I am Spanish, you pronounce Don Quijote perfectly fine. The book is considered the first modern novel and it is the second most translated book in the world after the Bible. I am glad you loved it, I do too. Fun fact, both Cervantes and Shakespeare, which is also considered the first writer of modern theatre/drama, died the same day of the same year.
A Series of Unfortunate Events is such a good one!! I grew up on that series and still love it to this day. I might be older but I never outgrow that. Thank you for your helpful reviews and opinions!!
the BBC adaptation of War and Peace is nice but the Soviet version from the 60s is incomparable. Its very long (12 hours if I remember correctly) but beyond rewarding. Highly recommend!
A big thank you (to you and emmie), because in 2021 I've read War and Peace and it has changed my life! It has become my favourite book of all times with Wuthering Heights! Also, I'm reading russian classics again!! Thank you and Willow is adorable as always!
My Favorite Books Of 2021: Honorable Mentions - Frankenstein, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Grapes of Wrath, The Yellow-wallpaper Favorite Audiobook - Dial A for Aunties. I didn't realise the true power of audiobook until december so there wasn't a lot of competition. This one was just very funny and a delight to listen to Favorite Author - John Steinbeck! Favorite Non-fiction book - Expeditionen (The Expedition) A Swedish book about Andrée's artic balloon expedition which has always interested me, so much original research was done and just solidly entertaining meanwhile. Favorite Middle Grade/ Children’s lit. - Anne of Green Gables Favorite Classic - East of Eden. Just fantastic in every regard (my favourite book I have ever read??) Favorite Sci-fi - Project Hail Mary Favorite Graphic Novel - Mumin: Tove Janssons Collected Comics. Just so funny and adorable, there is some questionable themes though
I’m Russian, and I’m really happy to see that you read Russian literature. It’s so amazing that most of your favourite books of the year(or life) is classic Russian literature. I also love Bulgakov and I would really suggest for you to read “Master and Margarita”. This is like his most famous novel and the best one in my opinion. I read it and re-read it many times. You do amazing work with those little sketches (portraits )you have and I noticed Pushkin right away, and if I’m not mistaking you have Chekhov behind you? I would really love to have some of those sketches for myself, so I hope you shared a link for your Etsy shop where you sell those.
My Favorite Books Of 2021: Honorable Mentions - Die Physiker, Black Sunday, Persuasion, The Master and Margarita, A Christmas Carol Favorite Audiobooks - Pillars of the Earth Favorite Author - Herrmann Hesse Favorite Non-fiction book/writer - Fermat's Enigma by Simon Singh Favorite Contemporary - The Secret History Favorite Classic - Siddhartha. Eine indische Dichtung (my favorite book of the year) Favorite Fantasy - Cresent City. House of Earth and Blood Favorite Sci-fi - Scythe Favorite Historical Fiction - Kingsbridge Trilogy I started reading classics for the first time this year because of you and fell in love with every one of them! Thank you :)
I immediately ordered and subsequently read Live Oak, With Moss when you mentioned it in your previous video. Thank you so so much Carolyn for the recommendation, it added so much love to my day and life; everything about the book was so thoughtfully done, with so much heart, I imagine Whitman watching and smiling at the love he has left behind in all our hearts
Loved the video, Carolyn! Also, your pronunciation of "Don Quixote" is perfect 🙏👌🙌, as well as your pronunciation of the author and characters. As a native Spanish speaker, it's very satisfying to finally hear someone saying it right.
Really enjoyed this presentation, Carolyn. Because you enjoyed Eugene Onegin so much, I wonder if you have ever seen Tchaikovsky's opera. It's superb and you can probably get the DVD from your library. Try to get the Met version featuring Anna Netrebko. Also, War and Peace is truly life changing. It rescued me from a truly dark time in my life in late 1970. About all I did in the latter months of that year was read War and Peace and sleep. To this day, I reread every few years and greatly revere it. Thanks again for your wonderful choices, Carolyn and all the best for 2022.
As a spaniard myself, I've to say: you pronounce "Don Quijote" in the cutest of the ways (and also, you pronounce it correctly). And there are a lot ways to pronounce it here in Spain due to all our dialects!!
What a wonderful ramble! Such enthusiasm; it's contagious. A few random thoughts...I must read Pushkin. When you read out loud I heard immediately the same rhythm from one of my favourite books, The Golden Gate by Vikram Seth. I just know you will enjoy it, as well as his epic, A Suitable Boy. This weekend my 20 year old son decided to clear out his bookcase. One book that I rescued was The Invention of Hugo Cabernet written and illustrated by Brian Selznick. I will definitely read it now.
Omg i have been watching emma for a long time and she is my absolute favorite youtuber ever, ive seen your face on the bookclub thumbnail but have never got around to visiting your channel. Im so mad at myself for that now, you are so cute an precious and i love the way you talk, i wasnt bored one second. Im so excited to binge your entire channel now YAYYYY
Being fully immersed in a long-term project, creating a best list isn't possible. However, for you I will choose one: A re-read from the OT, the Book of Daniel. I am so very glad you enjoyed W&P and DQ. Both of them are old favorites.
you pronounced don quijote perfectly carolyn! so happy you had such a great reading year! and yay to war and peace! and you make me want to read eugene onegin !
willow's snores get me everytime 😂 favorite of the year - the song of achilles favorite audiobooks - everything i never told you favorite re-read - red white and royal blue favorite author - madeline miller favorite contemporary - other words for home favorite middle grade - percy jackson favorite classic - tess of the d'urbervilles favorite fantasy - wheel of time favorite romance - the love hypothesis favorite gothic novel - mysteries of udolpho 😉 favorite graphic novel - hearstopper volume one
OMG! Yes, Ethan Frome! I read it last year for the first time and it blew me away. I read it again last week(praying it would hold up as well as on the first read) and OMG, it did! I gave it 4.5 on my first read, but 5 stars on the 2nd read. How I didn't give it 5 stars the first time is beyond me. It is a perfect read and I rarely say that. I have maybe 4 books(from the thousands I've read) that are perfect reads. EF is one!
D. Quijote, what a great book, what a skilled writer Cervantes was. I am glad you have this novel as your favorite since this book is not frequently mentioned in youtuve. It will certainly find more lovers now! My favorite of 2021 is Frenchman`s Creek by Daphne Du Maurier and I think you could like it also. Have a happy day!
I've read War and Peace in 2021 because of you and it became my favourite book in the whole universe. It's just soooo good. Like I have many other all time favourites of course but this one just stands out. It's genius. I will read this year Don Quixote and hopefully Eugene Onegin. I can't thank you enough for introducing me to these books. I mean, I always knew they existed but would never even think of picking them up on my own. You talk about books with so much love and passion I have to read them :). Good luck to your reading this year, I hope you will introduce us to more amazing books, especially classics. And Happy New Year, thank you for being here 🥰.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who read Beatrix Potter as an adult! I nannied a few years ago and we watched the newish Peter Rabbit movie together, so I checked out the books from the library, but ended up reading some of them by myself 😂 My library had that same box set and I loved those editions so much!
What a great list of books to add to my never ending pile of things to read. War and Peace is definitely on my list for this year. I'm curious what translation you read. I have the Rosemary Edmonds edition. There is such a huge debate over which is the best translation so I'm always curious what people think is the best one. The copy I have had such a horrid cover which was warped and just hard to handle that I actually cut it apart and divided the book into it's four books. I work in a print shop so I had all of the supplies needed to recreate them into actual books with new soft covers. My arthritis loves it. lol It's a pretty old copy and I didn't want to toss it. I love the way it smells, almost a spicy paper scent! I also just added Marvels to my library holds list as well. It looks amazing! Always a pleasure to see you Carolyn. Happy Reading!
My favourite translators for all things classical Russian literature are richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky. Their award winning translations are usually the closest to the original as you can find for the great works of the Russian classics
I’m just a very happy person, because I can watch your videos) My favourites of this year are: War and Peace by Lev Tolstoy Fathers and sons by Ivan Turgenev A Hero of our time by Mikhail Lermontov Fatal Eggs by Mikhail Bulgakov Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen Captain’s daughter by Alexander Pushkin I would highly recommend you to read Fathers and Sons…it’s amazing and very interesting book!!! I enjoyed it) P.s. I have just realised that I forgot about one play “Thunderstorm” by Ostrovskiy I don’t really know how it called in English version, so I hope I was right or quite right)) Happy New Year and always amazing books!!!
Hi! I recently found your channel and I really enjoy your videos! I love classic literature and feel inspired and motivated to read more thanks to you!! Wishing you a happy new year!
Loved all your classical selections for the year especially War and Peace, really looking forward to delving into the short stories category in the new year for the Dickens vs Tolstoy debate. "The death of ivan ilyich" by Tolstoy, though not a short story, is a shorter work of his which is still one of my favorites. It will be great to see that also incorporated onto the debate if possible. 🙂
Winnie the Pooh has also probably been my first favourite story as a child ❤ I'm re-reading and rewatching it now as an adult, it feels so cosy and wholesome, like a warm blanket 🥰
84 Charing Cross Road is on of my favorite books and films. I learned so much from, it titles I had never heard of before. Love it!!! I love Don Quixote, its such a sweet, beautiful and f love Peter O'Toole. How To Steel a Million is an all time fave for me, it is such fun. Everyone in is sensational, I think Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole was a great team in it.
I love the variety of your list, it’s nice to see you talk about lots of genres rather than just a list. For my favourites of the year I would say: Overall - All Quiet on the Western Front (for me the best book written about WW1) Classic - A Tale of Two Cities (the third book/ act is majestic) General fiction - A Gentlemen in Moscow (this book is just so happy!) Non-fiction - In Europe by Geert Mak (it’s not quite history, nor is it quite journalism but it is good at both)
@Tanya it’s by a Dutch journalist. He goes to loads of historically important places from the 20th century and combines his experiences of the place (in 1999 when he travelled and wrote it) with talking to people who were there (for more recent entries) and with historical research about what happened there. He goes to Ypres (for 1916), Munich (for the 1920s), Moscow (for the 1980s) etc., as I’ve been a lot of the places it’s really interesting to read about their recent history.
@Tanya no, I don’t think so unless you are interested in the travel aspect of it too. Would recommend something like “Postwar” by Tony Judt more for a more historical style.
When you talk about your favorite books, well, you convince me haha. I read Eugene Onegin by Pushkin, First Love by Ivan Turgenev and White Nights by Dostoevsky (this last one has become one of my favorite books EVER) and I've liked all of them so I think I can trust you with recommendations 😂 In this 2022 I want to read War and Peace, I hope I love it too 🤞 By the way you pronunciation of "Don Quixote" is really good! It sounds as we pronounce it in spanish. I've thought about reading this book but I'm worried lol, I might try and read it in this year. Thank you for another lovely video!
I once bumped into Peter O'Toole (literally!) I was leaving Hampstead train station on my way to visit the home of poet John Keats...turned a corner and walked slap bang into Peter O'Toole! In our typically British way we both apologised profusely and went on our way. "Ode To A Nightingale" and "Man Of La Mancha" in one memorable afternoon!
Because of War And Peace's scope it comes out on top for me,though Eugene Onegin was a wonderful read.I hope you continue to grow as a creative artist steady and true to your calling!
Highly recommend watching the film version of 84 Charring Cross Rd if you can get your hands on it. Felt that the direction stayed true to the book and of course, beautifully played by the wonderful Anne Bancroft and Sir Anthony Hopkins! really took me back into that time period with all of it's flavors and lovely, classic British and NY Jewish accents.
Thank you for such an amazing year of videos and amazing books! It was simply a blast watching your videos and listening to you (and Willow of course ❤). I can't express the impact you've had on my life in general and my reading life! As for some of my favourites of the year: audiobooks - anything by Dan Jones, he's a British historian who narrates his own books and has a very good writing style, author - the man himself Leo Tolstoy, non-fiction - Becoming (Michelle Obama), middle-grade/children's lit - The Hobbit. But the most impactful books, clearly War and Peace and Anna Karenina. I hope you'll have great year reading-wise, as well as in everything you do. Much love!
My favorite books of 2021 - and of the life - are: The Red and the Black by Stendhal, The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoievsky, and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Greetings from Brazil.
I also read a fortnight in September on a family vacation this year and loved it! Everyone should read it that way I think. My favorite book I read this year was Matrix by Lauren Groff, but I also loved Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter. Excited to read more books by her now.
Oooh! I stumbled upon your channel, watching this thought ''oh what a lovely girl and she loves classics too! subscribed'' then you said about *emmie*, who I've been following since spring I think and whose channel I adoore but somehow never got to watching those Tolstoy vs. Dickens videos. Ha! Nice to see it's you :) I am profoundly intrigued by basically all of your recommendations???? I love that there are (plenty) books I didn't know about and haven't seen others mention them, added some of them to my bookstore wishlists :D My fave read this year has been Bulgakov's The master and Margarita! Absolutely in love with this free, fun, imaginative insanity
If you like Robert Macfarlane I recommend 'The living mountain' by nan shepherd. It's a poetic love letter to life in the Cairngorms in Scotland. She talks a lot about just existing in nature and the different facets of the mountain. Plus the foreword is my Robert Macfarlane as well!
Carolyn, such a cute personality you have! anyone can fall in love with your intelligence, looks, voice, everything 😍 so many new books for me to explore. Before this day I watched only Russian booktubers but now I found you. thank you!!! By the way, if you like Anna Karenina, maybe you are also familiar with another movie of 2013 with an Italian actress Vittoria Puccini. For me it's the best one. Good luck to you and happy new year ❄️

Happy New Year, Carolyn! Seeing Willow again is so great! Ethan Frome was among my favourites too and my reaction to the ending was very much like yours 😅. I was wondering if you've watched the film adaptation of War and Peace with Audrey Hepburn.

I used to read and loved it . I have been so detached since I stopped reading due to my job since it takes up most of my time , and I have to upskill every week . It gives me anxiety remembering how fun it was and I am not able to do it anymore and what I am missing out on.
Favorites of 2021: Cinderella is Dead, Gates of Rome, Bartimaeus Trilogy, Needful Things, The Poppy War, The Velveteen Daughter, Never Let Me Go, Magician: Master (book 2), Middlemarch, The Odyssey, The Clockmaker's Daughter, Miracle Creek, H is for Hawk, Strange the Dreamer, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dracul, Something Wicked this way Comes, Mrs. March, The Mist, The Great Hunt, NOS4A2, Nyphron Rising.
The movie version of "84 Charing Cross Road" starring Anne Bancroft and an under-stated Anthony Hopkins is warmly recommended and succeeds surprisingly well in transforming such un-cinematic material into a compelling viewing experience that perfectly compliments the book.
I saw 84 Charing Cross Road in the West End of London back in the early 80s. Now I am intrigued to see the film and read the book. Also, Anthony Hopkins; I was blown away by his portrayal of Pierre in the BBC adaptation of War and Peace many years ago.
@@lizrobertson2704 Many thanks for the message! I too have fond memories of the Anthony Hopkins "War & Peace" but if anything I thought the more recent BBC adaptation (2016) was even better although I'm ashamed to say I still haven't read the book. .yet!

Hi Carolyn, I know you like combined art forms. One of the most beautiful for me is Mendelssohn’s Overture for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, even the ass gets a moment. Give it a listen if you have time. Even better listen to it whilst reading the play.
I liked both the books and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. I felt the adaptation was pretty faithful. Hope you can get into it this time! As fate would have it, I was just going to pick up a new book today, so I'll be reading Anna Karenina for the first time!

Carolyn, please read Villette by Charlotte Brontë. i saw in one of your vids you have that book and it's unread by you. i just finished the book and don't know what enough to say about it. it's soo different from Jane Eyre and it will have you expecting so much from the characters but Charlotte will give you something you never would have imagined. she so cleverly weaves the characters and their lives together, it just makes sense that each and every character she has mentioned in the story, each plays their role in their own major ways, and i'm sure you'll just looove the beautiful writing and the solemn book. READ IT!
Thank you so much for your videos! I love classics and am always looking for something new to read. I also love gay male romance books also! On another note, I'm currently reading The Night Watchman for a virtual book club. It's awesome!

For Christmas I received a copy of the revised edition of "The Novel 100: A Ranking Of The Greatest Novels Of All Time" edited by Daniel S. Burt. Any top 100 of anything list is necessarily subjective but I thought you would like to know that...drumroll please..."Don Quixote" is ranked number one followed by "War And Peace" at number two! "Ulysses" (TBR?) by James Joyce limps in at number three and Proust's "In Search Of Lost Time/Remembrance Of Things Past" (another TBR?) misses out on the medals in fourth.
How could i not know of Ally McBeal. Written by David E Kelley and starting Calista Flockhart. I particularly like Peter McNicol's character in the show.
Illuminati shit
A Series of Unfortunate Events is such a good one!! I grew up on that series and still love it to this day. I might be older but I never outgrow that. Thank you for your helpful reviews and opinions!!

The first flashback clips made me so emotional lol I can't believe I've been following you for so long! Love you so much 💚💚
Loved the video, Carolyn!

I nannied a few years ago and we watched the newish Peter Rabbit movie together, so I checked out the books from the library, but ended up reading some of them by myself 😂
My library had that same box set and I loved those editions so much!
You give me so much hope to be able to read non fantasy and still be able to grow a larger booktube channel lol. Loved this so much!
It's a Willow pillow 😂❤ I'm reading heart of a dog right now and it's superb. I love it ❤
Look at that beautiful classics 😍😍
Ethan Frome is one of the few books I reread--I just love it. So glad you enjoyed it, too!
I’m just a very happy person, because I can watch your videos) My favourites of this year are:
War and Peace by Lev Tolstoy
Fathers and sons by Ivan Turgenev
A Hero of our time by Mikhail Lermontov
Fatal Eggs by Mikhail Bulgakov
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Captain’s daughter by Alexander Pushkin
I would highly recommend you to read Fathers and Sons…it’s amazing and very interesting book!!! I enjoyed it)
P.s. I have just realised that I forgot about one play “Thunderstorm” by Ostrovskiy I don’t really know how it called in English version, so I hope I was right or quite right))
Happy New Year and always amazing books!!!
For my favourites of the year I would say:
Overall - All Quiet on the Western Front (for me the best book written about WW1)
Classic - A Tale of Two Cities (the third book/ act is majestic)
General fiction - A Gentlemen in Moscow (this book is just so happy!)
Non-fiction - In Europe by Geert Mak (it’s not quite history, nor is it quite journalism but it is good at both)
@Tanya it’s by a Dutch journalist.
I read Eugene Onegin by Pushkin, First Love by Ivan Turgenev and White Nights by Dostoevsky (this last one has become one of my favorite books EVER) and I've liked all of them so I think I can trust you with recommendations 😂
In this 2022 I want to read War and Peace, I hope I love it too 🤞
By the way you pronunciation of "Don Quixote" is really good!
IMpossible - must have been a dream jk/lol
@@jamesduggan7200 I know it was him 'cos he was riding a 🐫 🐪 🐫!
You are a great artist making this video. I don't know if I like dogs or books better ;-) congratulations!
Ha! Nice to see it's you :)
I am profoundly intrigued by basically all of your recommendations???? I love that there are (plenty) books I didn't know about and haven't seen others mention them, added some of them to my bookstore wishlists :D
My fave read this year has been Bulgakov's The master and Margarita!
The longer the video the better. Such wonderful books. I will have to check out Marvels!!!!
I absolutely loved this!!!!! 🥺❤️❤️❤️

Ethan Frome was among my favourites too and my reaction to the ending was very much like yours 😅. I was wondering if you've watched the film adaptation of War and Peace with Audrey Hepburn.

@Tanya No, but I have been really wanting to pick it up!!! I’ve heard a lot about it and honestly your comment has convinced me to get to it sooner!
Anyone want to read war and peace together ?? It feels so daunting ! Carolyn and Emma are inspiring and encouraging me.. I hear their words !!
Your handwriting is beautiful!
I have just started Anna Karenina.. I have had the very intimidating read on my TBR and Shelf for the last two years, so I felt like it was TIME.

You pronounce Don Quijote perfectly!!!!! I’m from Mexico :) and you are 10000% correct with the pronounciation💜
I used to read and loved it . I have been so detached since I stopped reading due to my job since it takes up most of my time , and I have to upskill every week . It gives me anxiety remembering how fun it was and I am not able to do it anymore and what I am missing out on.

I love you so much and your dog is really cute!!!! Oh my god I wanna hug her and you💖💖💖💖💖
The movie version of "84 Charing Cross Road" starring Anne Bancroft and an under-stated Anthony Hopkins is warmly recommended and succeeds surprisingly well in transforming such un-cinematic material into a compelling viewing experience that perfectly compliments the book.
I too have fond memories of the Anthony Hopkins "War & Peace" but if anything I thought the more recent BBC adaptation (2016) was even better although I'm ashamed to say I still haven't read the book. .yet!

I liked both the books and the Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events. I felt the adaptation was pretty faithful. Hope you can get into it this time! As fate would have it, I was just going to pick up a new book today, so I'll be reading Anna Karenina for the first time!

You should read 'The Overstory' by Robert Powers! I have heard so much about it and its a fiction book about people but I believe through the metaphors of trees and supposedly it is incredible
I've read Richard Powers' Overstory. It was compelling and annoying at the same time, if that makes sense. I do feel that I should reread it.

READ IT!
i approve of your Don Quixote pronunciation :)
My favorite Edith Wharton is House of Mirth...
Thank you so much for your videos! I love classics and am always looking for something new to read. I also love gay male romance books also! On another note, I'm currently reading The Night Watchman for a virtual book club. It's awesome!
My favorite book of 2022 to read will be The Holy Bible. Slava Bogu!
Well, what can I say, I'm from Russia and I feel honoured.🙂
*My Favorite Books of 2021*

Lithuanian /American /YA Lit: Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
loved it loved it!! 💜
I particularly like Peter McNicol's character in the show.
i read war and peace in 2021 too
Eugene Onegin read by Stephen Fry is the best!
I recently read Heart of a dog by Bulgakov and I loved it. 💖💖💖
I recommend reading his other novellas.
Hello, there's an opera un three acts by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for Eugene Onegin. I love the performance of Dmitri Hvorostovsky.
Puzzling to favour Tolstoy over native English writers; is it his work you like or that of his translators?
1. Greek Zorba
2.Le Miserables
yay, a long carolyn video
Summary: Carolyn love almost every books she has read. Hahahahahaha
