    Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! I had just started pulling the rears apart and got to the pad carrier and wtf? Who had their head up their ass when they came up with hiding the lower bolt behind the arm?!?!
    It stuns me that the designers are never NEVER planning on working on their own vehicles!

    Excellent video. All I would add is that if you clean off the caliper piston boot and lube it with synthetic grease you you will extend its life almost indefinitely. Short, easy pedal applications after you are done can avoid flipping over the square piston sealing ring.

    So last September found the left outboard pad blew up, frozen in slides. go to Automate get brake pads with hardware kit. cleaned slide pins/grease slide pins, test caliper and put back together. 6 months later I found it had yet another brake issue. pull it apart, expecting a seized caliper, I find the left outboard pad frozen again. This time, new rotors/pads/hardware and more cleaning. what I found after cleaning the bridge was the pads were 3/1000's of an inch to fat on the lower half of the pad below the slide tabs. clean with Red&Tacky they slid with a tiny bit of drag. after grinding I removed the drag, again greased edges with Red&Tacky. After 4 hours of playing with the bridge/mounting hardware I can only recommend you buy a loaded caliper every time you do rear brakes.

    Thank you sir! I'd planned to take my '09 Rondo to the good local shop for the rear brakes once I'd saved the money up for the job. Figures, the rear driver's caliper seized due to rust from the deteriorated pad, so it's parked in my driveway and I only had the $ to get parts; so, the car's up on some borrowed jack stands and I wrote down your instructions. Nitrile gloves on and here goes nothin'! :)

    Thank you for posting this. At least I was prepared. Did the fronts on my dads car in an hour. Couldn't get that bolt out on the rear arm too gain access to the caliper bracket bolt, very frustrating. The nut came off fine but the bolt was seized. I used pb blaster and after an hour I used a bottle torch on it. Got it to twist but it was still seized to the rubber bushing. Had to call it quits and they will have to find a shop unfortunately.

      Thanks, Jim. Other than a small score on the front left rotor, her rear brakes looked okay when I checked them yesterday. Her problem, and it seems to be a problem with many owners of this model based on what I've found on the 'net, is a loud series of thuds or knocks that seem to be hailing from the vicinity of the rear right passenger seat. The strange thing is that they happen only occasionally when she is at a full stop. Of course, it didn't happen when I rode with her as we were listening for them. ANY ideal what that might be? Again, it only happens when she is at a full stop, and she insists that it is loud. I'm baffled.

    Hey Jim. Thanks for a great vid :) Is it safe to asume that the procedure is identical on a Kia Rio 2012?
    Cobberpaste is viable as lubrication for the sliderpins as well as for lubricating the sockets for the pads, right?

    • @jimthecarguy
      @jimthecarguy  8 лет назад +1

      +Per Trinderup Dalgaard Yes the 2012 should be the same but i'm not sure what Cobberpaste is.I would use the brake grease that is specifically made for it.Thank you for your input and for watching.

    • @markarnold371
      @markarnold371 5 лет назад

      If you're talking about copper paste lubricant, yes it can be used on the pads, but use a different lube (silicone grease is recommended) that won't damage the rubber boot for the slide pins. Copper lube is petroleum based and can swell the rubber over time. It may only be fractionally, but even a little can introduce dirt.

    I have a 2011 KIA Sportage EX and until I found this video I was having a hard time finding out if there was another bolt somewhere. It just didn't make sense to remove the arm to get to it. Every video for a 2011-16 was different and both bolts were accessible just like the fronts. Made no sense. Thank you!
    I noticed you didn't torque any off the bolts, is it necessary?
    I was hoping to just replace the slide pins since the caliper was working, but the bottom slide pin will not come out, it will spin but will not come out. I have tried putting a locking wrench on it and pushing but that hasn't worked. I spayed brake cleaner into the shaft to remove any dried grease, and then penetrating oil which didn't work either. There was a lot of brown foam coming out of the shaft from the spray which made me think it was working but nope. Any suggestions on removing a stuck slide pin.
    Thank you for your assistance.

    Vím, že starému kotouči to nevadí, ale při těch rázech trpí zadní ložisko kola. A konkrétně tyto auta jsou na zadní ložiska náchylná. Příště prosím použít stahovák.

      Ale s tím čištěním máš pravdu. Když jsem viděl jak na neočištěný náboj plácne nový kotouč. No budiž, aspoň se na něj podíval světlem, ale to vedení destiček hned zaplácat mazivem a šup na auto. No nevím, nevím. Mimochodem, právě jsem odeslal objednávku na zadní kotouče a desky, takže mě to čeká.

    I replaced a warped rear rotor and pads on a 2014 Kia Optima. Thanks for heads up about rear caliper bolt hidden inside control arm bracket. On my Optima, the rear control arm bolt hits the shock and I needed to remove the shock bolt and move the shock to remove control arm bolt, then move control arm to access caliper bolt. Crazy design. That was the easy part. How do you reassemble control arm quickly. You don't really show that on the video. It was almost impossible to align so that bolt goes all the way through. What is the trick to get this back together quickly, it took me forever? Not easy doing it on jack stands either. I can't find anything on RUclips about it.

      2013 Hyundai Sonata has the same stupid design. Hyundai service manual says that you have to support the lower control arm with a jack to put the upper arm in no-load condition.

      Thanks for the reply. That helped immensely when I did the other side this morning. Hyundai manual does not say anything about unfastening shock lower bolt as well, but on my Kia, that has to come off too to get the control arm bolt out. Only adds about 15 - 20 minutes to a normal brake job. Still a bad design.

      The link in my previous reply is the upper arm procedure. Here's the link to the rear brake procedure:
      www.hsguide.net/rear_disc_brake_repair_procedures-391.html
      It does say that you have to remove the shock absorber before removing the upper arm. Crazy design.
      I replaced the front brakes myself but chickened out on the rear ones after reading the manuals. Took the car to a licensed mechanic to do the rear side. Curiously, he messed up something when he did the job. The car started making loud grinding noises when going over the speed bumps. I took it back and guess what... he removed and reattached the upper arm to fix the noise. Not sure what exactly he did wrong the first time. He didn't want to talk about it.

      Once you know and follow the procedure you provided, it is not too bad.
      It took me about 40 minutes to do the one side.

      I wish I had read your comment and others first. In the video, it didn't take Jim much to put the arm back, but in reality, after ithe arm was relocated, it took me 30 mins to put it back. It didn't align well. I had to use hammer to knock it down really hard. The edge was a little damaged. Then again the blog didn't go through the hole, I had to use hammer again. Hopefully these didn't harm the integrity of the bolts. I would not do this rear brake by myself again in the future. Too much time. Btw,I did come up with an idea: after removing the bolt, knock down the arm gently, as long as there's enough room for the wrench to hold the caliper bolt, but let the edge of the arm stay in place. The 14 mm wrench should be able to get the bolt from the top. With that said, I still thank Jim for these videos. They helped me .

    you did not adjust the parking brake shoes before putting back the rubber cap on the new rotor. Or perhaps you do not have to do this.

      Pretty much, only difference I see is the control arm isnt in the way on the forte. It's pretty straight forward and be careful not to over tighten the mounting screws for the caliper, they're cheap on the forte

      I just did this same job on my 2009 Rondo and while I could loosen the bolt with the arm in place, I couldn't get it backed out completely (the wrench would get trapped). _Much_ easier to just pull the arm (despite the fact that it took some heat to get it to free up)

    • @jeffjeffrey4956
      @jeffjeffrey4956 7 лет назад

      I used a skinny Snap On. I probably pulled that bolt last and pulled the caliper toward me as it was loosening. I don't even remember now...that part was scary as F using a scissor jack on hot TX asphalt. Good thing I had help from my son's friend's dad who is a retired mech from Nam. Nothing like Asian mechanics! Those guys are really creative and think outside of the box when my dumb ass hits a wall LOL!

      +Shane Powell Great video. I'm going to do the back brakes on my daughter in laws 2013 Sorento as soon as I'm done here and will post back. The only thing I didn't get was near the end when the camera was lifted and pointed toward the pins. I didn't get the part about the flat spot on the pins. I couldn't see in the video what you were referring to. I will see in bit though and post back on how it went. Once again excellent video.

    you should never collapse a caliper without opening the bleeder, you can ruin the master cylinder

      no I learned from my father , I own an auto repair business. I flush brake fluid on every single automobile when I do a brake service, when you collapse a caliper without bleeding you force the contaminated fluid back into the master cylinder

    at 14:32 you never ever tighten down a spindle support arm with a pressed in rubber bushing in it, it must be on ground under a car off jack stands then must torque it down ... i worked in a alignment shop 17 years they would fire you if they caught you doing this .... now when you set car down on ground it will twist that rubber bushing so bad it will start to rip it apart just ask any shop no joke,,, believe me... shocking video...

    shocking video... you forgot to clean the rotor with a brakeklean. and clean the surface where the new rotor mates ??? and while you have off the rotor do a service on the parking shoes like grease the backing plate area where the shoes slides on the backing plate so the parking brake will not have restricted movement man... and you should took a measurement of the parking brake shoes to adjust it close to the rotorhat inner dimeter for a close fit, so you will not have waste time trying to get parking brake shoe close to the hat... you should delete this video...

    2. for the rubber silicon paste
