  • The national tour of Lincoln Center Theater's The King and I will kick off in Rhode Island later this month, with Broadway veterans Jose Llana and Laura Michelle Kelly in the title roles. At a open rehearsal, the duo gave us a taste of the onstage chemistry and vocal prowess they have in store for audiences across America. Listen as Llana and Kelly (along with Manna Nichols as Tuptim and Kavin Panmeechao as Lun Tha) lend their voices to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Singers on RUclips do not sound accurate! I see people complaining about singers who have been recorded on an iphone! For goodness sake--you are hearing an amateur recording. On occasion, a professional broadcast quality video is posted, but that is very rare. BBC Proms is a good example of fairly good recording and posting on RUclips. Rehearsal studios do not use broadcast quality equipment! See anything recorded/posted from Joe's Pub. Those acoustics will make you cringe.

I factor those things in and assume one will sound better in person as a life long theatre fan and professional. However, this seems a bit off. Also this is a professionally shot promo so it's as good as it gets for that moment. I will assume she is better in person and leave it at that. There are many an engaging representations of performances taped on old tape recorders 60 years ago. Sometimes it comes shining through. This recording doesn't grab me.

Laura is SO miscasted! She's lovely but her voice is not right for the part! They should have picked a real soprano. "Hello Young Lovers" is one of the most beautiful songs in musical theatre, and she absolutely ruined it belting it like that. I'll keep listening to Kelli. Other than that, the girl playing Tuptim is stunning and has a wanderful voice.

Idk I think her vocal color and range is suitable enough. And she's definitely a real soprano. I think she was mixing in the end not belting. There's no way those high notes would be reached with just chest-voice. But yeah, it does have a belt-y quality.
In Getting To Know You she sound perfect. She probably still hasn't gotten the hang of the other song. This is just a rehearsal. I don't see how this is miscasting. If anything, it's a bit type-casting but it happens all the time on theatre.

Violetta Sele Laura is an angel and is perfect for the role.

Violetta Sele I saw your review and assumed you wrong about Laura then I saw the proof. She's fine for "Know You" but for "Lovers" of her game. She's a real soprano alright and seems to be in a higher key. Which sounds a bit like squealing. She also seems a wee bit pitchy. I was thinking about seeing this production as it's in my town right now but I'm now having 2nd thoughts

Russell Wright Go see it! It's not everyday that people have a chance to see a Broadway actress + a wonderful cast in a show as beautiful as The King and I. I know that I would KILL to see it. You might just be surprised.

Laura BSwan I appreciate your enthusiasm. I've seen lots of Broadway stars in New York and on tour here in San Francisco. I may go if I can get rush seats. If I go I'll keep you posted!
