Lynn Thompson is one of the few knife designers that is actually a martial artist and a real hunter. But what I really like about Lynn he said his best designs come from training sessions. I carry the vaquero xl myself. Smokey mountain my favorite store.
On top of what you mentioned, Lynn was a disgruntled and frustrated blade consumer that was fed up with the makers he was surrounded by in his younger days - crap quality in materials, poor fit and finish and disappointing performance at unreasonable prices. That's why Lynn founded the Cold Steel brand to change that.

Take note of the folders that he carries: Only Tri-ad folders. He's rich and can afford expensive customs, Medfords, Spartans, Striders, Reeves, Heretics, Rocksteads, OTFs, etc to carry - but he doesn't. He's done and seen enough folder locking mechanisms reliability tests, to know which type he's going to trust his life to. He also knows that one doesn't need a super exotic expensive high edge retention steel to have a reliable blade for self defense. Lynn is hyper pragmatic and practical.
