I have been a musician playing the bass guitar and regular guitar for over 50 years of my life I also cannot read nor write a single note of music. But my ear and my mind tell me what I like. Wether I'm listening to it or playing it. I can easily relate to these composers and entertainers.
Another tidbit along the same line...did you know that neither Bob Shane nor Nick Reynolds (two of the founding members of the famed Kington Trio) never knew how to read music.
