and The Museum of Skateboarding History - which houses more than 12,000 vintage skateboards.
Since suffering a traumatic injury, Founder and Owner, Brewce Martin now faces a changing of the guard as his son returns home and sees Skatopia moving forward in a new direction.
VICE travels to Skatopia during their busiest weekend of the year, Bowl Bash 2019, to tell the history of the family behind the skatepark - how this father and son manage to see eye to eye when it comes to the family legacy and how it might be emblematic of the changes in skate culture today.

Are we not even gonna talk about the dog that can climb a ladder
Estrada603 lmao. Skatopia is really about first, the skateboarding and second, their dogs.
My dog can do that too
Estrada603 dogs also make their own rules there
FUUUCK
Lol tr00
the son's rules are pretty reasonable considering the crowd
Yea
@Mr Free1 • 18 years ago doesnt look like they wanna go there to skate either
If those people don’t want to come and be part of the change then they don’t have to, nobody is coercing them into any type of behavior that they do not want to voluntarily associate with. The rules are simple to do no harm and take no shit, nothing has changed besides the fact that we are living in harmony with Natural Law Principles rather than continuing to promote a hedonistic lifestyle that does nothing but create more means for slavery to manifest. The dark occult ruling class of our world wants people to think that they can do whatever they want without consequences. Well I’m here to tell you there’s always consequences and even if it means that I segregate the mass majority of the people I would rather do what is right than to continue to promote something that leads to more slavery.
Definitely reasonable... The guys is trying to make s living with it and trying to keep people safe. Most skaters know it’s about support and pushing of others not the tearing down of others, those that are more than likely aren’t there to skate and drink beer they’re there for the party and purely about getting away with shit they can’t do else where.
Dont burn cars that weren't volunteered...
Fuck this I'm out!
I adore the mother, her acceptance really comes from her intelligence and her ability to be observant and be open to learn the realities of life. Too bad most people don't have that kind of ability and maturity.

Indeed. Unfortunately most mothers today, and especially Asian mothers, are not like that at all. No wonder mommy issues are such a prevalent problem
I'm impressed with your ability to see this in the mom.🫵✌️
I can’t believe how much more supportive this man’s mother is than mine seeing as he literally built an anarchistic skatepark for drifters and I just like to play the guitar.
I'm sorry your mother isn't supportive

I grew up in Gallia County, Ohio, 35 minutes from where Skatopia is. Back in 2007, not long after I started skating, there was a petition in Gallipolis, Ohio to get a skatepark built in town. It was brought to the city commission and agreed upon that if the total price of construction was raised that they would allow it. It was widely speculated & agreed upon that Brewce Martin donated 10k to get the park built. Got nothing but love for him as that skatepark was the catalyst for some of the best days of my life.
Absolutely adore his mother. An incredibly brilliant woman who accepts her son for who he is and truly learns about his passions.

My band played Bowl Bash in 2018 and a small party in 2019. Im honored to have been a small part of this masterpiece.
What sucks about his accident is that very little to no video footage exists of Brewce before the accident so it’s really hard for people to understand just how much it changed him. Everyone’s so glad his body is still here but it is inhabited by someone else. Luckily that someone else is still super cool!
He was so gnarly..his demeanor is still there, but that impulse and symbolism that was brewce has faded. He was the most rad skater I've ever seen. You would get vertigo from watching him carve the punisher. I saw a chic fall face first the entire 13 ft plus the 5'6 of her height right into damn near the lowest part of the bowl and first one to get was brewce he chucked his board mid air landed on knee pads and slid right to her aide. I've always heard in his time he was the fastest pro skater in the world and in history, at the time late 90s, early 00's
Even an anarchy you gota respect your mom
Aki Bru “Against all authority, except my mom” as they say
Miss Fortune lol
You don't really know the meaning of the word Anarchy, do you? It's not chaos, it's not crime, it's not decadence. Anarchy is a political system with no central authority; where people decide together the best course of action for every situation. It's pure utopia, there's no denying that...but it can work, and it has worked in the past in small isolated communities.
Read about the Paris Commune ;)
@@Albanez39 Facts, anarchy is the abolition of social heirarchies, essentially the belief that people can just take care of and respect each other.
@@gnosis2871 It's the absence or abolition of authority. After centuries of propaganda and ignorance, people started using the term for chaos, collective criminal activity and what not. When authority loses its power, or is assassinated in a coup or whatever, society will actually spiral down this chaotic dance of violence and crime...but it only happens because people were taught to respect and follow authority in every aspect, and the lack of it would obviously break society.
If people were taught that authority is not necessary (it's actually toxic) to maintain a healthy and harmonious society, we'd be able to eliminate these social hierarchies that dictate and control out lives.
The most obvious example is the actual situation with the Corona virus. It shows how brittle and delicate society is, let's hope people don't start breaking inside stores for a roll of toilet paper...which is incredibly stupid to be honest. Both in the US and in Northern Europe you can't find toilet paper anymore, but we don't have this problem here in the Mediterranean...and nor is it a problem in Africa or Asia. Can you guess why? We use bidets, and even poor families have some sort of washbowl or use the bathtub to wash their ass after taking a shit.
PS: We also use toilet paper to wipe most of it first, but we wouldn't go berserk if toilet paper was lacking...

There are two stop signs at the main gate.
No rules in anarchy- cant own shit. That is what the OP is getting at.
@@burnheretic3950 Yes, and a "stop" sign is a rule that goes against the basic premise of Anarchy.
@@timmccloskey3128 No. Anarchy does not mean "no rules" to the point you can't even have traffic controls installed. He picked me a bouquet of lovely wildflowers and was just so precious. There is a lot of history here. we got to hear a lot about it although it's kind of hard to remember things now, including the crazy crazy crazy story about his head injury that happened there and started to change things. @@janetlovesu anarchists are a kind of radical leftists
The “anarchy” that you people speak of is no anarchy whatsoever. It would either be a small, free market commune (assuming there are any luxuries and there is no government which of course there isnt).
With no government, there are no inherent rules. You cannot force someone to do a job. That would be authoritarianism. People would have the freedom to do whatever job they please. But what are you going to do with a community full of artists? Someone needs to be security. Someone needs to harvest food. Someone needs to prepare food. Someone needs to do maintenance to the property. The more people you have, the easier this goal can become. HOWEVER, the higher the need for a barter system becomes. Eventually, you are living in a free-market capitalist community that uses a barter system.
Ive been there twice now. first time was back in 2000 and at that time i did more BMX then skateboarding but 4 years later i went back on a solo trip and got some backside smiths in the deep end of the Punisher bowl. but i did have practice at my local park in Nashua NH R.I.P. New Park bowl.
