Ep. 95) “ARE HOLIDAYS A LIE?” (EP. 95)
It’s important to know where our customs come from and what they mean to us. As important as it is to understand our customs, it’s important to understand our own lineage and what was important to them. In this episode we started off by talking about holidays, the history of these holidays and what they mean to us moving forward. That conversation snowballed into a culture conversation where this episode took us all on a journey we didn’t anticipate. Hope you can find value in this conversation!

This was a great conversation on so many levels! Us Black People have a complex history, and I enjoy conversations about the complexity. It encourages growth, love and respect.

Here’s perspective: we were forcefully brought here. We were and still are treated horrifically on the very grounds we built and managed. And this country up until a few years ago considered us 3/4th a person. So…that’s where the disconnect is Jalon. If that adopted kid is kidnapped from his parents loving home in the middle of the night, physically, sexually, mentally, and emotionally abused, told he must forget everything his parents ever taught him, including his language and spirituality and misrepresented in every way possible, then wouldn’t that person have reason to want to run away from “home”. We weren’t adopted. We were taken.

This episode is needed in such a time as this. As a Black American woman. I do feel we need to embrace our culture and while it is good to know your roots its also important to contribute to the culture and country in which we are born. GREAT Convo ! I'd love to see 19 Keys or Pastor RC BLAKES on for the 100th episode. God bless you brothers !!!

I'm shocked that you guys were talking about culture and NO ONE mentioned the elephant in the room, CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!!!! Consistently things that we have created have been appropriated by others and now they claiming theirs. Our foods/ music/ dance/ etc. That's a discussion that needs to be have. 🖤💪🏾💯

I position myself to be able to teach to the masses, including children. So I am teaching my two year old son not to use profanity to articulate his thoughts, and I ask other who are around him to actively not cuss while in front of my son. So that my son will be able to influence masses with appropriate communication as well.

with some of the comments made during the podcast concerning black americans and black american culture...its seems that it was learned second hand or assimilated. there is more to learn about black american culture than what is already known. many melanated people that come to america are default-black americans by law due to the color of skin versus black americans that are from america. this is a stark difference within the diaspora that should be acknowledged. it is not a weakness it is indeed a strength that has yet to recognized.

Programming started straight out the womb. From then up until now, we are all programmed and unfortunately most are comfortable in something that seems so normal despite the history of it. So there’s an excuse for everything a person doesn’t want to unlearn/De-Program from. That of course including all the holidays they spoke on. Because if it’s so much about “family, why can’t ppl create their Own holiday surrounded around family that doesn’t cater to the history of what those holidays are? 🤷🏾‍♀️ But someone else can program u to celebrate a holiday that they created, not only for their monetary gain but also with the sense of what it means for black ppl 🤔 And to celebrate one and not the other is crazy. If u can put your own perspective/approach on the holidays “they created, that originally stand for ONE thing on a specific date, And that make it “OK, then why not create your own holidays and remove and recreate the energy of it all??🤷🏾‍♀️

My sentiments exactly. I stopped celebrating holidays when I was 20 years old at the recognition of the subliminal programming toward my child that I WAS DOING, and it made me sick. I celebrated them my whole life, but cut it cold turkey when I educated myself on the history of all of them. People still assume it has to deal with ‘religion’ as to why I don’t celebrate but in reality it simply rubs up against my ethos and moral code to just blindly follow a colonized tradition in the ‘name’ of ‘cheer and giving’ when in reality that’s the capitalist’s biggest quarter of the year. No thanks. The actual blind following the pretend blind is what I call it.

It’s so important to have a relationship with God. We can’t teach freedom and oppression. It’s traumatizing.
With this platform, you men must take responsibility for the information you put out. Take time to study the topics, brief the topics, and have full understanding. People are looking up to you for sound advice.
Jalon- you are the closest to having knowledge of God. You should be teaching the brothers in better justice. Not the world but God, Jesus. And you owe Omar an apology for not considering his feelings when you didn’t agree with him not honoring thanksgiving. Now that he know the truth. You should be asking him for the truth. Instead of debunking.
Always stand on truth. That’s how you stand on business. Peace and love always.

No I would not like to say my Grandmother lives on Nigeria, Eritrea or any other African country. That goes against everything Jalon said prior. I’m proud that my roots are in America despite the ugliness of our history. We as African Americans shouldn’t have to wish we were from another country. Why do you think ppl from other countries are coming here? Respect needs to be shown to African American ppl period.

When it comes to the type of language I use, how I treat others, how I conduct business, etc, I try to imitate Jesus and not those in positions of authority. Jesus never used vulgar language so if I do so, can I really call myself a true follower of Christ? or am I a follower of other people. Not one holiday celebration is backed by scripture. Every one of them have an origin that God is not apart of. Both birthday accounts recorded in the Bible shared how someone lost their life for the amusement of the individual being “celebrated”.. God’s word doesn’t speak highly of birthdays. Even the Bible says “A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.” Ecclesiastes 7:1
We must be humble enough to learn to unlearn to learn what we’re actually supposed to live by. We must be careful going about things that have been normalized by other humans. Not all humans are followers of Christ and servants of the Most High.

So the Fried Chicken thing…usually when anyone brings up how all black love fried chicken and 🍉 it’s in a derogatory manner. Pls remember that we live on country with descendants of our oppressors. So when they address those things of course it is taken offensively but it’s all about the delivery and who’s delivering. Amongst black ppl, we all know we love those things and they are apart of our culture. Just like Nigerians have Jollof, white ppl have pumpkin pie, Asians have pho, etc.

Mmmm.. I don’t agree with Jalon, Indigenous folks are still suffering from their land being stolen. I live in Canada and I see it. I get that many of us have been conditioned to celebrate these holidays as a day of getting together with family, BUT, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t still sting another group of people. I think it would be nice to hold everyone to a higher standard. The change starts with us acknowledging and doing the work. I also have conflicting energy around the holidays as well, but I think acknowledging the pain and the strife is important regardless.

I also was told Santa is not real. Why? because my Dad didn’t want us thinking some old white man is responsible for the gifts when my parents worked very hard and struggled to get us those things. It didn’t really ruin it for us because we still got gifts. Now do I enjoy the holiday time? yes. It can be festive (also tense/stressful) & there’s food and the tradition is soooo engrained. We should be able to reprogram or respect others for trying to.

Aye what’s up fellas. Love the pod. Been a long time fan of all of you guys. Just a little bit of constructive criticism from a podcast app listener. Maybe consider inserting some transition sounds in and out of commercials. As a podcast app listener the commercials come in very abrupt and interfere with the flow of the conversation. A lot of times it’ll be in random spots mid convo, mid sentence at a higher volume than what you guys are speaking. Not sure if you listen to the Rory and Mal podcast but they do this kinda “swoosh” sound so the listener knows there’s a commercial about to start. It’s very quick and subtle but it’s a heads up. Once again, love the pod. Congrats on almost hitting 100 episodes and 50k subs. Can’t wait to see what you do in the future

Also if you want family time then spend your days and time differently and authentically love on your tribe and or community. Side note. Pagan is only a term that means something that is different than what you believe. Christians love to be Christians except when it’s time to walk by what the words actually says. I can’t do the religion thing but if YOU do then at least abide by what it says. In this video I wish that you all would have given some wisdom or words to the days that are meant to be holy and reverenced

Nice n Neat, I’m a 27yr old white female. I’d strait up love to come on your pod by the way. I’ve been dating my fine ass man, Noah, who is a black American. (I’m a Bronco, bish!🐴🧲 #Duke&Omar, you know) He’s an athlete in the bodybuilding space and so am I, just not as aggressive as him. As he is investing his time into shows and completions as a 23 year old fresh in the space. I loved what you men had to talk about on the biggest podcast in LA, this time around. I would just like to say as a now women who grew up in the inter cities of St. Louis until I was 9 years old, who then moved to the high ends of Aspen, Colorado for my life moving forward… I was immersed in the black culture as a young white girl. All of my friends were black and I saw, smelled, tasted everything your describing as your own (iykyk) I didn’t know it, but my subconscious moving forward into my women hood was fixed on black men. I feel I straight up manifested my partner because there’s like literally 20 people of black color who live in Aspen full time. The moment I saw him, I knew he was my boyfriend and soulmate… come to find d out he knew it too. I want to speak on the melting pot mentality and the culture of America.
He was an adopted kid raised in a White house hold as an only child when he was biologically born with 3 other siblings who he doesn’t even know. Tough, I can feel that pain. However both of our circumstances lead us to being the exact right ones for eachother.. and this is a black white, America. We stand together now! That’s how it is as of present reality! And there is NO ONE else id rather stand with on our country.

Thanks for sharing a bit of yours and your boyfriend's stories. I wish you both goodness, joy and a wonderful life and hope that in your journey, you both find genuine friends and community that supports, love and identifies with you both and the family you build (if you both intend to build a family). I think love is a beautiful thing and given both of your stories, it's great that you both met/and now have each other. God bless you all. ☺
