- The Battle of Rotterdam (1940) was part of the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940. Far behind the expected front line Dutch marines and infantry had to fight an enemy that came from the sky. It culminated to the infamous bombing of Rotterdam that left the city centre in ruins.

Mr. History Hustle,
read German author Cajus Bekker's
"The Luftwaffe War Diaries"(American translation) for the author's opinion on
the Rotterdam bombing.
Very illuminating, like the Adolf Galland memoirs.
Which but starkly vindicated Air-Marshal Arthur Harris' assessment.
Cajus Bekker in fact published the
1st version of his book in 1952 of the title
"Als Der Himmels Brannt -
When The Heavens Burnt"
under the name of Karl Bartz.
The book was translated in French only,
not even published in the UK.
He later expanded in 1963-64 as
"Angriffshohe 4000 - Attack Altitude 4000"
under the name Cajus Bekker, & serialized with fantastic iconography in the German magazine Kristall (Hamburg), until the American edition in the late 60s.
This video offers a concise and accurate picture of the battle of Rotterdam. Good work!
Great video! Keep it up. Do one on Amsterdam in WW2, I went there myself. It was a great city.
Soon a video I recorded in Amsterdam! Cool you liked this one. Perhaps one day I'll remake it. It was one of my very first videos on location.
@@HistoryHustle can you do one of The Hague cause I live in The Hague
my parents lived through this horror, and told us many stories about it. GOD how they suffered, starved and wept ,
I can understand.
My grandfather said the Heinkels made the sky and earth shake with their engine noise.
He was from Rotterdam.
Also, I talked to two elderly ladies that told me about a lieutenant in the Dutch army that was told by high command to send his men on a suicide mission.
He disobeyed , got shot for insubordination and saved a whole platoon.
Unsung hero, because "narrative".
The real stories of the war, they're mostly lost to time.
And to think Battlefield 5 is disrespecting all of those that sacrificed their lives.
Why do you think so?
@@HistoryHustle It's because in-game you play as British soldiers in the Rotterdam map instead of the Dutch Marines.
@@HistoryHustle cyborg "women" not the group of soldiers really fighting now they gatta be politically correct and its gay
@@ferix2379 there are no cybernetic female soilders in Battlefeild 5
Hey mate good job I appreciate this video as I'll be visiting Rotterdam soon and was looking for some background info
Thank you Francis. Rotterdam is a very modern city now. But if you look good you can find some old stuff. Glad you enjoyed the video. Enjoy the city!
@@HistoryHustle are you from Rotterdam?

@@HistoryHustle Dat weet ik, a practical joke ;-)
it wasnt even meant to be. the germans send a letter threatening with the carpet bombing but it wasnt signed and the dutch didnt think it was legit. before they could solve their communication issues the bombers already floored the city even though the Germans fired red flares as a sign to turn around and not bomb the city. the issue was that the germans arrived from two sides and one of the groups didnt see the flares.
True.
Stefan without a beard. Truly a rare sight! :)
Those were the days,
no katanas, no barbed cricket bats, no lesbian cyborg pirates? This is not the Battle of Rotterdam I know.
What do you mean?
@@BalboaBaggins it was a battlefield 5 joke

Lol. Oh yes they did my friend
BattleField YT they did lmao
It'll be cool if the grand operation for this map gets the 4 days

Not suppose to be its a game. They didn't say they were gonna make a realistic game. Battlefield was never realistic
Ww2 are an insult to the history
You looked like that just about 5 years ago?! 😮
Haha, correct, cause the video is that old. I actually did a remake a few months back.
The original bridge is behind him the bridge is removed but the both bridgeheads are still there.. I wonder why he didn't fim from those?
In the future I want to redo this video and record at the original bridgehead.
@@HistoryHustle Dit is deels juist.
Americans today have no idea it happened or why. Millions of them think the Netherlands and Germany are the same countries.
Really? 😯
Hey I was just wondering on which side of the river was the national insurance building that you were referring to?
On the north west side.
Just saw your new version. It needed the remake 'cause this one lacks beard :-)
Greets, T.
🧔👍
Did the british fight this battle too? Or Battlefield V adapted?
BF 5 is indeed adapted. Only Dutch troops fought here during May 1940. British troops did disembark at nearby coastal place of Hoek van Holland but did not reach Rotterdam, nor took part in any fighting.
Did you like TiK's video?
Sure did!
Dang you aged a lot in 5 years.
Time flies...
Lol im here from battlefield
Many are...
The bombing 😱 terrible
Yes, indeed.
‘‘ Toen bij ons die mariniers op de Maasbrugge die Moffe d'r strot afbete, stonde ze in Amsterdam godverdomme metter klauw omhoog langs de weg te kijke wat een mooie auto's die Duitsers toch hade! ’’ ~ JD
Klinkt als een literair werk...
@@HistoryHustle Enkel cultuurbarbaren zouden dat ontkennen...
Overigens kwamen de Duitsers Amsterdam pas binnen toen de gevechten in Rotterdam voorbij waren en de stad in as lag.
