Never knew this happened. Two legends at the top of their game, being extremely comfortable with each other. Thank you for posting.
This could have been the only guest that night. The stories they could tell about their business! Can you imagine making it two hours and adding Dick Cavitt, and Mike Douglas a table and four chairs!!
Today it would have been a podcast
Two absolute legends. I could listen to them all day.
Johnny & Merv: Two talk show legends who nobody will top.
Merv griffin was a genius. He started wheel of fortune and jeopardy
He made a fortune in real estate
@vap0rland I believe he and Trump did a deal in Atlanta and griffin came out on top
And remember Johnny's younger brother Dick Carson was the director of both Merv's late night show and Wheel Of Fortune.
@@vap0rland I did not know that
And my personal favorite, the now defunct "Merv Griffin's Crosswords".
Johnny and Merv were both born in 1925, merv passed in 2007 Johnny in 2005. Legends in a time and era.
Wonderful to watch them kidd each other like that..
His legacy lives on with Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune
And remember Johnny's younger brother Dick Carson was the director of both Merv's late night show and Wheel Of Fortune. And i find it ironic that this was uploaded at the end of Ryan Secreast's first week as the new host of Wheel Of Fortune.
Back when TV was still worth watching. Rest in peace, fellas.
MERV was a PIONEER in many fields of endeavor... and, ALWAYS GREAT.
Yes, he was incredible! He’s responsible for wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. And I think he even did the jeopardy theme song. As well as being a big band singer. And of course a host of other things.
And remember Johnny's younger brother Dick Carson was the director of both Merv's late night show and Wheel Of Fortune. And i find it ironic that this was uploaded at the end of Ryan Secreast's first week as the new host of Wheel Of Fortune.
@@rhyancoleman6462 Good catch!
I’m in awe watching these two powerhouse talk show hosts encouraging and affirming each other. Fantastic TV the way it was. And the way it should be! Thank you kindly for posting this video!
I can not believe he sang the coconut song unbelievable. This man did it all

Ya. My parents had the 78 and I remember them playing it with us kids singing along.
Rick Moranis is the one who first began impersonating Merv with an Ooooooooo.
Must respectfully disagree, because Johnny was spoofing Merv's "Ooooh!" on The Tonight Show during the 1970's, as well. More likely, he was imitating Johnny's imitation. The same way some members of my family loved to imitate _Frank Gorshin's imitation_ of Boris Karloff.
Merv Griffin seemed to be genuinely a good human.
Thank you for posting this! What a great appearance by Merv. Nice to see the rapport between two legends.
If you never saw them you would not know how special this was. These were 2 megastars of TV just chatting. So much fun.
This is such an awesome slice of TV history. Two titans just talking intelligently. We don't see a lot of this in this day and age.
I remember him back in Mid 70s & 80s my childhood & teens my parents used to watch his show every week, i watch with them off & on , ahhhh good ole days RIP
Two giants of the entertainment industry! Great chemistry together.
I watched a bio on merv. He was a very good person. Joyful and kind.
I had waited on Carson at the restaurant Morton’s in LA and I also trained Merv Griffin ..both absolutely great men, nice friendly and very approachable and accessible. What a blessing.
This was not a "friendly" exchange, or any kind of "mutual affirmation". This was a civilized sword fight.
From what I understand, Merv would’ve enjoyed a sword fight
I remember Johnny came on Merv's afternoon show some time in the early '70's, and was joined by younger brother Dick Carson, director of the Griffin show.
Of all the talk show hosts (Dick Cavett, Dave Letterman, Merv Griffin, Jack Paar, Steve Allen, Mike Douglas) up until 1985, I thought Merv was the friendliest, the most ingratiating and extroverted.
Two of the all time greats!
Two giants of the industry just having a good time together. Old time TV was always a lot of fun.
TWO OF THE GREATS !
Had never seen this.
One of his best guests. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@ 6:59.... Merv Griffin's ability to hold his own with Jack Benny while waiting for Jack to answer his question is quite a feat. Carson would have had a giggle fit after five seconds if he'd asked that same question to Jack...
Jack was not afraid of silence.
Nobody will ever top these guys!
Mervin Griffith was a fantastic host, God be with him❤
Two of the great talk show hosts. What is it they had that you could just sit and listen to regardless of who they interviewed?
Griffin had a great show, with a knack for having unusual combinations of guests.
And remember Johnny's younger brother Dick Carson was the director of both Merv's late night show and Wheel Of Fortune. And i find it ironic that this was uploaded at the end of Ryan Secreast's first week as the new host of Wheel Of Fortune.
Merv's show would have been coming to end at that time because several stations that dropped it would soon be part of the then-new Fox network, which would be showing a new late night show with Joan Rivers. Anyone who knows the history behind that knows how Johnny felt about the whole thing.
Merv perhaps was the most successful businessman ever in television. In addition to developing the two most popular TV game shows ever, he wrote the Jeopardy theme. His son receives a royalty every time the theme is played, which has netted him tens of millions of dollars.
I bet Merv had more money than Johnny.
Small B&W TV with hanger for antenna and pliers to change station. Mom cooking dinner, we are doing our homework on kitchen table (after wiping down the table and then putting down newspaper so our homework would stay clean), watching Merv Griffin, Arthur Treacher, with their couch full of guests…Mamie Van Doren, Julie Budd, Gabor sisters, etc. So grateful my mom did not watch soaps, she watched the talk shows and so did we…Who knew those days would never be seen again. And have Merv to thank for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
His empire included some radio stations. 📻💰😎
What a treat to see Jack Benny again.
Whoever booked this was brilliant.
Merv aired I think around 4pm weekdays in cleveland...my mom and I would always watch together
My mom and I would watch his show every say when I came home from school and her from work. It was our time. Great show and live Arthur Treacher.
It's kind of strange that they didn't talk about Dick Carson, Johnny's younger brother who was Merv's long-time director.
And Wheel Of Fortune
@@rhyancoleman6462 Wheel of Fortune is not something that they have in common. Dick Carson is. Johnny's brother directed his rival's show for many years.
Merv Griffin;s grave stone reads, "I will not be right back".
Look how nice and respectful guest looked.
Saw the Merv Griffin Show in person in June of 1969 in the Little Theatre in Times Square next to Sardi's and met him after the show. He seemed very kind and friendly.......memories. Atrhur Treacher was his side man and Mort Lindsay was the music director.
Merv is great too
Merv was a hoot!
Merv Griffin was always so easy-going and friendly. I read somewhere that he did not have any stage fright at all. He was eager to get out on stage every night. Whereas Johnny Carson might have been a little more uptight. But they’re great together. ❤❤❤
I loved watching both of them and wrote for both of their autographs. I never knew until now that they had done this interview. I know Johnny used to joke about Merv's theme shows these two were the best talk show hosts.
I was at two tapings of Merv's show at the TAV celebrity theater on Vine St in Hollywood in the 80s, first time sat way back in the last row, second time sat in the second row ! ! ! !
Thank you for sharing this great video. I grew up watching them both. More so, Merv Griffin because his show was in the afternoon.
This channel needs to seriously keep going with these legendary interviews
Two class acts
I'm heading to Laughlin in three weeks. Coincidence? But Benny's stare - I choked laughing so hard.
I don’t like putting up multiple comments, but…
I was watching a Carson episode today from 1986 or 1987. He read a questionnaire from a magazine and I thought this was fitting considering today’s world. Only 8% of people were concerned about a potential husband or wife’s political views. Those were nice days!
Jesus. This was fantastic.
Just so classy to watch.
Two of the best
I think Merv was worth close to a billion dollars?
Merv was a host while NBC waited for Carsons contract to expire
Love it!
Two giants for sure !!!!
Johnny Carson’s younger brother Dick was the Director of the Merv Griffin show.
And Wheel Of Fortune
When Pat sajak left wheel of Fortune, that last night I thought he would have thanked Merv Griffin.
That says alot, what Merv did for Pats life, family and legacy. He would of had a way different path in life.
I was in Merv's studio audience at the Little Theatre in NYC when he had his long-time sidekick Arthur Treacher. I also was in Johnny's studio audience (twice) at 30 Rock in NYC.
So much class that is totally missing from the current late night hosts.
All three of them are legends
I remember watching this when it first aired.
It's not mentioned but Johnny and Merv had more in common. Johnny's younger brother, Dick Carson, was a director on the Merv Griffin Show.
They were giants! There will never be their like again!
Haha Carson knew FULL well Eva Gabor was a beard.
He *must* have!
That ‘ooh’ and ‘ah’ they were referring to was the spoof of Merv done on SCTV by Rick Moranis
Tonight Merv has one of his themed shows with the nuns of Santa Domingo😂
When Merv goes into the Cockney lines, it reminds of Keith Moon in "Bell Boy"
I watched both shows & Dick Cavett. Back when TV was worth watching. Cavett. interviewed Jimi Hendrix, VietNam infantry & quiet humble man. As to his death his brother said he became a product & wanted to be left alone. The industry is full of blood suckers.
I can't help but think of that one Mama's family episode that centered around "Merv Griffin's chicken wings." That was where I first heard of him.
Johnny’s brother Dick Carson worked for Merv Griffin for decades.
Wonderful.
US EVERYTHING FIFTY😂😂😂😂
Surprised Johnny didn't mention the biggest thing they had in common, after Johnny was signed to take over the Tonight Show, NBC had to use guest host to fill the show, until Johnny's pervious contract ran out so he could go on air. Merv was one of the guest host and was such a ratings hit, that NBC started to get cold feet about Johnny! Of course the rest is history. Maybe it's still a sore spot between them.
I remember when Merv appeared on Letterman years later, Merv reached out to give him a hug and Dave refused.
Dave didn't like to be hugged, back problems I think I read somewhere...
Johnny asking Merv about his girlfriend, lol mean.
Agreed.
Yup, that was disappointing.
I remember Dick Cavett had peter faulk. john cassavittes, and ben gazarra. Legends/
I remember seeing thìs live. Don't remember it being so funny though. Guess it shows how timeless these guys are
Loved Mike Douglas and Phil Donahue too
Damn. I remember when this aired 😩
...you get the feeling they're still talking to each other.
Mom used to joke about how many times she'd burn the peas while making dinner because she kept watching Merv's show.
They look like brothers
I never watched talk shows including the Tonight Show except on very rare occasions but lately I have watched reruns of the tonight show and they have been very interesting and good. I did watch a few David Letterman shows in the past but didn't like them and I have watched some reruns of Conan and they were pretty good.
I’m surprised that they both had recently discovered Laughlin, NV. It’s been a micro-Vegas for many years
I had 5 minutes and I stayed for 15 minutes.
My husband's grandfather said he was a not nice person. He worked at NBC as a night watchman or something.
Johnny or Merv?
His outmaneuvering Donald Trump in the late 1980’s to do with their business enterprises fascinated me at the time.
I didn’t know Merv had a facile sense of financial ventures..at that point I had no awareness Trump was full of hot air with his businesses ..Trump landing in bankruptcy and proclaiming it a great way to do things…I began to wonder if maybe he was not much of a businessman. Sort of funny in retrospect..my young adult years seeing public figures in a different light..I admired Griffin having only known of him when I was a kid ..my mother liked his talk show. 🍃✨
September 5, 1986 was the day Merv Griffin ended his talk show. (We won't be back).
Ryan Seacrest owes his start to Merv. Was pallbearer at his funeral
In this day and age no one still compares to them
Oooh this is a looong interview.
Interesting the never discussed Merv hosted the Tonight Show for several weeks before Johnny started.
