    The controversy about the delicate arch wasnt just that he would inspire people to follow and probably damage it, it was that he marketed it as if he only climbed it once as this spiritual free solo , in sync with nature...etc and thats why it was legitimized and then it came out he had a whole team on top with ropes and camera had climbed it several times before. It wouldnt have been a problem with annother route but by that he then really had sabotaged it for any other climber to ever ascent and it felt dishonest to a lot of people. Thats why other climbers felt like his whole spiritual gig was phony and just a way to make money (it wasnt but here the critics had a point) .

    "Primarily" a drummer / percussionist / trail runner / cyclist - I must say that souls like Dean Potter and Dan Osman are more inspirational / influential (for / to me personally) than pulling from heroes of / in "my" specific disciplines. I find it comical (and sad) that no matter how great a master, you will always find uninspired curmudgeons constantly criticizing. Really cements the quotes "people judge from own level of perception" or "one is only capable of meeting others deeply as they have met themselves"

    liked the video quick question are you set on calling this series Conquistadors? Its just a weird name that, as an indigenous person, gives me bad feelings and in my opinion doesn't really match the rock climbing culture, unless this series is only about controversial figures and heels in rock climbing history. anyways glad ur releasing more vids

      Hey, thanks so much for the comment. Someone already mentioned this and I responded to them - I (very stupidly) had no idea what the connotation of the word was. I was basing the series name off of the old book title 'Conquistadors of the Useless' and I thought it was just a different way of saying 'conquerors'. You're right, though - totally innapprorpriate name, I've officially just changed it to the 'Legends' series. Thanks again for pointing this out to me.

    Good video! One thing that really influenced top climbers for better or for worse was the digital camera in the 1990's. It seemed to change one's whole persona during an ascent because it just was not part of the ascent back then. Ego came into play. Cameras were bulky, film only and best left behind when climbing hard., very little was documented, a few butt shots were boring and around Potters time the staging of a camera person was only for the elite. It was confusing as hell and took away from the experience for us. Just hearing a camera click takes one out of the present moment of focused ascent. - Now a days its common digital cameras are at birth and kids don't know any difference. But anyone over the age of 9 in the 90's the new digital camera was a distraction to contend with. Potter made mistakes for sure but I respected him 95% of the time. 🙏

      @@ascentionism Yes, I was forgetting the title of that series. Very excited to learn more about Wolfgang Gullich! If I may guess at the others you have planned ... Sharma, Ondra, maybe Hukkataival? (The last is my soft spot, but he has a decent chance at the title, I feel)

    • @ascentionism
      @ascentionism  3 года назад +1

      @@BrianPaick So I have seven planned! Each of them with their own 'frame' as the GOAT:
      -Lynn Hill
      -Wolfgang
      -Ondra
      -Tommy
      -Warren Harding
      -Josune Beirut
      -Fred Beckey
      I spent AGES debating whether or not to include Sharma on the list. In the end I decided not to, and I probably will do an entire video about why I made that decision sometime. I do have a video coming out in a few weeks (in collab with Climbers Crag) talking about him, though!
      Nalle is an interesting choice! He's got some CRAZY finger strength and I loved him taking a crack at the Dawn Wall. Off the top of my head I don't think he'd have the resume to be an overall GOAT, but I'd love to hear your argument in favour of it!

    • @BrianPaick
      @BrianPaick 3 года назад +2

      @@ascentionism A solid list, by any standard. I look forward to the not-Sharma video, and Nalle for me is the Sharma of bouldering: has been climbing forever, establishing amazing lines that still beat down most climbers (think Livin' Large, which was established in 2009 and has still seen only two repeats). He's climbed the hardest slab in the world, Banshousha (downgrading it by two V-pts along the way); knocked out Gioia without breathing once; and sent The Understanding, Dreamtime, La Force Tranquille, and Delire Onirique in what look like really shitty shoes.
      And, of course, there's Burden of Dreams, which in four years has seen nothing close to an ascent -- Vadim Timonov, Russian steamroller who got Off the Wagon second go, could barely pull off the ground; Daniel Woods was happy to body weight some of the positions, etc. etc. Its move-by-move difficulty is unparalleled, and I would be shocked to see another ascent in the next five years. As an overall climber, he probably shouldn't make the list (in comparison, Lynn Hill certainly excelled diversely enough to have a shot at the title), but I think, when it comes to bouldering, Nalle has more than a fair claim to the title.
      My only beef with your list would be Warren Harding -- but I look forward to hearing your argument, as I'm sure your research will be thorough and cogent.

    • @ascentionism
      @ascentionism  3 года назад +1

      @@BrianPaick Yeah, I already know I'm going to get some heat for Harding. Maybe it's just because Valley Uprising is my favourite movie but I do think there's a case to be made there (with the important caveat that I don't know as much about Joe Brown as I should, and he may have a spot on the list)
      That's a pretty solid case!! In your opinion, would Nalle beat out Daniel Woods for top boulderer of this generation?
      I totally agree about Burden of Dreams -- having a V17 that's essentially only 4 moves is absolutely insanity to me, and the fact that he spent so long projecting it is equally as crazy. I didn't know as much about his other ascents, and how difficult they've been for other climbers. Thanks for sharing!

    I'm a little confused why you chose to call this series conquistadors? Are you saying these old dirt bag climbers are like the conquistadors because that doesn't seem to be a appropriate or flattering comparison. To me the conquistadors have one and only one reputation and that is the brutal genocide of native peoples in central and south america, so I'm pretty confused why you would choose them as a representative symbol of these kinds of climbers.
    Big fan of your content in general but choosing conquistadors as a theme for your series feels wrong to me, similar to columbus these are not people to be respected or honored, they committed horrible acts around the world and not much else. Not at all figures that relate to climbing or even represent any ideals we see in climbers. The conquistadors were responsible for some of the most brutal and bloody parts of south american history, its tone deaf at best to use them as "heroic" figures to compare the old climbers we love and respect to.

    • @ascentionism
      @ascentionism  3 года назад +7

      Hey, thanks so much for your comment. The name conquistadors came from the old Lionel Terray book, 'Conquistadors of the Useless'. That phrase was quoted by a lot of old-time climbing greats, like Jim Bridwell and Yvonne Chouinard, who felt it represented a lot of what they did -- struggling for days up a cliff face when you could just walk around the other side and hike to the top.
      I never actually knew that the term was used in relation to anything else - you're right, that's completely tone deaf of me. I'm going to go and do some more research, but given this comment, I think it's way more appropriate if I rename the series something like 'Legends' and just leave it at that.
      Again, thanks so much for bringing this to my attention, and I'm really sorry that I didn't catch this before posting

      @@ascentionism Thanks so much for reconsidering the name, I was totally unaware it had any climbing history so that's on me to go some reading too.
