*Storytelling and Dance* (a short, concise version is posted at the Tutorial) Does a dancer tell a story through her dance? Maybe, and maybe not. The source for storytelling is pantomime. Obviously, ballet tells a story. Ballroom may tell a story. Primitive dances may tell stories of origins and gods. Many dances can tell a story. Do you tell a story as a line-dancer? It depends on you: do you want to? do you intend to? We can clearly see differences in some line dances. One of my Ki Ju favorites is Wish of the Wind. I fall in love every time I watch it. Am I imagining some romantic story? Is the story in my head? Compare it to The Break Up (Breaking up is hard to do). Clearly, the "story" I get from Wish of the Wind differs from the story I get from The Break Up. So, it certainly seems like dancers do tell a story. But is this story only in my head? What did the dancers intend? What story are you telling us with your dance? That's the question. But, where does this begin? Does it begin with the dancer? with the music and song? or with the choreography? Who sets the stage for a story to be told through dance? Well, THAT is an issue. Certain principles are clear: -- Some songs are better for storytelling than other songs. -- Some music (harmony, beat, etc.) lends itself better to storytelling than other music. -- Some choreography is _technically based_ on the music (NOT emotionally based), so the dance story is more abstract. Or, the technical choreo has no story, but is based only on movement. -- Is it true that no matter the music, no matter the song, no matter the choreography, a dancer can dance to tell a story? -- If you know the song, or it comes from your favorite movie, if you really like the song/music, then, I would think, it will be easier for you to tell a story through your dance. We often hear this: "Dance is about telling a story. A good dancer tells a good story." Well, maybe so, maybe not. It depends on many things, like the issues listed above. -- Ideal situation for storytelling? It seems to me, it would be this: When the music and song are perfect for telling a story through dance. And when the choreography is designed to tell that story. Then, of course, the dancer's job is made easier. But the challenge of good dancing is to capitalize on all these factors, and tell the story well. There are many ways to think about this. Here's one viewpoint ... Play the dance video, but turn off the sound. No music, no song. What do you see? feel? imagine? what impressions do the dancers make? What's the story? Is there a story? You may find a story somewhere -- if not in your mind, then in your heart. Now turn on the sound; it is even better if there is a song, especially a song you like. Now you have more information. What's the story this time? There are no wrong or right answers. However, the focus, the pressure, is now on the dancer to deliver a story you feel should come from the music and song. The story you get from dance may be a feeling, or something from your mind, or from your heart, or from your imagination -- _from perceptual interactions you have with the dancer_ . But it is a story. *So, my conclusion is this:* When you dance to a song with music, what story are you telling? Answer: Maybe you are telling the story of the song, or of the music, or of the choreographer. Maybe you are not telling any story, except to express certain abstract choreographed movements (perhaps derived from technical aspects of the music). And maybe you are telling you own story ... _your very own story_ . Let's remember this, *"The power of dance is to be able to take people to another place."* I think we agree on that. And to that, I would add: ... *Story, or no story.*

We often hear this: "Dance is about telling a story. A good dancer tells a good story." Well, maybe so, maybe not. It depends on many things, like the issues listed above.
-- Ideal situation for storytelling? It seems to me, it would be this:
When the music and song are perfect for telling a story through dance. And when the choreography is designed to tell that story. Then, of course, the dancer's job is made easier. But the challenge of good dancing is to capitalize on all these factors, and tell the story well.
There are many ways to think about this. Here's one viewpoint ...
Play the dance video, but turn off the sound. No music, no song. What do you see? feel? imagine? what impressions do the dancers make? What's the story? Is there a story? You may find a story somewhere -- if not in your mind, then in your heart.
Now turn on the sound; it is even better if there is a song, especially a song you like. Now you have more information. What's the story this time? There are no wrong or right answers. However, the focus, the pressure, is now on the dancer to deliver a story you feel should come from the music and song.
The story you get from dance may be a feeling, or something from your mind, or from your heart, or from your imagination -- _from perceptual interactions you have with the dancer_ . But it is a story.
*So, my conclusion is this:*
When you dance to a song with music, what story are you telling?
Answer:
Maybe you are telling the story of the song, or of the music, or of the choreographer. Maybe you are not telling any story, except to express certain abstract choreographed movements (perhaps derived from technical aspects of the music). And maybe you are telling you own story ... _your very own story_ .
Let's remember this,
*"The power of dance is to be able to take people to another place."*
I think we agree on that.
And to that, I would add: ... *Story, or no story.*

Some dancers and choreographers may disagree with me. I'm not so sure that dancers always tell a story (or even want to do so). But I think that good dancing does "take the viewer to another place" (as you & I have talked about many times before). Thanks, Ki Ju, always. We all have a good time here with you and your girls.💓
