    Tysm for this, I have about 20 old hand saws passed down through my family. I Wanna sharpen, and use a few of them. Love your work Rob! Wish I could come work for ya, would be a dream :)

    Rob, thanks for this video. I have only sharpened larger saws with coarse tpi and dovetail saws looked like a challenge. After watching your video, I was brave enough to try sharpening my cheapo crown gent saw. it cuts beautifully now. What I realized is that I don't have to see individual teeth as much as I need to feel them with the saw file.
    Thanks for sharing this video. Now I don't know why people are so afraid to sharpen their saws anymore ;)

    Thanks for your helpful vids. I keep breaking teeth off when setting my 10-tpi handsaw. What-the-h!? I suspect I may be pushing too low on the tooth? So, what do you say is the correct way to set teeth? Do you bend just the very tip of the tooth over?

    What saw set tool do you use & do I need two ,one for rip blades and one for fine crosscut saws?
    Have a GREAT DAY Thanks for all the videos and the adjust star is worth every penny.

    Rob, do you have any tips as to how I could cut some 22ppi teeth into the front of my saws?

    Why didn't you joint it? Wouldn't even one or two swipes with a bastard file have been sufficient to joint that saw? I tried setting a an old fine tooth saw and failed miserably, and I'm a little anxious about working on my recently acquired dovetail saws.

      Rob is right.but u really only need to joint if the teeth are all different heights or the tooth line isn't straight or ur changing the teeth.

    Hi Rob, how many teeth per inch is your dovetail saw? I've heard that 20tpi is quite a lot harder to sharpen than say a 15 or 16 tpi saw.Have you found this to be true?

    keeping the file perpendicular for the entire length? the reason for question is due to paul sellers advice

    • @vincenttai8211998
      @vincenttai8211998 9 лет назад +1

      Cosman uses his dovetail saw for dovetails. The way he sharpens creates zero rake, fast and efficient for ripping. Paul Sellers gives advice and advocates for a relaxed rake, this slows down the saw a tad but allows u to do a bit of cross cutting. This is okay for an amateur, but as you delve deeper into woodworking and sawing, hybrid saw tooth patterns lose their brilliance and you lean towards having two saws with two saw teeth pattern. Faster and more efficient for a man who makes his living from his craft.

      +Vincent Tai pls get ur facts in order before posting.Paul relaxes the rake for the 1st 2in only it's exactly the same as having smaller teeth at the toe of the plate.

    • @patchedupdemon7104
      @patchedupdemon7104 9 лет назад +1

      +Vincent Tai all Paul's saws are cut with 0 rake.only the 1st 2in are relaxed.and ur comment about he relaxes the take for cross cutting is numb too.he acutualy sharpens 12tpi rip teeth for cross cutting which is fast and means less saws.oh and they are just as efficient as. rosscut teeth.

      +russell lowe pretty sure I don't need to educate the guy on Paul sellers when he has knowledge on him, I don't need to berate him about 1-2 inches. Relaxing the rake isn't exactly the same as smaller teeth, rake makes everything easier and cleaner, I know people who struggle with a 20tpi zero rake pattern. Now; is numb? I'm going to assume you meant to say dumb, I do have to say u look foolish for paraphrasing half my comment on cross cutting, relaxes the rake for cross cutting is my point which apparently u think is dumb and then you you say it yourself. Also apparently you thing it's just as efficient as a crosscut. Well tbh crosscut doesn't have a set in stone tooth pattern but generally you balance out rake and fleam to produce clean cuts. A relaxed rake zero fleam saw may well fly through cross cuts but loses efficiency when one has to take the time to plane endgrain heavily to remove breakout of fibre. I would argue a saw with some fleam is far more efficient then zero fleam

    • @vincenttai8211998
      @vincenttai8211998 9 лет назад

      +russell lowe if one wants a good hybrid pattern, bad axe has established a pretty good balance of fleam and rake. Saves time and money on tools. Me? I like having efficient saws, each for the job, I used a single saw for rip and crosscut with my own work until I saved up. Now I have a rip for ripping and a crosscut that leaves glass smooth endgrain fast. I can use a zero rake five tpi disston handsaw with relaxed small teeth at the tip, which I did for a month or two, flys through endgrain leaves a mess. If I relaxed the rake, now I have finer tear out that looks like cracked concrete instead of a crater. Sometimes fleam is just the missing element. Fleam, fleam, fleam. Don't get me started on stoning set, or polishing with a ceramic triangle file, or stoning the set and then measuring with a vernier...

      I had got used to watching You tube add free, but they are everywhere now. But, a three minute add for something I have no interest in at all, and with a very annoying presenter, is a bit much. especially as there was another one after that. It seemed longer than your video.
