No one and I mean no one can replace Ronnie and johnny knows that. I appreciate the younger brother keeping the music going. I also like his Christian songs he and brother Donnie are doing now. Really powerful.
I saw Johnny Van Zant Band in 1979 warming up for Molly Hatchet in Johnstown PA. Great concert. I've seen Johnny 4 times with Skynyrd. Why all the hate about them, I did not get to see the the originals, so for me seeing Gary, Leon, Billy and Ricky with Johnny was a thrill of a lifetime.
The hate towards Johnny is probably. misdirected grief what the haters fail to realize or acknowledge is the fact that Johnny would gladly step down to get his brother back also he originally turned down the gig to front Skynyrd his and Ronnie's daddy convinced him to do it to honor Ronnie is all Johnny intended to do and he refused to sing Freebird for a while and even now sometimes he only does part of the song and a recording of Ronnie finishes I believe also Ronnie's hat on the microphone as the song plays out is a beautiful tribute
Anyone that says Johnny can't sing is either deaf jealous or stupid it is a great tragedy his brother died and especially the way he did but Johnny loves his older brother Brickyard Road is a beautiful yet heartbreaking song you can feel his pain he was just a teenager when Ronnie was killed
Remember seeing Johnny and his band in Jax, Fla. It was hard trying to compete with his two brothers and their bands! Great times in the late ‘70’s in Jacksonville!!!

My dad owned a mobile home a few streets away. Imagine that, a trailer in Bithlo in the mid 70’s. One of my friends used to run his Ford Galaxie 500 on the oval track. That place was fun. All of the VZ brothers had great bands.
Johnny had the best voice of the 3 brothers. He was 3 years too late. The music biz/record execs put the knife through the heart of southern rock by this time. It was in its last death gasps.
Thanks for posting this! I vaguely remember this and looks like his old man as the judge. I do remember the video, Its you and I`m a fighter that got quite a bit of video play time.

What's great about music videos like this is there is the sexiness without the sleaziness, musicians don't have to degrade women and children to get attention for their music videos, don't have to be pornographic about their comments in reference to women when singing about passion. This video does allude sexiness because there's intelligence and questioning what should be questioned. Oh yeah, and the women in this video was wearing real clothes that were considered clothes.

@@bobibobik5903 I don't know the first thing about guitars. The guy playing guitar just resembled Allen Collins a bit. Anyway, Johnny's career as a solo artist was failing. Wow!😂. I am a MASSIVE Skynyrd fan and I’m not hating, but the distance between Johnny and Ronnie talent wise is measured in MILES. Come to think of it, that goes true for Donnie as well. Ronnie could walk across the stage and command attention without speaking a single word. Johnny would have been SO much better singing country. He’s just not tough enough for rock. Pop fans didn’t like his boring hookless songs and rock fans didn’t like his soft and weak lyrics. Most Skynyrd fans like country and there is very little competition compared to pop/rock.
This song was very popular where I lived. My band did it as a cover in the early '80s. Everyone loved it when they heard us playing it. Johnny was every bit as good as Ronnie in his own way. Apples and oranges. You're just a biased Ronnie fan.

JVZ's attempt at the Glam Rock genre. My favorite music style, wish he'd succeeded.
