This is so true, so I just moved last month after 8years of the taxes struggle now I regret it, I will be moving back to enjoy good roads, beautiful amenities and vicinities, ready to pay for them! You will always pay taxes in any state anyway. Virginia is the best!!!!

I moved to VA from FL and VA is definitely more expensive. Honestly, if you're used to an on the go life like I was in Orlando then VA might not be for you either. I actually plan on moving back to Orlando next year when my lease is up and I truly can't wait to get out of here.

A car tax? I hadn’t heard of that before. It makes sense in high urban areas like NYC. Might need to scale down to one if we end up in NoVa.

I would not move to Virginia! I moved here from Pennsylvania and I cannot believe the cost of just housing. Unbelievable!! You better have a good, solid job offer and a first class education. Otherwise. Don't move to Virginia! That's my advice. And the personal property taxes! You buy a new vehicle, pay out the nose! . All.this and it's way too hot in July and August, you can't go outside. Not very amenable to raising children!!!
This is why it’s important to research where ur moving to. While the state is expensive. Not all cities are.

I only laugh bc compared to being born and raised in san diego, looking for another state to move to (you have to make $112,000 to rent comfortably here atm, report just came out last week). Northern VA is basically California and New York with almost no Virginia natives there. You're similarly starting to see an exodus from north va just like Ny or CA because of the horrifying level of taxes there.

Car Tax alone is a reason not to move there, that's what voting blue does for you. Thanks for the info on the car tax, I almost made a big mistake moving there.

Come to Florida where the entire state legislature is republican and people are losing their property cause they can't afford homeowners insurance... Homeowners insurance is literally doubling people ls mortgages but they have more important things to do like losing fights with Disney

Virginia is over rated and over PRICED. They tax you on everything. Restaurants taxes , grocery taxes,car taxes , gasoline taxes. Property taxes. I live there I know. That's why I moved away from away from Virginia. They should change Virginia state name to state of taxes. That's my opinion. Please let me know what you think. Have a nice day. 👏🏼👍

Would never live in Northern VA. Nightmare epitomizing the whole region: Outside dystopian Crystal City on a cold, overcast November dusk, clad in an obligatory Burberry trench coat, awaiting a Metro bus. Horribile dictu!
What a joke about Virginia Beach: trashy t-shirt and souvenir shops; impossible to find parking that is expensive; big motels that block the view of the ocean and lots of summer crime. Lets not forget tons of strip malls and 7-11.

I'm in the county of Northumberland virginia in the east coast rural aira taxes are low here I only pay for estate tax $600.00 a year for a 110 acras of land open and timber land.

Lifelong Virginia resident here. It's called a personal property tax; not a car tax. If you own any of these you will get a tax bill: car, truck, suv, motorcycle, rv, mobile home, house, boat, and some others that I don't recall right now.

Every state gets their money by taxes. The politicians/government will always make sure they get your money (one way or another).
Is this different than registration tax? I live in Texas and we pay registration taxes and tag taxes every year. 🤷🏻♀️
Other states do just fine without taxing your “personal” property.
You say that like it's better lol. I own some of those things and they're depreciating assets. Insane that they would be taxed every year for my mere ownership. I pay a tax to buy them. I pay a tax on the income to buy them. Taxing ownership is painful.

Here's my take on Virginia: beautiful mountains and scenery. Only problem is the people are very unfriendly. Only people I have met with any character are from out of state. Culture seems very drab and synthetic.

Hi, local here. The general area you are speaking of, Hampton Roads, is very diverse in food, people, lifestyles, jobs, and education. If you are looking for the big city vibe, Norfolk is your best bet. Suburban/Exurban living, e.g., settling down with a family, then Suffolk and Chesapeake are what you are looking for.
VA Beach is like the jack of all trades of Hampton Roads though a bit more expensive. This is just the Southside of Hampton Roads. Across the James River, there is Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, York County, and Jame City County.

Very black people friendly. It is so diverse here that the color of your skin is not really an issue. Speaking from the northern Virginia experiences.

A long-time friend of mine was staying there temporarily and when i told her it was my dream destination to retire, she told me I would need to curb my enthusiasm (code for shut up) on equal rights. My heart still won't be still until I find out for myself. I plan on checking things out there in October. Thanks again, Sir. If you can suggest some areas that are "jazzy seniors friendly', I'd appreciate that too. I want to be able to walk to the grocery store, maintenance-free, quiet (but not dead i.e., I love the sound of families familizin') and affordable, of course. I bought the same house 20 years ago for $80K (Chicagoland) that are now $300K. In my mind that's ridiculous. Thanks again!!!
Black man here from NOVA... The area is black friendly... Most of the land (developed and undeveloped) here was and is black owned... Gainesville is a suburb of DC and has a huge black successful population... There is no gentrification here just a lot of undeveloped land that started to get destroyed after 911... The reason why so many blacks sold land Was because they're children didn't want to keep up with the land after they're parents retirement so the all sold and moved deeper in Va or moved to SC/NC...

Were moving from across the border in nc. Weve found a few nice houses for sale in portsmouth. Theyre in good areas. My biggest worry there is schooling for our 9yo daughter. We may see about private school but were just middle class chumps lol. Growing up on the outer banks I've spent a lot of yime in va. Ive wanted to move there for years.
