This is why i loved Rango, honestly my favourite film of 2011. Fantastic animation too...and the fact that its key framed, and not motion captured. good job ILM
Excellent movie! I'm studying animation and I simply love the way this movie fell out of the norm and brought something fresh to the table. I'm hoping it wins best animated picture!
We have a very mature and robust RenderMan pipeline so supporting it is not an issue. That said, we use a number of renderers, they each have strengths and weaknesses.
ILM you are the best! Looking forward to all the movies you are working with because i know it always will be great eye candy and a awesome movie! Keep up the good work! :)
I'm not sure what you're asking here. If you mean did ILM produce the film the answer is no - that was Paramount and Nickelodeon, if you are referring to what seen on the screen, yes ILM was responsible for the visuals.
@ILMVisualFX It's an excellent history, screen play and the visual effects are wonderful!!! Do not listen to those who know nothing and have not seen the film.
dang, i'm super impressed knowing that it wasn't motion capture but keyframes instead. just getting into animation at A&M and, at least at my level, it's hard work.
Great insight! But one question raises.. Will eventually Zbrush replace traditional clay during pre-production and those guys who work with it?.. or are sculptors in such companies efficient in both digital/traditional worlds?
its called getting creative. something we need in movies now. but why does it matter? this movie came out fantastic, as long as the script, vioce work, and direction and this amazing animation works which it does then im glad they did it
people always ask , what software , what hardware ILM used , i think it dosent matter... i mean; not that much! its a part of whole process but not very ultimate part... Artists are the most important part and ILM got most talented ones !! They spend time, do research and really think before making just anything ... just saying
yes it was there on purpose because they talked about the man with no name and reference him throughout the movie. And since its a western Gore Verbinski was paying homage to it
Exactly, is the process behind, the talented artists, what made things look like that, rango have the most hyperrealistic textures I've seen in an animated movie, so it takes time and experience from the artists to make the ilumination and the colors work like that. Whatever software they used is irrelevant...
So you think other renders like mentalray cannot possible create such effects at ease? I agree that renderman had the greatest rate of evolvment over these years. But mentalray would have received customized supports too...right? Even then, renderman was selected. Why?

Thanks a lot. Rango's VFX are revolutionary. Pure genius.
This is amazing ! I found the movie excellent both on a story and visual level. Great Job ILM, Keep us dreaming !
The movie is awesome! I love the graphics, it looks so real!

Awesome!! Rango should Win the Oscar for best Animated film!!

You guys do magical things. Keep up the awesome work.
I love these videos, please keep it up and post more.

great video keep uploading this stuff I'll watch it all, you guys do awesome work :) real magic keep it coming :)
The artists are referring to this (Rango) being ILM's first animated feature film - not Nickelodeon's.

Man, when I get to Hollywood someday, I'd love ILM to make an animated film for me!

Born in San Francisco... moved to New York when I was little, in a year or so, I will be moving back. :D
quite interesting!
i really like the chars!
which softwaere du u use for modelling in rango?
Yes, we use Renderman.
Yes, Maya and Zeno.
Man, when I get to Hollywood someday, I'd love to be a part of ILM!
Any chance of making a featturete of Crash talking about the concept art?
Amazing Work!!
Thanks For Answering. What I was asking is you spent money to make this movie(considering this was your own movie project).
Were the proprietary software for hair, fur, and feathers done in Zeno?
That codger's name is William Fergus.
What was the native resolution that Rango was rendered in?
Thanks for sharing !!!
Are you using Renderman for rendering jobs or some other software?
great as usual.
i want to work their sooo bad is there a college you recommend for people like me who want to go into visual effects and work there one day?
No worries - that's what we're here for ;)

We have our own proprietary software for hair/fur, etc.
Thanks!
Was this your Project? Or were you just doing the animation and other stuff?
how long did it take to render one character ?
Is it your company or the producer who hire the concept artist/storyboard creators. I want to know who to send my portfolio to one day.
Did you still use Zeno to animate Rango?

I wonder what the computer spec are of their computers!!
@halocritian There's a profound and deeply existential reason however I suppose you could sum it up by saying it was to entertain audiences.
yes it was there on purpose because they talked about the man with no name and reference him throughout the movie. And since its a western Gore Verbinski was paying homage to it
brilliant!
How on earth do you go about getting a job at ILM?

The Spirit of the West was inspire by Clint Eastwood
very cool

I really hope one day I work with you. :)
If they make a sequel and they don't call it Rango Unchained i'll be very disapointed.
nice video
2K
wonder!
Was the human in this movie supposed to be Clint Eastwood? They look exactly the same.
@veebanjo :D
No need to go to Hollywood, just make your way to San Francisco...
but not many people give a crap about them..that what make it a shame..
Must have been a coincidence...
I'm not sure that saying was ever relevant...
coincidence...
yeah right.
