Oh my goodness, like going back in time when the internet used to be the internet. I remember when the web looked like this without all the flashy content and constant ads. I had not even realized how far into the googlesphere I have fallen! I also remember LUG's, Linux User Groups. In a time long ago in a galaxy far far away, humans would actually congregate together and literally bring their computers and hook them up together and learn Linux in group meetings, together in a common space! They would help each other install Linux, setup Apache and Sendmail servers, create Beowulf cluster and use everyone's combined computing power to render huge images. Bugs Writer, thanks for bringing up what used to be the obvious! You would be an awesome person to meet at a Linux user group. In that ultimate deep Unreal Tournament voice over, I declare "IMPRESSIVE!"
Best resources to learn more about linux 1. Be a man (use the man command example man ls for seeing the manual for ls command) u can also use the --help command 2. Arch wiki Also I think learning from a RUclips tutorial from say a channel like free code camp is really good and might be better than any article on some random website
This is pretty much what I've come to find, too. A view videos here and there can maybe highlight the basic utility of some kind of software, but ultimately you have to sit down and read comprehensive manuals, texts, references etc., start practicing and tinkering in a text editor until you get enough skill to move into a development environment, and yes, it's tedious sometimes, but that's what it is. A few hours worth of colorful RUclips tutorials won't make you expert user or give you a solid knowledge base compared to the long and hard work of reading a few thousand pages of information and context. After some basic introductory work that makes you competent and skillful in a subject, you have to become your own master and teacher, set your own goals for learning, and find resources that actually help you accomplish those goals. As a chemist and biologist, I ended up loathing graduate work because you get cornered into a setting where you have to spend all your time depending on other people to create a platform to teach you things you're better off investigating on your own time, in your own way. Same thing with research projects. The glory of computer programming and administration is anyone can do it with a laptop and an internet connection without ever having to step foot in a classroom, without having to follow archaic academic rules that stifle learning and creativity, and without the shackles of the notion that you don't have control over your own growth and evolution.
You my man really a charm!!! Now-a-days every single RUclipsrs are like sell there on snake oil. And u just cut all the b.s and went straight to main thing! It's really hard to find people giving such good example!!! Lovly man!! Keep up the good work!!!!
What a blessing.... Keep sharing about these websites and blogs if you can manage (if not in video format, just put a community post). Will love to follow on.
Great video! The CPP reference is amazing, a little daunting at first but then it becomes logical to read. Also, I would recommend to anyone who goes offline sometimes to download those documents they are fairly light and super fun to have on a plane/train trip.
When I first started learning about python and linux, I always go to RUclips and watch a video related to it. But the more I learnt about linux and python the less videos were available for me to watch, after one year into linux and python I now prefer documentation instead of youtube videos because they are always on point. I didn't knew about this site till now. Thanks for sharing :D
Ohh much much thanks to you. I fell in love with linux just ecactly 3 days ago. I love reading. Deffinetly will read all of it. I am just starting out with linux and you helped a lot. Again thanks! Holy shit this is like the best most helpfull video on this subject I have ever watched. I share with you getting annoyed by same stuff
Thanks a lot bhai just came from cs50, setup arch from luke smith, arch wiki, etc and riced my neovim wanted to learn more about linux, unix and C and your video was so spot on 😮❤
Basic html websites are awesome! However, they do suffer from "long-line-itis" so I like to slap a "width: 900px; margin 0 auto;" to the body tag to center everything
Omg yes. This comes up in the blender community all the time. People want videos that'll hold their hands and tell them literally every button press. I keep telling people you need to learn to teach yourself and to experiment. Noob tutorials have their place if someone is starting from rock bottom zero knowledge, but YT and the mainstream internet are seriously lacking in anything beyond that.
Great resources, I often try to search for something and I reach the point when the blog posts are not sufficient and I need something more robust like what you mentioned. BTW the outro is Kyoresu's Lalala cover? Great taste!
Also, you need to take into account who wrote the documentation. Some rando on udemy trying to make money, or like the advanced bash scripting guide you showed, Eric S. Raymond who also wrote the "cathedral and the bazar" which is a classic computer science text.
Videos are good if you want to become a generic developer learning the common most used skills, but if you want to become an expert in something, you need to spend all your learning time reading the documentation
I have 0 tech background and I am uneducated. I need to be spoonfed because after reading through just the introduction to Linux I only understand 2% of the tech acronyms in general.
You tell that paid courses/tutorials are bad, do you mean that even free tutorials are bad? Some people are visual learners because they are lazy and some can't concentrate reading. I partly agree to your opinion you tell in this video.
Well 480p is not bad. but 1080p is better. Linux kernel 2.0 was not bad 4.0 is better. I said .. u cant learn a lot in long run with videos. Reading is better. and paid courses are bullshit.
@Terminalforlife (LL) My point was .. we don't have enough video. You can't find videos about kernel programming or shell .. also most of the time. 6 min video just tell few things which u can learn quickly by reading docs. Good for beginners. But in the end. Docs are important because it's complete. Video about sed, awk just introduce you or tell you few features. But docs/books will cover 100%
Thank you for making this video! but I think you went a bit too hard on those udemy courses xD. They're good especially if u get them at those discounts, they're super cheap and a lot better if you're someone whose more of a visual learner than a reader.
I disagree, it's just a medium. Not all are created equal. Just get it in you and apply. Find most are patient in learning anything. They want the quickest way to success or leveling up. Sum have poor communication skills.
The page I showed I found it on wiby.me Also I look into blogs of other people. Try to find official pages .. for example POSIX have doc about shell but u cant find it by googling. And I follow channels like hack+ On telegram also tons of groups .. About Linux distros .. irc. sub reddits. I believe start looking at random wiby.me websites. u ll end up finding gold.
So you say that people should read instead of watching tutorials but in video "why normies never learn" you said that watching tutorials from Corey Schafer is what you should be doing to increase your value. Where is that discrepancy coming from?
I was trying to say. you can learn something from video. but over time.. me and my friends (who are really good at programming) .. videos are very limited. you can't learn a lot or indepth. reading is ultimately what you have to do.
One of the things I love about the internet is that it's a bit like Alice in wonderland. One day you can find an old website with the most valuable information of your life just because of sheer luck, like finding rabbit holes.
My life time advise sir,
Thanks for share Your Experience (spending you precious time)❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
