Can you use this practice on any fire surround? Im not 100% what wood my fire surround is made from?

Why not just unscrew it from the wall and lay it down flat on a plastic sheet to paint it ?

You could do if it's suitable to do so! But Frenchic get a lot of questions and emails about how to paint one that stays in situ!
