Amazing play by Magnus, even though this tournament doesn't really matter and is mostly a practice gig for the players. I'm sure Duda will draw consequences out of this and will make life much harder for Magnus next time they will meet over the board.
'Revenge is a Powerful Motivator' - Very true. My wife uses it all the time by insanely shopping on my credit card whenever I try to prove her wrong in any argument & almost succeed (of course I don't win).
After watching all these Magnus games I've noticed he really likes pawns. He likes to aggressively push them and he likes to trade down into pawn endgames.
There's a story Rickson Gracie told about competing angry. He established a crushing, dominating position over his opponent due to his superior skill and held him there, torturing him as the minutes ticked by, his vision red and his only objective to cause his adversary the worst pain without defeating him. Rickson's second called out to him that they were running short on time and Rickson came to and finished his opponent quickly and efficiently. From then on, he viewed fighting on emotion as a waste of energy.

@@khfghmfgj it’s not quite so simple. White can’t play check then capture on c4 as then bxd5 and black is better. You have to play the check, then nxf6 and whatever black plays they’re worse. The knight on C4 actually gets away in the best lines for black but it’s still a losing position. I was interested so put the position into stockfish as usual super GMs seeing moves ahead of mortals.

The move that I did not care for was K-F1 by GM Duda, it just looked bad. I mean with 2 pawns behind it was amazing how long the game lasted. Great game!
At 16:16, doesn't Ke2 by white force a draw? The key is Rf1 is no longer check, so white can respond with Rh7+. If the black king leaves the defense of the pawn, the white rook can take it, say, Kg4, Rg7+, black must play Kh3 to defend the pawn. Also, if say, Kg3 .. Rg7+, Kh2 .. Rh7+ .. Kg1, white can move the rook up and down the h file, and black can only move the rook, since the white K controls f1 and f2. If black plays Ra1, say, intending Ra2+, then white will respond to the check with Ke3, and after black's Kf1, white gives check. The black K must either block the pawn again or play to the e file, when white plays the rook to the g file. The pawn cannot queen, because the black rook has moved off the first rank, but if Ra1, white takes the pawn, and if Kf1, white repeats checking the K. Am I missing something?
I think moving the king to e2, creates an escape square for the black king to g1. And thats a very well known won position in this endgame. Because you cant go on checking the black king. The king will slide to g1 after a couple of checks.
And Black will create a sort or bridge with his rook on the 4th rank for his king to come out of the g1 square without facing check, allowing him to queen the pawn. I hate "studying" theory but thats how they say its done.

Nahh if the black rook moves to f8 then the white king can just move to f2 is not a checkmate although if the king did indeed do this the g2 pawn can just move to g1 promote to queen and its game over
But promoting in G1 isn't checmate cause the rook/king itself can capture it after the promotion because it's one move further from the king and it's hanging.
Also, after Magnus plays Bc8, Duda can beat back the attack with Bf2 .. Qh5 (forced), h4. It being a rapid game, both players doubtless missed a lot of stuff (although either one would wipe me out if they had 10 sec per move and I had two minutes).
