Reverse path reverses the direction of the path. Very useful when placing text on the path. If the path is a circle, reverse path will take the text from the outside of the circle to the inside.
No only that, but it has an important effect on how fills happen in combined paths. For instance, a text "O" is created with two circles which are combined, one inside the other, with opposite path directions - therefore the fill occurs between the two circles, thereby creating the glyph "O".

***** grouping just groups the selected objects. Any changes you make affect all of those grouped objects. The union function unites two or more objects into one object. The color will be the same, etc. In a group the objects are still individual objects. As for the setup, Inkscape can be configured and move things around. Honestly I get a little confused on changing the setup. Maybe Nick can shed a little more light on that subject.

I don't actually know what cut path does but what it looks like is that it took an intersecting line from the two nodes which were at the corners of the intersection between the two objects and made an object out of it. Awesome videos!

This was a very useful video. I have a much better understanding on what some of these things do. To help you a little, the "combine" is useful when creating "satin stitch" paths for use with the "Inkstitch" extension - reverse path is also used when making the satin stitch path

After messing with open source software like GIMP after Photoshop I was completely put off and didn't even want to try Inkscape fearing a similar experience. definitely great video ... these basics are foundation stones of any software (or science, or anything) and I'm glad that somebody explaines Inkscape this way. Yes there are many tutorials, but those are only combination of the things explained here and create bounds to creativity
Nick, The Cut Paths function affects the perimeter of shapes instead of the enclosed areas. Cut Path uses the line on top (it doesn't need to be closed) to cut the line enclosing the area on bottom. The points of intersection become two nodes each -- one for each new path. Since the bottom path was cut, it is no longer closed. In fact, it will also cut open paths in the same fashion.
This was super helpful. I came here to learn about one specific function, but learned a bunch of other stuff, too. I knew what Path > Difference did, but I didn't know how to specify which object was cutting a piece out of which (it'd always worked out the way I wanted it to).
Very nice tutorial, thank you very much ! I think is worth mentioning that you can break apart overlapping sub-objects if your object was created using combine (in your example you cannot separate the two overlapping circles because you've used union)

Has been a long time since I've had time to watch Inkscape clips and I love Logos By Nick. Always brilliant. I always forget which to use out of Difference, Intersection, Exclusion and Division. I think that the "Cut Path" operation takes the two "line-points", where the objects are touching each other. It creates a line which cuts the lower object.
What program do you use to display your mouse and keystrokes? I've found a handful programs that display full keyboards, but I enjoy the added clarity yours adds to your tutorial without being cluttered. And thank you for the great work you put into your videos! I have spent hours learning this program by following along with your videos.
I am so much of a novice at Inkscape, I hesitate to ask a question. Could you tell me what type of computer you are using, what it's resources are and so on. I am using a Windows 10 computer with an I3 processor and 12 gig of memory. It takes my computer so long to do the different things in Inkscape and will actually stop the machine sometimes and I have to close the program. I'm not sure if it's me, my computer or the software. Thanks for taking the time to create your tutorial videos. I hope to, at some point in time, be able to understand what it's all about. I know, at 75 I'm pushing the envelope a bit.
You're not alone, it's as if it was driven by chance. My DELL Precision M4800 runs it without any trouble, but the very same model at work wouldn't handle it... Only difference is that I don't have an antivirus software (which can slow the computer down) other than the built-in Windows Defender.
Can you point me in a direction for what you consider the best set of tutorials for learning Inkscape. I have watched so many videos that my eyes are crossed. The biggest problem I have is that the person doing the videos either talks too fast for my old ears or they are not in full command of the English language and their accent is hard for me to understand. I can't seem to work with scanned scroll saw patterns. I import them but from that point I can't seem to make anything work the way it does in the instructional videos.I don't know if I'm saving them in the wrong format or what. I have tried both .pdf and .jpg but when trying to use the "trace bitmap" that's when my computer just spits at me. I seem to end up with a path that has so many nodes, it is impossible to work with. What am I doing wrong?
Oh, well, I'm not a frequent user of Inkscape to be honest, but it's definitely something I'd like to be good at later in the future. So far I've bookmarked a few channels here ou RUclips, two of them I know have a website with tutorials and they all speak with what sounds to me a good English: Leigh Whitaker Logos By Nick (this channel) TroyTube Now as for your problem with trace bitmap, I think I might have an idea of what's wrong. Maybe the images are too big, or most likely they have so many colors that Inkscape is unable to tell outlines out of it the way you'd expect. I remember long ago I attempted to vectorize a picture of me once :D you know because of the potential of resizing it indefinitely... I don't remember having succeeded at that. To do things like that I think the first step is to reduce the colors in the picture or adjust the program so that it considers two or more similar colors as one; creating less shapes.
From the help menu: Path → Reverse (Shift+R) (keyboard shortcut only works with Node Tool): Reverse path: Reversing the direction of a path will affect things like the order in which nodes are selected by Tab and in the direction of Markers (e.g., arrows). New in v0.48: It is possible to display “harpoons” indicating path direction by selecting Show path direction on outlines in the Inkscape Preferences dialog. The outline must be visible (toggle on either by selecting Always show outline in the dialog or clicking the icon in the Tool Controls).
"Cut Path only cuts the bottom object's stroke and removes any fill (this is convenient for cutting fill-less strokes into pieces)". at least that is what the inkscape site says.

To clarify for juniors like me- first you need to go to: TEXT -> PUT ON PATH and then you can do PATH -> REVERSE.
Also, before that, gotta convert the circle or square that you draw into a path using Path>Object to Path (for the Reverse thing to work)

Even more important if you are using Inkscape to control a cnc machine of any kind. Path direction matters a lot in this case.
"Cut path" cuts the underlying path at the points where the two paths intersects. Try it with border only figures instead of solid colors.

I am so much of a novice at Inkscape, I hesitate to ask a question. Could you tell me what type of computer you are using, what it's resources are and so on. I am using a Windows 10 computer with an I3 processor and 12 gig of memory. It takes my computer so long to do the different things in Inkscape and will actually stop the machine sometimes and I have to close the program. I'm not sure if it's me, my computer or the software. Thanks for taking the time to create your tutorial videos. I hope to, at some point in time, be able to understand what it's all about. I know, at 75 I'm pushing the envelope a bit.
You're not alone, it's as if it was driven by chance. My DELL Precision M4800 runs it without any trouble, but the very same model at work wouldn't handle it... Only difference is that I don't have an antivirus software (which can slow the computer down) other than the built-in Windows Defender.
Can you point me in a direction for what you consider the best set of tutorials for learning Inkscape. I have watched so many videos that my eyes are crossed. The biggest problem I have is that the person doing the videos either talks too fast for my old ears or they are not in full command of the English language and their accent is hard for me to understand. I can't seem to work with scanned scroll saw patterns. I import them but from that point I can't seem to make anything work the way it does in the instructional videos.I don't know if I'm saving them in the wrong format or what. I have tried both .pdf and .jpg but when trying to use the "trace bitmap" that's when my computer just spits at me. I seem to end up with a path that has so many nodes, it is impossible to work with. What am I doing wrong?
Oh, well, I'm not a frequent user of Inkscape to be honest, but it's definitely something I'd like to be good at later in the future.
So far I've bookmarked a few channels here ou RUclips, two of them I know have a website with tutorials and they all speak with what sounds to me a good English:

Now as for your problem with trace bitmap, I think I might have an idea of what's wrong. Maybe the images are too big, or most likely they have so many colors that Inkscape is unable to tell outlines out of it the way you'd expect.
I remember long ago I attempted to vectorize a picture of me once :D you know because of the potential of resizing it indefinitely... I don't remember having succeeded at that. To do things like that I think the first step is to reduce the colors in the picture or adjust the program so that it considers two or more similar colors as one; creating less shapes.

From the help menu:
Path → Reverse (Shift+R) (keyboard shortcut only works with Node Tool): Reverse path: Reversing the direction of a path will affect things like the order in which nodes are selected by Tab and in the direction of Markers (e.g., arrows). New in v0.48: It is possible to display “harpoons” indicating path direction by selecting Show path direction on outlines in the Inkscape Preferences dialog. The outline must be visible (toggle on either by selecting Always show outline in the dialog or clicking the icon in the Tool Controls).

"Cut Path only cuts the bottom object's stroke and removes any fill (this is convenient for cutting fill-less strokes into pieces)". at least that is what the inkscape site says.
