When I studied Art History in college, I learned that there are four fundamental characteristics of Japanese Art: asymmetry, irregularity, love for that which is handmade, and... an ever present melancholy.
The cloudy road is like one we wish to walk together, but feel we cannot. We cannot see one another on the same path because of the clouds which block our view. One could only hope that the clouds are temporary.
I thought this song was sad at first, along with Mast in the mist, but a lot of the mood I hear is simply me attenuating certain parts according to the mood I'm already in. Much like married life from UP is a very upbeat song by itself and yet can sound so melancholy in the movie.
I agree, at least a little. It's a feeling I can't really place, it's not depressing, but it's not soothing either. The feeling reminds me of something, "For after all what is man in nature? A nothing in relation to infinity, all in relation to nothing, a central point between nothing and all and infinitely far from understanding either. "
All of her songs are so... depressing or at least not happy... And why do you keep adding these scenic paintings? They're vast... and when I look at them.. how do I feel?! Feeling sad, and looking into the expanse... nothing really there. I can only look further in, but I won't find what I'm searching for. I don't feel satisfied.. I feel... more depressed. But I'll favorite this video, because of that effect. :o

There is pleasure in being sad, depressive and unhappy. It's a known fact by now. Dostoevkiy, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard and more wrote about it. Even psychology now understands that. There is nothing bad in being sad. Actually the ultimate truth is that only absolute idiots are happy or glad about everything.
@MindfulPerson Not all her songs are depressing. Listen to Cream, Inner Universe, Rise, or most of her collaborations with other artists. I do agree, this video is really sad, but Yoko Kanno doesn't just make sad music.
But her best music is sad music :) haha at least I like the sad stuff the most it just puts me at peace... lets me forget about how awful this world is
Dear Yoko, your music gives comfort to my soul, thank you

Yoko's music is enough to take you to Heaven and back down to Earth .
Ah, truly music for those with a Dreamer's spirit.
It's gorgeus! Excellent idea mix up painting and Kanno's music. Pure art!
i don't think yoko's music are necessarily sad...more like evocative or contemplative. it soothes my soul :)
Please, take me to this beautiful word which your music evokes! My soul is soaring to get there, what beautiful music and paintings!
This piece is just so beautiful
Thank you for adding Gifford's beautiful paintings! It brings a sense of contemplation and inner peace.

Es una bella obra de arte. Es tan conmovedor y sublime que hace que mi corazón revose de emoción y mi pensamientos se calmen.
En mi opinión, todas las obras de Kanno son geniales. Te recomiendo "The Tower of Babel", "In no Piano" y "The Flood", todos de ella. Saludos!
This makes me want to paint...and I haven't painted anything for a lonnnngggg timme
The mix between minor and major is what gives it this dual between sadness and happiness. It's simple but makes you feel something.

How gorgeous and sweeping
vraiment magnifique
I think its sad because its so peaceful, and serene. Its like a world we will never really get to see or experience, and that makes me sad.
You're just not looking in the right places :)
美しい音楽‘、彼女の心がいい雰囲気だらけだ。
those are some amazing painting
Jeez... I think I'm going to cry.
I love it
옛날 생각나게 하는 아주 좋은 갓브금이다.

Reminded me a little bit of Evanescence's "My Immortal" at the beginning :)
The same movement of chords and similiar melody :)
at times it reminds me of the theme song from Jacob's Ladder. beautiful piece all around but I'd expect nothing less from Yoko Kanno
scenes where nothing is there is the whole point... the best parts of this earth are the ones with the least humans

Or an INTP... I gues they're the same thing huh ^^
no hablo nintendo
This song kinda sounds like the ending theme for Mass Effect 3...I'm not gonna cry, I'm not gonna cry...
