Also a good idea to set your USB ports to be always on, so that your drive won’t auto shut off/disconnect if you use rest mode (default shuts them off after 3 hours). You can set this in Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. For the drive, Sony actually recommends using the USB-C port on the front first, if your drive has the cable for it. (If not, then yes, use the back ports - the front USB-A port is not super speed).

In light of your video, how do you recommend changing an external drive currently being used with a PS5 (which contains PS4 games), with a larger capacity external drive? How do you get the content from the smaller to the newer larger external drive (without copying to the PS5 internal drive)? I have been told that as long as the game saves are uploaded to the cloud with PS Plus, I can simply connect the new drive, format and redownload/reinstall all the games onto the larger drive. Is this the best way?
Just got the ps5 and just attached a harddrive yesterday and did everything you listed in your video correctly by chance. Glad I saw this video to boost my confidence
I learned these tips from experiencing them myself and had so much trouble. I had to reformat or reindex the external hard drive several times back when I first got my PS5 to the point where I was considering returning the PS5 to the store. The sad part is, even when I disconnected the external hard drive through the system menu first, then unplugged it, it would always result in the same issue either way. On or off, showing connected or not, it caused some weird corruption. Even after the updates that Sony released, I’m afraid if I ever disconnect the hard drive in any way again that I’ll have these issues, but I hope not.
All you have to do is make sure the power to the system is completely cut off. Meaning that the system is not in rest mode. Sure completely down and you can unplug no problem.
I just got my ps5 today and went on RUclips as I wanted to find reviews for games and your video popped up first and I’m like “okay I better watch jusssssst in case

@@huiba1 Just to clarify, I'm talking about the small Type-C front port. The caveat is, you need a Micro-B to Type-C cable to connect a storage drive to that port, which is like $5 on amazon.
I actually use the same Western Digital 4tb that I used for the ps4. Since I saved all my games on the hard drive, it was that much easier to just plug and play on PS5. Thanks for the tips.

Just managed to purchase a PS5 after two years! Never used an external hard drive with my PS4. Can you play games directly from the hard drive? Maybe you could do a video demonstrating how a hard drive is used, please?
I have a Crucial X8, and it wouldn't even format when plugged into the back. It has a C to C plug, with a USB adapter. If I use the adapter, in the back ports, the console won't recognize the SSD. If I ditch the adapter, and use the front USB C port, it works perfectly
Does keep up with the ps5? Any frame drops for ps4 games when playing on there? Does it slow the system down by the slightest? I fiending for space on my ps5 and patiently waiting for the official ps5 ssd cards but i need something now!
@@AmpGaming305 I have the same drive I used on the ps4 I didn’t notice any gram drops. Then again some Sony games have been updated to support 60fps. I noticed loading times are faster even on the hard drive but I’m not a tech guy.
I noticed an option that in the video settings that allows you to select whether HDR turns on if the game supports or not. Makes a huge difference on game that don't support HDR; even backwards compatible ones.
I realize this is two years late, but it’s funny how many people think that looks better. It washes out the image when you do that. It’s artificially brightening the picture, without enhancing the color, like actual HDR content. In other words, you’re shining a brighter light onto existing colors that haven’t been enhanced to pop and compensate for that light shining on them. The only time “HDR Always On” looks ok is with an OLED, or QD-OLED, thanks to the TV’s deeper colors. Otherwise, forcing HDR on non-HDR games makes them look brighter, but overall worse. So many people think brightness = good picture. It doesn’t.
Don't worry dude you'll get one soon(starting to see more and more friends getting sorted recently) and honestly you're not missing much other than faster load times, Demon Souls is good and the pad is amazing other than that I'm still playing mostly PS4 games just on the Ps5 now And yeah you do need a external hard drive cause you only have 625gb storage on the console itself most of my PS4 games were already on a Seagate harddrive and it was as simple as plug and play real smooth process very handy not having to download over 5tb worth of games again
The reason why I put mine in the back before you posted this video is because on another tips and tricks video I saw your hardrive connected to the back port lol
During initial setup of my PS5, I had tried using my external on the front port. Had transferred PS4 games for easy port and play. Quickly realized it was not working, then connected to the back. No problems since! Good tips for new PS5 owners!
Thought this was click-bait the other day when I came across this, but this was actually useful. I was wondering how you would safely eject it and didn't know you had to use the USB slots on the back. So big thanks, good work :)
1:07 hmmm... other RUclips videos show that not only does plugging an external drive into the front port work, it delivers exactly the same performance in extensive tests as the back ports.
Another tip I would recommend is to take advantage of the type C connector on the front. I am using a NVME M.2 970 evo pro 2TB (like the one on my PC), and i have bought on amazon a NVME adaptor that connects with type C. Now games work super fast and personally its the way to play on PS5! Plus no more texture pop ups on ps4 games but yet i will be testing ps5 games to see if the 5GB speeds on ps5 really make a difference.
I got my Series X first then I just got my PS5 last week and Im in love with the PS5! The only complaint I have is only having 600BG of storage. Ive heard that external hard drives cause PS5 to brick sometimes so Ive been cautious about which one I get and use.
Those don’t work for playing the ps5 games off the system though you need to buy the internal hardrive in order to download and play games with a hard drive
Just for clarification.. i always unplugged my external drive from my PS4 after shutting it off. This would still work with the PS5 or do i really have to always disconect it first in the settings before unplugging? Would be great if someone can answer. :)
A few additional tips: 1. You can use the front USB-C port for external storage. But I'd strongly recommend anyone to use the ports on the rear. You'll need the front USB Type-C port in the future for PlayStation's next VR headset. That's if -off course- you're planning on getting one in the future. I'd strongly recommend everyone to use the ports in the rear. The front USB-C uses a controller with Display-alternate mode which suggests that it's highly likely you'll need it for VR. You can get a good male Type-C to female Type-A adapter for a few bucks if you haven't got a Type-A (OG) cable in the box. 2. Don't put a USB-hub between your PS5 and your external drive. It will simply not work. You'll have to put the external drive directly to your PS5. 3. USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen. 1 are the same. Higher number are just fine, just make sure you're drive is at least 3.0. 4. If you can afford it, get an external SSD instead of an external HDD. RUclips channel Digital Foundry has a good video showing what the benefits are of playing PS4 games from an external SSD.

I originally bought that drive when the patch for external storage went live for the PS4.
@@screensanctum Good question. The only use I have heard of for a flash drive with at least the PS4 was to reinitialize the OS. I wouldn’t see why not though being as I’ve heard stories about people backing up game data on flash drives.
Good info, for this and any modern high speed data transfer devices. like others have pointed out, it’s the high bit rate ports that you want to use. USB 3 and higher (the blue ones) or the USB C port (use appropriate adapter if needed) Cheers!
I bought a 12TB External HDD for my PS5 and found out the hard way that the PS5 only supports up to 8TB. Luckily I had a 8TB 7200rpm Seagate IronWolf in my PC so I opened up the case to the 12TB External HDD which turned out to be an Seagate Exos Enterprise 7200rpm on the inside. I put that inside my PC and put the IronWolf inside the External enclosure and it works perfectly. Load times are great too.
@@FRMC_SALMON Yeah I would've been disappointed lol. Messed up thing is I remember reading that the PS5 only supported up to 8TB awhile before I bought the 12TB but somewhere I completely forgot about it until I started looking up solutions and it hit me.
Thanks for the Quick and very helpful tips on this subject. Some info that I think would have also been helpful to include in this video includes: >You do provide technical details about the minimum and maximum external HDD/SSD sizes that the PS5 supports. >You do indicate that not all HDD/SSD are compatible. It would be valuable information to also include details about what type of Format properties should be used when formatting an external HDD/SSD to use with the PS5. It is my understanding that when using a USB Flash/Thumb Drive to import/export Save Game Data, etc. that it must be formatted to either FAT32 or exFAT in order to use it for these purposes.
Yeah mine didn't seem to work with the back one and just kind of assumed I'd have to wait for a system update. Tried it in the front and it's been smooth sailing ever since.
Same here, had mine like that for months with no problems. Then I needed the front usb c port for my arctic 7p headset so I changed over to a a usb A 3.1 cable and the rear port. I haven’t noticed any difference whatsoever
I use a WD 5TB Ext. HDD. It works well. You just have to format it when you hook it up, which the PS5 Recognizes and does for you. Just don’t ever pull it out, without SAFELY EJECTING it first; other than that, you’re good. :)
@@rubyt45 i think the PS5 games are obviously faster on the Int. SSD, but sometimes on certain PS5 games that are in the Ext.HDD; I do feel like they are slightly faster than when they were on the Int.SSD before I ran out of space and transferred them onto the Ext. Nice tip, I wish the console would support two devices plugged into your rear ports like it did on the PS4. You still had to change storage types from the menu but you didn’t need to use the same port. On PS5 only one of the two ports is recognized at any one time.
I was having a problem with my ps5 hdmi port and I don’t see anything visually wrong with it techwizo got it fixed thanks to him 👍

I just got my ps5 today and went on RUclips as I wanted to find reviews for games and your video popped up first and I’m like “okay I better watch jusssssst in case
how did you get it?
You can plug it into the front USB-C port. The official documentation says so.
And it says it is recommended too. My ssd does not work with the rear ports. I get an error message
I think the rear port works better tho
@@huiba1 No, it works the same because it's a Super Speed port. The only port that's *not* Super Speed is the USB-A front port. The video creator didn't even bother to explain the difference, lol...
@@ArcadianGenesis hmm yeah idk i use the rear because I use the front to charge my controller
@@huiba1 Just to clarify, I'm talking about the small Type-C front port. The caveat is, you need a Micro-B to Type-C cable to connect a storage drive to that port, which is like $5 on amazon.
is there a real reason 8tb is the max capacity? i think its a limitation sony put in the firmware but didnt have a real reason to do so.
I actually use the same Western Digital 4tb that I used for the ps4. Since I saved all my games on the hard drive, it was that much easier to just plug and play on PS5. Thanks for the tips.
doesn't it need to be an external ssd instead of hdd?
@@hannesdeklerck at least not in my case, all my games work with no issues.

How about connecting the external SSD thru the USB-C port at the front??
Yeah that’s how I use my Samsung T7 SSD I’m using the USB type C port and it’s being good so far.
That's where SONY actually tells you to install the USB-C SSD hard drive in the front.
Thats fine. Digital Foundry just posted a speed comparison video using a variety of drive types, and they recommend to use the front usb c
Got my SSD drive connected through the front port and it’s working fine...

Just managed to purchase a PS5 after two years! Never used an external hard drive with my PS4. Can you play games directly from the hard drive? Maybe you could do a video demonstrating how a hard drive is used, please?
I have Samsung T7 and I use the front USB C port its just as fast as the back ports. Been using it this way since December no problems
I have the T7 and I’m using the front USB C as well so it can be C to C.
Agreed. I just made a comment about that too.
Cool thought I was the only one doing this. I have the T7 too lol
I have a Crucial X8, and it wouldn't even format when plugged into the back. It has a C to C plug, with a USB adapter. If I use the adapter, in the back ports, the console won't recognize the SSD. If I ditch the adapter, and use the front USB C port, it works perfectly
Ditto
I have same drive since ps4 days, I'm so glad I can use ps4 and ps5 games on the same drive 😁😁
It's sad that Sony gave the PS5 only 2 USB ports on the back. Mine are both blocked by the VR box and camera.

It doesn’t.
Now that I finally have a ps5, I can actually use your tips and tricks video, you go mate! ❤️

Don't worry dude you'll get one soon(starting to see more and more friends getting sorted recently) and honestly you're not missing much other than faster load times, Demon Souls is good and the pad is amazing other than that I'm still playing mostly PS4 games just on the Ps5 now
And yeah you do need a external hard drive cause you only have 625gb storage on the console itself most of my PS4 games were already on a Seagate harddrive and it was as simple as plug and play real smooth process very handy not having to download over 5tb worth of games again

A few additional tips:
Can you tell me of a ps5 compatible external ssd or external hdd at least with 1tb that I can plug on the USB-C port on the front of the ps5?im having trouble finding one(I would appreciate a link.)
@@drizztdourden666 I would imagine nearly anything made in the last 5 years would do the trick.
I just moved my HDD from my PS4 over to my PS5 and haven’t noticed any compatibility issues due to the fact it is recognizing it and all the games on it. I originally bought that drive when the patch for external storage went live for the PS4.
@@dirgeofdementia OK thanks
Can you use a thumb drive if all you want to do is transfer pictures and videos from media gallery?
@@screensanctum Good question. The only use I have heard of for a flash drive with at least the PS4 was to reinitialize the OS.
I wouldn’t see why not though being as I’ve heard stories about people backing up game data on flash drives.
That's hilarious, I had no idea there was an 8TB limit but that's what i ended up buying and I always used the back usb(s).
Good info, for this and any modern high speed data transfer devices. like others have pointed out, it’s the high bit rate ports that you want to use. USB 3 and higher (the blue ones) or the USB C port (use appropriate adapter if needed) Cheers!
Is there an external SSD to use with ps5?
I think the manual says they prefer you use the USB-C port for plug in up front for external HDD.
Never
I bought a 12TB External HDD for my PS5 and found out the hard way that the PS5 only supports up to 8TB.
Damn that was clutch since you had a pc imagine if you bought that but couldn’t use it
@@FRMC_SALMON Yeah I would've been disappointed lol. Messed up thing is I remember reading that the PS5 only supported up to 8TB awhile before I bought the 12TB but somewhere I completely forgot about it until I started looking up solutions and it hit me.

Thanks for the Quick and very helpful tips on this subject. Some info that I think would have also been helpful to include in this video includes:
>You do provide technical details about the minimum and maximum external HDD/SSD sizes that the PS5 supports.
>You do indicate that not all HDD/SSD are compatible. It would be valuable information to also include details about
what type of Format properties should be used when formatting an external HDD/SSD to use with the PS5.
It is my understanding that when using a USB Flash/Thumb Drive to import/export Save Game Data, etc. that it must be formatted to either
FAT32 or exFAT in order to use it for these purposes.
1:20 Good tip, but as long as your console doesn't interact with the drive in any way sort or form, then you can unplug it as you would do on the PC.

Same here I have my 500gb Samsung t5 plugged into the front type c port and have had no issues
I use a WD 5TB Ext. HDD. It works well. You just have to format it when you hook it up, which the PS5 Recognizes and does for you. Just don’t ever pull it out, without SAFELY EJECTING it first; other than that, you’re good. :)
Did you notice any speed/performance differences using an HDD vs a SSD external?
@@rubyt45 i think the PS5 games are obviously faster on the Int. SSD, but sometimes on certain PS5 games that are in the Ext.HDD; I do feel like they are slightly faster than when they were on the Int.SSD before I ran out of space and transferred them onto the Ext.
It’s weird. All in all, maybe a little faster for larger games, like COD, cuz of the extra room on the HDD? Lol less work than when on the Int. SSD.

You still had to change storage types from the menu but you didn’t need to use the same port. On PS5 only one of the two ports is recognized at any one time. This is annoying as I use an external SSD & an external hard drive.
