I just recently started running again. And for the better part of two years I've been lifting weights and avoiding carbs. Relative to how far I'm running and how often I run how much should I increase carbs? Should I increase carbs?
Is it just me or does anyone else feel as if it’s difficult to walk at a normal speed after being a runner. Like when I’m with a group friends it feels like they’re walking so slow😂. its hard to walk slow.
@@LuisMartinez-ih2oc No problem with walking slow, but running slow is much more uncomfortable and tiring for me. I try to slow down by a minute/mile for recovery runs, and that's just so much more difficult-seeming than my normal pace.
Have a funny story about that. I go on my long runs early Sunday mornings before anyone wakes up and I've done that for the whole of my kids' lives. My oldest was 8 before she ever realized I was a runner. All they knew was that daddy made breakfast every Sunday and it was kind of special for them. My oldest is now 13 and training for her first cross country season. She came to me recently, beating on me and screaming "how could you" and "you're evil". I'm confused and asking what I did and she says "all these years, all the 'daddy's special breakfasts'. The only reason you made breakfast was because Mom was still in bed and you just needed to refuel after your long run". What can I say, she got me, lol.
I have noticed that we perceive distances differently with no runners. For them getting somewhere 5k away is super far and they need to go by car, for us its just the minimum we ever go by foot.

I ran a half today. Went out for lunch at the pub at the end of the race. While waiting for my food was faced with the dilema: my sports bra was soaked and really uncomfortable. I was alone. Did I go change and come back? I didn't want to leave and find my stuff stolen. If I took my stuff with me, I was afraid when they brought the food out they'd think I d left. I had my hand under my shirt and the ora partly off before I realized I probably shouldn't do that in public.

From what I found out from reading an article on the Runner's World website, losing strength in your core areas causes your knees to work harder. Since I have been doing deep knee bends, walking lunges, and side-to-side lunges, my knee pain has gone away. This has also has a side benefit of allowing me to run further: 7+ miles at a time. I'm also looking at adding something called planks into my strengthening routine. I'm 60 years old, just as a point of reference.
Fortunately myself doctor is a runner himself, so when I went to him with knee pain, having ascertained it wasn't arthritis, he looked at my stance and diagnosed that I was over-pronating and told me to get a gait analysis done (even recommended the shop), so I got proper supporting shoes, did leg muscle strengthening exercises and was fixed up.

I know where every port o potty is. I know where I can get water and I know where I can secretly park and no one will mess with my truck. I also know what I need to wear based on temp, humidity and wind speed and direction. For instance, I have 5 different head garments (Full face skull cap, heavy skull cap, light skull cap, hat and visor) i choose based on these factors. And various combinations of running clothes as per the weather factors previously mentioned.

I’ve definitely had the experience of having people ask about my run for the day and replying without thinking “ONLY 8 miles”, to which their jaws hit the floor in disbelief. I’m not trying to get that reaction, but when you have a 22 mile long run later in the week, 8 miles is ONLY 8 miles to you.
I lose one (the same one) every time I train for a long race. This year, the thing hung on and hung on, through back to back marathons, when it finally came off, the new one was already black underneath it. Oh well. I guess I will proudly have a permanently black toenail!
This is absolutely perfect. My client set a personal record in a 5K run today. Just because he could. He just started running several months ago for the first time, really , in his whole life. I sent him this video to help him, celebrate his indoctrination. (And I’m proud to be his trainer!!)

Unless it's a quick walk break to take a sip of water or to dip into a shop to take advantage of their facilities. All of the shops within 10 miles of my apartment know me because I've stopped in desperate need of a restroom at some point even restaurants are usually sympathetic...

I take 3 pairs of shoes to just one day of comp cause I have my sprinting spikes for hurdles, 400, relay and sometimes 100s and 60s. I also have my distance spikes for 800, 1500, 3000. I also have my trainers for off track and steeple chase.
Aim downwards, not to the side, then it only hits your shirt. If you have to do the side, then make sure no one’s too close to you. Take some tissues or a paper towel. That’s all I can come up with. Wait, was this a joke post? Ohhhhhhh
WRT to the snot rocket, I was talking to runner who was an MD. He said that what he does is blow his nose into his sleeve. It dries out and also it goes in the washing machine. You can always rotate the sleeve and use the back side or make a cuff. Works well to me and stops the spread of diseases!
Yes guilty of a few of these! My last run had a bad runny nose so just grabbed a leaf from a tree and used that (all while running!) If I wasn't on a run wouldn't even do that! Now that's weird lol
My work friends wanted to go out so I recommend a bar we could walk to. They said ok and asked me how far it was from the train. I said 10 blocks and their jaws dropped. I definitely understand the warped sense of distance!
At the GNR this year they announced that there was plenty of toilets and not to use the bushes and trees. As we walked down to the starting pens there was men and women running up the banks for a pre race loo break
@@runningchannel when the GNR started there were grass banks on both sides. I believe they planted the bushes for the event's "needs". One year someone decided to video in the bushes. Citizen's arrest and they subsequently went to prison!
Oh man, this video got me laughing so hard!! Although, the only one I've personally done is saying, "ONLY 10 miles, haha - many teammates have done the unconventional snot-blowing. BUT, the not using a bathroom is common among non-runners in the Western United States...we country people don't care :) And I've never understood the black&blue toenails. I've NEVER had issue with that, but my siblings, dad and teammates have. Maybe I'm more careful than average about my foot strike and appropriate shoe sizing, haha
I like to pop out at lunch time where I work - I'm lucky in that there's a gym in the building, but I work very close to Brighton seafront (I can see the sea from my office window). I think nothing of popping out for pace runs or distance runs, I came back today having done 12 miles and a colleague had seen me from their bus coming to work. I was heading the other way! People find it hard to believe I'd run 12 miles today, I can't make it Strava official until this evening but showed them my profile for the last week and they're stunned. 1,200 miles for the year so far blew their minds too! Enjoying the channel, and joined the Strava group - let me know if you're back filming in Brighton and Hove any time soon! :)
Not Sleeping in and going to bed really early. That's something my non running friends think is crazy. Waking up at 3am to get a running workout in before the day. Going to bed at 630or7pm is weird for them too.
one of my colleagues at work is also a runner, out of the whole team we are the only two runners so when we starting talking about all of the above we know exactly what we are on about an others just look puzzled at us! most of the people i know are always baffled why i optionally pay to run miles i don't think they will ever get there head around it!
Sometimes I do run with a limp but not from a fresh injury! I broke my left ankle a year ago and had surgery on it. My doctor cleared me to run so hey if it’s gonna hurt no matter what, might as well do what I love!
I can definitely relate I’m a beginners runner and I’ve done some of those things that you have to been describing here anyway I’m new to the channel and I like it
I can relate big time to the second run for the day. Being a football referee as well as a trail runner there have been days where I have done 5-6 games during the day and then still gone for a run later in the evening
Scheduling social events around your training. My friends all know I’m basically unavailable Saturday mornings but I’ll be ready to reward myself that night!
Still using a hankie here, I'm one of those people who would do an epically failed snot rocket and end up having to wear it like a medal of shame for the rest of my run. Bit like when I got too far in to my own head when taking a drink once and forgot to swallow it all 😏
To save on the bleeding nipple, polyester with spandex mix shirt or reg shirt just bigger size helps tons. The Band-Aids gets sweaty and falls off for me. Hope this can help.
Nice video the one about non runners is true, when I told someone I have run a half marathon they drop there jaw in amazement, like she never could believe that someone would do that. Evidently not her cup of tea.
I appreciate the use of lavalier mics, but it's hard to ignore the ferret-like ball hanging from your necks. Get some double sided tape and attach the microphone inside the shirts. Second, please color balance your camera before shooting. You look very blue. Aside from these technical issues, I love your content. I loved the New York marathon video. Cried multiples times.
One thing I don’t understand is two pairs of sports shoes - if you are going to a sporting event just wear the ones you will eventually use right? As a sports person I wear my running clothes to class to motivate myself to go for a run later
Yes!!! LoL!! The one about runners making a lot of miles not sound like a big deal gets me every time. As a new runner, I'm often discouraged when I hear a runner or run coach talk about doing just 20-30 miles/WK is fine if you're a beginner. I think yikes, then what am I at just under 10 miles per week 😦.
Saving your legs for your long run as an excuse for not spending the day shopping with your spouse, and having an obsessive need to do recovery activities and not just lying on the couch (which feels really good at the end of a hard training block, though).
Doctor: You need to rest that leg for 1 week. Runner: Can I run home tho? Doctor: Have you been listening to me? Runner: No, I don't have allergies. No one will ever understand us unless is a runner/marathoner

In my early days as a runner I did not understand people running the course for a second time, then some of my coworkers began running with me and racing, so what I use todo is finish my race as fast as I could then go back and find them so we can finish together. Ps. I am the oldest runner of the group, but still the fastest

Me *in my coffin*
Also me *goes for a run anyway*
😂 tut tut!
Someone once asked me how far I ran on a Sunday morning.
I said three hours, they said WTF.
Missing the "rungries"...oh my gosh. The phenomenon where I will eat peanut butter from the jar because I'm so starved after a long run.
Go for a run before a meal! You get to run without things sloshing in your stomach, and you can eat right after.
When me and my cross country friends are just singing and goofing of on cool downs or warm-ups and the other sports are like. How are you not in pain.
My team’s the same and hardly take anything seriously.
Yesss so true 😂 bc "tHatS tOo mUcH wOrK"
When you tell your buddies eye laser surgery wasn’t tough because you were allowed to run already after three days
😂 Hardcore!

Thank god! I'm about to get eye laser surgery and I'm already dreading the forced rest days.
Me: *calls my friend* hey I'm outside your house
Friend: Wait, what? How did you get here, omg, I'm coming out *walks out*
Me: Heyyyyy
Friend: How DID YOU GET HERE?!
Me: I ran, it was just 6 miles
Friend: ..... !!!!
Friend again: si- si- six... six miles??
Me:... yeah, is that a problem?
Friend: why are all my friends so crazy?
and this is my life everyday lol, who relates?
Ha
Couch potato friend, "how long is a marathon?" It's two half Snickers joined together!
You mentioned Strava. I want to follow you.
Hey Lee. Join our Strava club!
www.strava.com/clubs/the-running-channel-479648
Physio: you can go back to easy miles after your injury.
Me: so i can do 8 miles.??
Physio: Get out.
I broke my knee and shin once and asked the specialist "How long until I can run, about four weeks?" Lol!!
🤣 that’s so true!
Chris McGrath LMFAO! Yup!
I’ve had to explain to my friends that I actually like running!😂 their like “You RAN 2 miles! Why would you do that to yourself!”
My answers always the same
“I like running”
😂😂
For me it's also being happier during autumn/winter because I hate running in the heat and non runners think I am crazy and whenever i go somewhere within a reasonable running distance with car/public transport or walking (because I am with some non runner person) I always think/say how long it would have taken if I run there
😅 we do that too!!
Got another one today
Colleague : did you go running during the lunch break?
Me: yes
Colleague: but it's raining
Me:...
"Not sitting in the evening" just make me laugh (never though about it). It is so true , You never want to "waste" time just sitting on the sofa so at least You can make stretches or foam rolls . Unless You are alone and You can watch all "The Running channel" videos or other running stuff:-D

Lost my first toenail after this years London Marathon, I classed it as a running achievement 😂
It’s kind of better than the medal, right?? 😂
Bronze it
I lose one (the same one) every time I train for a long race. This year, the thing hung on and hung on, through back to back marathons, when it finally came off, the new one was already black underneath it. Oh well. I guess I will proudly have a permanently black toenail!
Totally agree on the wrapped sense of distance.
Only if my climate is cooler and dryer, I would run to work and run home from work...
This is absolutely perfect. My client set a personal record in a 5K run today. Just because he could. He just started running several months ago for the first time, really , in his whole life. I sent him this video to help him, celebrate his indoctrination. (And I’m proud to be his trainer!!)
Run before and after work and even on lunch hour
As a cyclist I was used to peeing while cycling (in races). So everything else seemed so much more dignified.
Ehm do you pull it out or do you just do it through your shorts??? I'm intrigued
One more could have been we don’t do one step that’s not running in our running shoes
So true, Igor! Running shoes are for exactly that - RUNNING!

Already have
Unless it's a quick walk break to take a sip of water or to dip into a shop to take advantage of their facilities. All of the shops within 10 miles of my apartment know me because I've stopped in desperate need of a restroom at some point even restaurants are usually sympathetic...
You know the distance between lamp posts, road signs, farm gates etc indicating how far you are away from home!
From every direction. Lol.
Yup. My parents came to visit and we went for a walk. They didn't want to go for more than two miles. So I told them (wo my tracking app being on) when we were exactly a mile away so we could turn around
Absolutely brilliant show. Fell down laughing.... can relate to all (repeat )all the activities ....Keep it rolling team runners!
Ha, thanks!
Absolutely brilliant, loved this video, well done guys
Thanks!
A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?
To go along with different pairs of shoes, how about owning multiple pairs of the same shoe, even same coloring.
Once you’ve got your pair that suits it’s hard to go back!
Nike zoom streak (6 or 7) - I only buy them, I have 5 pairs same color and for different purpose. 1) for casual everyday show, 2) For Gym (needs to be clean all the time store it in the gym too. 3) For outdoor training 4) RACING shoe ! . 5) too old to be used for casual everyday, use it in the garden (or other dirty work)
😅😅
2 and 10 for sure. Can’t bring myself to do a snot rocket though....
...you never know why you might need to do one...
@@runningchannel Well if Anna says it's ok then maybe I'll give it a go......
It's hard to do it in front of people
You missed one.you going out in the rain lol
Skin's waterproof! 🤷🏻♀️

Arms and feet stretching exercices when talking to someone or when working :)
You wear shorts & just a short sleeve shirt when the temperature is just 10°C (50°F), and you don't feel cold; after 2 miles you're actually swearing.
I'm definitely the nose blower haha and warped sense of distance guy
I take 3 pairs of shoes to just one day of comp cause I have my sprinting spikes for hurdles, 400, relay and sometimes 100s and 60s. I also have my distance spikes for 800, 1500, 3000. I also have my trainers for off track and steeple chase.
You totally need to do a Snot Rocket technique video ;-)
Ewww
Definitely, judging the wind direction is very important 👃
I need some sort of exercise video for this because one nostril can do it, the other is a bit weak and it just ends up dribbling onto my leg.
Yeah, usually the snot just ends up all over my face
Omg ! The mile one race potty breaks I’ve seen by people 🏃🏻🏃♀️(and can’t unsee) 😂🤣
You can never unsee them.
Love your channel!! Keep the great work up!!
Thanks so much!
I can pretty much resonate with 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 ( I have 5 pairs of trainers/spikes!) and 11 (although I don't get injured that often, thankfully)
My work friends wanted to go out so I recommend a bar we could walk to. They said ok and asked me how far it was from the train. I said 10 blocks and their jaws dropped. I definitely understand the warped sense of distance!
😂
I'm am loving this channel. So funny how it is so true.
Thanks Doug!
This vid right here, this one, sold me and I am subbing!
I am hike person, weekends are my go to hikes in morning coming back just in time for breakfast.
😆😆 Excellent list & descriptions. Hilarious because they are so true!!!
At the GNR this year they announced that there was plenty of toilets and not to use the bushes and trees. As we walked down to the starting pens there was men and women running up the banks for a pre race loo break
When you’ve gotta go...😬
@@runningchannel when the GNR started there were grass banks on both sides. I believe they planted the bushes for the event's "needs". One year someone decided to video in the bushes. Citizen's arrest and they subsequently went to prison!
You left out the part when you go on a weekend for a race early morning instead of staying in bad and resting home.
Thanks Kieran. We’ll be back for the marathon 👍
Well done guys for putting this together. Been on both sides of the table - was laughing and saying "yeah that's me" on each of the 11 points.
Hahah glad you liked it!
Sounds like a good plan!
This is so true my coach does almost all these things and so do almost all our xc runners
Snot Rocket, aka Dustman's Blow
Haha! Not heard that one before!
I'm totally guilty of number 9. Sometimes, I even decide that the pair I already have on is more suitable for my run and not change at all!
Nice video the one about non runners is true, when I told someone I have run a half marathon they drop there jaw in amazement, like she never could believe that someone would do that. Evidently not her cup of tea.
Hahah!
🤣🤣 the toe nail one! 💯! I'm a nail technician n people always ask why my feet never on show and when they are, Black polish all the way! Xxx
I can relate 100%, you guys are hilarious 😂
Ha! Thank you ☺️ Takes a runner to know a runner, right?
I appreciate the use of lavalier mics, but it's hard to ignore the ferret-like ball hanging from your necks. Get some double sided tape and attach the microphone inside the shirts.
Second, please color balance your camera before shooting. You look very blue.
Aside from these technical issues, I love your content. I loved the New York marathon video. Cried multiples times.
Thanks for the feedback (Anna)
One thing I don’t understand is two pairs of sports shoes - if you are going to a sporting event just wear the ones you will eventually use right?
As a sports person I wear my running clothes to class to motivate myself to go for a run later
Yes!!! LoL!! The one about runners making a lot of miles not sound like a big deal gets me every time. As a new runner, I'm often discouraged when I hear a runner or run coach talk about doing just 20-30 miles/WK is fine if you're a beginner. I think yikes, then what am I at just under 10 miles per week 😦.
"Warped sense of distance", definitely this.
When I worked in a group environment three of us would jump out of seats at break time for a full blown run.
Saving your legs for your long run as an excuse for not spending the day shopping with your spouse, and having an obsessive need to do recovery activities and not just lying on the couch (which feels really good at the end of a hard training block, though).
Subscribed..... Had no idea I was this weird. Pretty accurate description of me.... Damn!
We're all weird here! Welcome!
Doctor: You need to rest that leg for 1 week.
Runner: Can I run home tho?
Doctor: Have you been listening to me?
Runner: No, I don't have allergies.
No one will ever understand us unless is a runner/marathoner
true... Oh, so very true. Try describing Fartleks or pyramids... and #10.... we really should not mention that one... (but, true)
Haha 😆
Non-runners are the weirdos for sure! Another great video!
They certainly are! Thanks for watching, as ever 🙌
Insane heat or freezing cold is no excuse. We brave it all.
Going on holidays means new running tracks not time off. :)
Exactly! Great way of thinking of it Melissa - new adventures and a change of running scenery is the best 🙌

How about doing stretches on the street even when not running
12. Cheat at marathons
11 is the most relatable thing. Resting is just not a thing for me
Love you guys.!
We love you too 🙌
In my early days as a runner I did not understand people running the course for a second time, then some of my coworkers began running with me and racing, so what I use todo is finish my race as fast as I could then go back and find them so we can finish together. Ps. I am the oldest runner of the group, but still the fastest
