After seeing 2 relatives apply and get approved for SSDI, the take away i had was anyone can become unable to be gainfully employed. If the average person thinks they can judge by looks if someone is entitled, by your eyes, you are a godless idiot. You have no legal right to judge. Why do Americans have such a problem and look at handicapped adults as less than human? This is a big problem, don’t put salt in an open wound!!! Perfect example; my spouse parked in a a handicapped parking spot. Some old lady walked up to him to tell him some stupid remark about not taking away the spot from others with a sticker. He had a permit! She automatically thought he had to walk with a walker!!! How absurd people are. He has 2 major health reasons to have a permit and guess what, YOU CANT SEE THE DISABILITY to the naked eye!!! Maybe if they had more handicapped spots, this wouldn’t really be such a problem. Statistically, more people can get disabled so don’t think they don’t exist. Thanks for reading. Sincerely, a passionate advocate

My father was 93 years old with macular degeneration and couldn’t see and couldn’t hardly walk, and he still insisted that I park the car further away to leave the space for somebody who needs it. There are people with heart problems etc. who the spaces are made for but they don’t necessarily show their disabilities publicly.
On the other hand, I knew people in a little town next to me and it seems like every single person had a disability space card they could hang on their mirror. I mentioned that to someone and they said oh if you want one just go to doctor xxxx. I have some minor disabilities and a major problem with my neck, but my legs work fantastic and I have a strong heart. I actually parked very far away from the door so nobody runs into the car. The funny thing, people being the social animals they are, I could park 30 spaces away from where everybody is just to not be next to anyone, and when I come out, I guarantee you there are two cars parked along side of me. lol. Must be a mental thing people have. Maybe they can’t judge with the line so they have to be next to a car? Who the hell knows. I actually came here after watching tonight‘s segment on over payments and under payments. I was surprised that Social Security has pretty much total discretion. In one case, they said the evidence did exist so guy who collected through his mother when he was 11 years old after having polio at a younger age, they said he wasn’t eligible at 11 so his mother should never have received the benefits. So they’re going after him now at the age of 33. They didn’t have any of the evidence in his research over months he could not find the evidence and they said we don’t know where it is or it doesn’t exist anymore it was deleted but they still insisted he pay and it comes to like 1/6th of his net.
I see where this program is going. This is simply like any program nowadays, everyone reports with blinkers on, they report what strengthens their argument and omit what weakens it.
This is because everybody wants to be Bob Woodward. Instead of simply reporting the facts and trying to be fair, they play to their audience. I don’t remember the name, but someone who ran both MSNBC and Fox cable news networks said, people should understand that cable news networks are not there to educate them. They are there to make money. Nothing could be more true. The non-cable networks may have biased, but nothing is as bad as cable news networks. They should be called cable news opinion networks.
60 Minutes did not look conservative today. Not at all. But what is conservative and what is liberal changes for each individual. It’s all about perspective. Just like a work of art, the further you move one way, the further the middle moves with you. I have yet to see anyone in this world who does not have some type of bias.

When a specialist makes a decision, it is not the patient on SSI's recipient's fault. To have a saying in the matter one must be a specialist, not a person out of the SSI system. Because they cannot understand this unless they are directly involved with it. Nobody should be diagnosed by a stranger based upon his/her appearance, especially without through knowledge of what happened to that particular person that apparently has nothing wrong with his life. The fact that somebody "looks fine", doesn't necessarily means he/she is fine. Also, not everybody on SSI is happy with that income and that's why the transition programs are in place for. A lot of them make it to recovery and are productive persons to society. They don't have to face the stigma anymore and have dignified and respectful lives.

Getting SSI disability was a very hard thing to go through. They assume you're a liar and treat you that way. I finally got mine after hiring an attorney. I'm positive my appeal would have been denied without legal help. There was no sympathy whatsoever and their only motivation was to deny it. I think they drag it out so long hoping you'll die. Finally my attorney prevailed but only at the cost of giving up years of back pay; selling out my past for my future. He said I would not have gotten it without bargining with them and I saw that was true. So now I get $735 mo plus $86 for food. It's impossible to survive on that amount.

I agree with you that I think they are hoping you will die or give up. They act like if you're over 50 you're a shoo-in but that isn't true. I'm 57 and I applied 3 years ago, even after a hearing and I still got denied. I'm still trying to get it 3 years later.

60 Minutes should review the 2015 version of SSDI in Michigan City, Indiana. My wife has fought for her son several times due to his disability, and lost several times because she wasn't married. Now that she is married and after 9 years of fighting, she won in 2008. She was granted $540.00 for her and her son to live off of. Then in September of 2010 they took back her benefits. She was threatened, bullied and they tried to bribe her to pay $10,000 that day and she will be reinstated. Really. I give my wife credit she hasn't stopped fighting to be reinstated. Not re file but to be reinstated. She's contacted Senators, Congressman, Councilman, The Government as well as The President. A lot of empty promises. She should not be held accountable if her information wasn't entered correctly. She shouldn't of been treated like a criminal either. They have the video tape of the day they harassed her, court documents as well. My wife also recorded their conversations with the conversations with the Director of the SSI here in town, due to there memory loss. And they were laughing at her. She recently sent an email to Sen. Tallian and contacted the Civil Rights Dept. here in town which she was told she needs to get another Attorney. No one bothered to look into the 2 discrimination claims she filed. Not one person has stepped up to help my wife. I think someone should investigate them, and their SS doctors. She's not going to get better. And they said she lost her benefits in 2014. No they stopped them in 2010. She has the proof. So where did that money go. They said for her to go online to re-file But yet they have blocked her access to do so. I can't blame her for not wanting to walk into the same building and re-file and face the same people who bullied her before. She should have been re-instated, and her son should have received his own benefits when she filed for him. Instead they turned her and her son's situation into a full blown joke. To bully someone is bad enough, but to bully and threaten a disabled person, is just sick. Someone should really take a closer look at how this Administration is ran. And by who. Lets look into their back rounds and put them through hell like they have put my wife through. Someone should really take a closer look at this situation, I guarantee what documents they've misplaced she has. Not to mention all the recordings and the times, names and dates of everyone, she has spoke to. Some system we have going here for the disabled. Sincerely Scott

Once you have a relative that you care for who draws social security disability then you know what it’s like in America to have needs. Most of the money they do get is never enough to live on. You’ll have family members digging into their savings to support them, experiencing major financial hardships. Meanwhile, the program actually writes you letters every couple years looking to check out if you are still unable to be employed. Come to Canada, you’ll see the REAL way people get treated. They never bug you they leave you the f**k alone! Once you are disabled there, they are much more understanding. The doctors don’t write phoney supporting letters, they have better healthcare, they are the country that respects and treats them as human beings. US should take a look at how they do it right there. My husband became sick after age 48 after working many years and he is treated like a human being and draws a living income in Canada and yes he paid into it, don’t think everyone is bullshitting, you’ve been brainwashed by stupid notions that they are all scammers.

A curious, or even paradoxical characterization, "it's a crime that it's [been] going on." I wasn't until that reinforcement that I was clear as to what was being asserted was a characterization of prosecuting (or 'persecuting') perspectives and actions of authority, as there was a very revealing ambiguity in the initial statement, "they're going after the disabled which ... in this country is a crime." Essentially that is how the authorities forging opinion (and fraudulently at that, validating that it is a crime), are framing the disabled and disabilities, with criminals and crime.

And have to make up in your mind that you can’t live up to other people anymore, you can’t play ball, you can’t go out to the beach, hang out at parties, cause you have been shut out by your pals and work buds. Your life as you knew it is over, and you have no way to avoid the truth that you’re a cripple. I can tell you have not had that problem, I will pray for you tonight. Save your prayers for someone who believes in God. Those people who abandoned you, were not your friends as they could have still been part of your life.

Also why would I get airplanes flying over just by starting my propane grill . I Have had so much "survailance" or what some have called psyicail torture and it has agervater severail of my medicail conditions like my ocd, depresion muscle spasms and bleeding ulcer and may have contributed to my heart atack I have been a victom of what I feel is posibilty the worst case of a peronid goverment over acting on one of its disabled citzens..I dont even like going outside or any were as I get followed . I have been under survailance for proberty over 12 years or more . Even when my mom was on her death bed. Does any one think their is somthing wrong with picure ? I would guess that posibilty if they think that they have so much money on this matter that possibilty they have been listining to everything I have said And its been so extream it has caused me to investgate this matter in detail,. What righr do they have to try to strip away my bill of rights ? I was told by two judges I could use the 5th in court, I was baker acked twice at a cost of around $90,000 and I was never a threat to my self or others they took my guns away and wanted hundreds of dollers just to try to get them back. Do they plan on following me for the rest of my life ? If so would it not be cheaper to think about relocation if you find me and my disabled wife to be such a threat ? Is this some kind of war or conspersy aginst me ? Two judges even told me I could not use the fith in pasco FL, maybe cops shuld have investagatedated why I had to go years and years before getting aproved for SSD my disabled better half fractured her vertbra ,brain tumor on her brain stem and became diabled at about the same time, Here are some of my impairments about 30 pounds of MRI's . I have a long list of impairments 3 herniated discs in my lumbar three fractured vertebrae in my thoracic bulging discs in my neck along with a pinched nerve, DDD,OA, stenosis, OCD,ECT. and also was deniged for years also she worked at a hospitail with no medicail coverage and could no get nesserary medacail coverage and was told it was because we did not have any childern . Does any one think thak I might be owed some type of finacail compasiton so I can atempt to provide a better life for my better half.my self and my family as my sister just lost here house for the lack of being able to work ? This is some of the worst self serving analysis I have ever heard from the lawyers interviewed here on American Law Journal. 60 Minutes and NPR had it right. This story is at its core and economics story which was the thrust of the original NPR reporting. Lawyers have an incentive to have more people accessing this system, and man was it apparent in the lawyers interviewed here. They call the 60 minutes piece a hit piece but did not contradict one point of the story except to say that the cases presented were isolated, which very much appears to be their self-serving and subjective opinions. The NPR piece was not about corrupt lawyer but about a significant change in the economy of people moving from unemployment to disability.

Social security and ssi really needed to be regulated. I have no problem with my taxes caring for the disabled , but they don't need to receive Cash to spend on what ever. Social security and SSI need to go to a individuals treatment , care , medicine, housing, food , and clothing. They need to stop giving them straight Cash, why does my taxes need to go to someone's big screen TV . it needed to be regulated so its not spent on unneeded things. If my taxes are paying for someone's cancer treatment " that's fine " . But , when my tax dollars are being used to by someone a cappuccino maker that is a waste our taxes. So to prevent this it needs to be regulated on what it can be used for.

+Andy Wilson Hello??? Andy, you really need to educate yourself a bit here ok? You are not paying taxes to care for the disabled!! Look at your next pay stub,....WORKING PEOPLE pay into this system by law Hon. I think the original idea was, what you contribute through-out your entire life employment, should be waiting there for YOU!!! Please stop defining this as Welfare and educate yourselves! No wonder the government can get by with this,....too many ignorant citizens??? Very sad.

@@kerryberg514 Nobody gets what they pay in taxes back, they get MORE, even with all the red-tape!
Think about all the roads you drive on that you didn't have to pave yourself.
Think about all the systems in place (however imperfect or corrupted) you can call on, literally, to come help you or help you get where you need to go.
Sooo, thanks to our ancestors, working together in whatever capacity, providing us with this gift of civilization.
