I think the “overrated” part was where we’re all having trouble. But Angel isn’t coming from the perspective of just an audience member. She’s a WELL trained, classically trained actress. She knows what is necessary to fully develop a character. If you like at him from that angle, I get how she’s saying Denzel doesn’t really disappear with each character. John Leguizamo is an AMAZING actor who is a chameleon. He surprises me with each character.

I don't understand why people struggle with this. He's overrated because so many people label him the GOAT which is absolutely ridiculous. If we wanted only accuracy, we'd be watching the history channel. Actors become greats because of THEIR star power. The ability to draw a crowd to see them time after time is more difficult than being a technically great actor. People are fickle. Even if you've got us tangled now, we may not be tangled forever.
I heard Billy Porter once say that it's harder being the lead character because all the attention is on you and as an actor you don't have anyone to play off of. All the side characters, props and context is dependent on you. All roads lead to you. As a side character of supporting actor, you have room space to blend in and play off of other actors and other spaces. I think part of why people like Denzel, Leo and let's say Brad Pitt don't transform anymore is because they are leading men, the stars of almost every movie they play in. For a while there they also released new movies almost every year. We saw their faces a lot. Part of disappearing into a character has to do with not always having the camera or spotlight on you. It's also sometimes that some people just have very distinctive mannerisms and personalities. The same for me with Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Michael B Jordan, Beyonce etc. The only actor I can really think of that transforms: The LEGEND that is Meryl Streep. Even though you can still always see it's Meryl, you look forward to all the ways she's going to be a vessel and allow you to see into this character's world. Being a good actor is hard. Being a lead actor/actress seems even harder to me.

However he does not hold #1 in my opinion because of the points I made in the video. My top 5 list is: 1. Jeffrey Wright 2. Don Cheadle 3. Denzel Washington 4. Jamie Foxx 5. And Moonlight is in my top 3 favorite films. i love films that use silence as a huge part of the narrative. i also love films that critique and hold mirrors to society at large. To me, that's what good art does.

I had recently watched Malcolm X. A then watched Who Killed Malcolm X on Netflix. Denzel played Malcolm to perfection. He even had the voice down packed.

Doesn't make him a bad actor and hes actually a great one however he's never played a role where the character could be seperated from denzel. We love to see denzel so that's not a problem. However I can't recall a time where I watched a movie and he became something unrecognizable to the audience. An example would be heath ledger playing the joker. How heath ledger transformed himself in that role put him on a different pedestal acting wise. We have never seen denzel perform a role in that manner. That does not mean that Denzel is not a great actor however he isn't very versatile in the way that heath ledger was in that role. If you compared heaths role in Brokeback mountain to the role in Batman he would be almost unrecognizable. if you did the same with denzel in any role it would just be denzel still a great actor but just denzel.

He CAN play other roles but when casting takes place, roles are filled depending on who fits them the best. They will always come to him with that role because it sells and people know what to KINDA expect from him before even watching the movie. Anyone who calls an actor a 'star' is a muppet with zero credibility in the discussion from the outset. Demonstrating that you are blinded by their fame and reputation and not for their talent or actual ability. Denzel is overrated. I'd go as far as to even call him a poor actor. He has absolutely no range to play anything other than himself and watching him play himself is comparable to watching paint dry.
I think Denzel just has legendary traits that everyone tries to imitate that some people may feel this way. But Denzel is definitely versatile! John Q and Alonzo Harris from Training Day are not the same person! But they both have the same walk and face mannerism. Thats my opinion though.

I think Angels true defense is the mannerisms of the role of the character the actor portrays. Leo in Django was spot on because he actually went off script during that broken skull scene and hurt himself and it got him gold. Jamie Foxx was almost the second guy during that scene. It's all about how the actor utilizes the characters mannerisms. In my opinion, you can replace Denzel, Will and Jeffery in alot of their movies with another actor. Guys like Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Laurence Fishburne and Leo Decaprio, it would be difficult to replace them in some of their respective movies.

Tony immediately proved her point. Denzel Washington is a star for basically playing himself while someone like Jeffery Wright can totally transform himself and is a simply "well known." Denzel Washington is greatest at picking really great scripts. He never goes outside of the Denzel box.
Entertainment is largely about branding, as well. Lots of directors hire Denzel because they want him to do "Denzel". Many times, they don't want him to do something different, because they want his fans to come see it. He's not necessarily a method actor.
This is the thing about Denzel: He doesn't have a Matrix or Batman DK, or Inception. What Denzel does is take a regular role like "Man on Fire", "The Negotiator" and makes it absolutely memorable. Some of these Chameleons are Chameleons because they don't do anything great, and stand out to be memorable.

I actually agree with Angel on this, except with Malcolm X. He absolutely crushed that role. And there are plenty of actors that do the same thing in every movie. I just have to say this: I think Roman J Isreal Esquire was one of Denzel's best performances. It's one of my favorites at least. He played a very compelling character - a man who values justice above pretty much everything but whose experiences force him to compromise his ethics. It seemed like a very different role for him. I think he got an oscar nomination, but I wish the film as a whole got more praise. If you haven't seen it, then I would definitely recommend.

I’ll have to agree but only in the sense that Denzel never adapts to the character. For instance no one can name one time where Denzel ever did an accent other than the one he’s always had. He’s been in at least 3 movies set in the south especially Louisiana and he was supposed to be from that area but still kept his New York accent. Excellent actor but he does not adapt. He just does his Denzel thing. I still love him as an actor though.

I heard Billy Porter once say that it's harder being the lead character because all the attention is on you and as an actor you don't have anyone to play off of. All the side characters, props and context is dependent on you. All roads lead to you. As a side character of supporting actor, you have room space to blend in and play off of other actors and other spaces. I think part of why people like Denzel, Leo and let's say Brad Pitt don't transform anymore is because they are leading men, the stars of almost every movie they play in. For a while there they also released new movies almost every year. We saw their faces a lot. Part of disappearing into a character has to do with not always having the camera or spotlight on you. It's also sometimes that some people just have very distinctive mannerisms and personalities. The same for me with Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Michael B Jordan, Beyonce etc. The only actor I can really think of that transforms: The LEGEND that is Meryl Streep. Even though you can still always see it's Meryl, you look forward to all the ways she's going to be a vessel and allow you to see into this character's world. Being a good actor is hard. Being a lead actor/actress seems even harder to me.

Everyone misunderstood the point that she was trying to make. She messed up by saying the word overrated. Denzel plays Denzel. Doesn't make him a bad actor and hes actually a great one however he's never played a role where the character could be seperated from denzel. We love to see denzel so that's not a problem. However I can't recall a time where I watched a movie and he became something unrecognizable to the audience. An example would be heath ledger playing the joker. How heath ledger transformed himself in that role put him on a different pedestal acting wise. We have never seen denzel perform a role in that manner. That does not mean that Denzel is not a great actor however he isn't very versatile in the way that heath ledger was in that role. If you compared heaths role in Brokeback mountain to the role in Batman he would be almost unrecognizable. if you did the same with denzel in any role it would just be denzel still a great actor but just denzel.

I think Angels true defense is the mannerisms of the role of the character the actor portrays. Leo in Django was spot on because he actually went off script during that broken skull scene and hurt himself and it got him gold. Jamie Foxx was almost the second guy during that scene. It's all about how the actor utilizes the characters mannerisms. In my opinion, you can replace Denzel, Will and Jeffery in alot of their movies with another actor. Guys like Jim Carrey, Johnny Depp, Laurence Fishburne and Leo Decaprio, it would be difficult to replace them in some of their respective movies.

I just have to say this: I think Roman J Isreal Esquire was one of Denzel's best performances. It's one of my favorites at least. He played a very compelling character - a man who values justice above pretty much everything but whose experiences force him to compromise his ethics. It seemed like a very different role for him. I think he got an oscar nomination, but I wish the film as a whole got more praise. If you haven't seen it, then I would definitely recommend.

I’ll have to agree but only in the sense that Denzel never adapts to the character. For instance no one can name one time where Denzel ever did an accent other than the one he’s always had. He’s been in at least 3 movies set in the south especially Louisiana and he was supposed to be from that area but still kept his New York accent. Excellent actor but he does not adapt. He just does his Denzel thing. I still love him as an actor though.
Angel, now that I think about it, you’re right. Denzel definitely has some mannerisms that show up in every movie. I love Denzel, but you are absolutely right.
