My Mom’s brother served on U-Boats from 1940-1942 . He was lost on his 4th war patrol . She said he was the most wonderful , funny guy you could ever imagine , but put country first , himself second . He was NOT a Nazi , few common soldiers were . War is such an evil waste . When will we learn ?
All German Soldiers swore an oath to Hitler. So all German Soldiers where Nazi Minions, except those who didn't served voluntary. Especially the early volunteers where mainly Enthusiastic about the war.

She said she was ignorant of the truth because the media , radio , newsreels of the day were Nazi propaganda . She believed Poland , and then France and Great Britain were the aggressors .As for the youth , many were 18 and 19 years old and caught up in a wave of ‘duty for country ‘ . Vast majority were not Nazis , just ordinary soldiers ( and very good ones at that ) . My father was sunk by U-160 (Cpt Lassen). As the ship’s captain at 29, he sailed 2600 miles from the south Atlantic to Rio. Took 42 days. People as a whole do nod appreciate the maritime contribution to WW-II. Both my father & Cpt Lassen were sailors that appreciated each other’s dedication… pilots in that war had a similar self respect. It’s the government that need fixing, not the warriors.
My Grandpa Captain Robin Gambier can be seen at 1:28 and was present at the signing. My father has an ariel view of the entire U-Boat fleet. Years later, in 1988, whilst quite drunk at a Bavarian strong bier festival I met by chance, a very cute Bavarian lady, we married, had 2 kids and have been together ever since.
After the war a lot of German girls came to England as nurses. My father got friendly with one, he always said to me you might have had a German mother.
I felt that was so good when the officers saluted them. Different breed of man back then. My grandfather served in both world wars. My mom was stationed in the WAVES in London. She was a PRN at the time and did a stint in Germany for 3 mos. My grandfather broke his leg. The English drs., fixed it and he was on his way. He was captured and the Germans offered to fix his leg and they did to perfection. Never a bad word was said against the Germans, ever, in our home.

With the ships you read "lost at Battle of.." or "scrapped.." or "Indian Navy INS.." etc but with the subs there are lots of "lost, cause unknown" or "failed to return" etc as well as the known losses. Have to respect all submariners.

My Grandfather took the surrender of the Kriegsmarine in Norway May 1945. Was given a Luger , Sword and Binoculars by the German Officer who was a Prussian Military type. The Zeiss Binoculars/ Luger with Nazi insignia There was deep respect between 🇬🇧 🇩🇪 Submarine Services.

Excellent footage, I've only ever seen photos of the surrendered fleet. This is in Maydown in Lough Foyle Northern Ireland. The old jetty's are just about still there next to the oil terminal. After this the U-Boats were taken out to sea and scuttled or used for target practice.
Most likely no sound recorded in the first place...recording equipment was a bulky, separate affair...sound in those days was optically recorded, hence the clipboards you see to coordinate the movements, etc.... onto the film The sounds you hear in ww2 battle footage as shown in theatres, was dubbed in later as it was impractical.

These German sailors are lucky the war ended. Had it continued the majority would have been killed in action. The U boat service lost over 40000 KIA. This was the highest death rate percentage for any combat unit in Germany. Anti-sub technology had gotten so good that these subs were death traps. Some officers were shown smiling and I think I would too having been spared a horrible watery death.

Military service with Allied bomber crews was apparently even more dangerous and deadly than military service with German U-boat crews. RIP for both.

No, hundreds were also sunk by the Germans themselves at the end of the war or, as shown in the video here, handed over to the victorious powers, who later scrapped them. In the meantime there was already a new generation of submarines that made these VII c boats superfluous.

The Germans lost about 70% of of their U-Boat crews. I'd imagine those in the film, while not happy to surrender, were happy to be alive.

I read somewhere that of the 830 u-boats on active service 696 were lost (84%)……..a truly horrendous casualty rate whoever’s side you were on.

3 out of 4 of them did. The highest attrition rate of any service, either side, in the European theater I believe.

Allied aircraft were still attacking and sinking Uboots up to 2 weeks after the formal surrender. The hate was that deep.

There was only 4 uboats landing in Argentina - - maybe Adolf and Eva took the Journey out of Berlin this way but the big quistion must be giving the fact that the uboats came to south- America Argentina in 1946 - and as war ended in 1945 so almost a whole year after ww2 ended , how and where could they get hold of DIESEL and FOOD - cant figurer it out - WHAT
