Thanks a bunch youtube.com/@JSSBrooklyn, I'm really glad you liked it! Rest assured, there is much more awesome stuff planned and on the way, so hang tight!
I had 2000AD from issue 1 through to 98 (I think it was) with all free 'gifts' still in the covers Went off to wander around Europe for a few months in 84 and saw the prices of comics, so when I got home I found all of them missing, turns out my mother had given them away to her friends kids. I wasn't at all pleased. Other lost comics were Battle from 1 to over 100 UK Marvel from 3 to over 100 UK Spiderman, Avengers from 1 to at least 50 Plus anything else released in the UK during the 70s
Oh dear Rob youtube.com/@RobCrawford23, sorry to hear that such a great UK collection disappeared. I'm slowly trying amass these same books again, so stay tuned to future videos and maybe you'll be able to bring back some those treasured memories of those titles.
It was never banned; the publisher withdrew it from distribution after General Mills (owners of Green Giant) threatened legal action. McDonalds never made a complaint.
I really don't care for slabbed comics as I collect comics to read and not for profit, but whatever floats your boat. I'm lucky enough to own all of the comics featured and I also have the first appearance of Judge Dredd in issue 2 and issue 5 (the first Dredd cover) signed by his creator John Wagner. I grew up reading 2000ad and the british incarnations of Star Lord and Action comics (both completely unrelated to their american namesakes). Affordable and mass produced comics with generally outstanding content, unfortunately though, the UK comics scene is virtually dead these days, with the majority of shelf space taken up by Marvel and DC reprints. Cheers for the video anyway, David and Congratulations on 1000 subscribers!!
Many thanks youtube.com/@8bitsnkboy472, appreciate the support and congrats on the 1K subs. I really do understand peoples perspectives on slabbed comics and totally get it! Slabbed comics can be like putting your favorite sandwich in a glass case-great for showing off, but not so tasty when you're hungry for a good read! I try to have one high grade book slabbed and also have the RAW comic for reading as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on those awesome UK comics that we both grew up with! It's awesome to hear about your collection and your passion for reading comics, they are relatively unknown in the US and hopefully I can help share the history about what made them so special!
Well done on reaching 1000 subscribers David, well deserved. Didn't you say in an earlier video that the giveaway when you got to 1000 would be that Marvel backpack and a bundle of comics to go in it? Excellent grades on your 2000ADs, a real achievement considering their age and the fact that, unlike US comics, they have no glossy and slightly thicker cover to take some of the knocks and bumps that are an inevitable part of kids handling them. Prog 72's cover is one of my favourites.
Thanks so much Charlie youtube.com/@charliedogg7683, I'm so grateful for everyone who has been on the journey so far. Yes, I am giving away that backpack and a selection of books to one lucky subscriber soon and I'll sahre more details on this weeks Merry Monday MailCall Show. Glad you enjoyed the 2000AD's and Dredd early keys, and yes, so happy with those grades considering how more fragile they are and how they were handled by most readers.
Hi David . Enjoyed the video. Just an FYI I have had some UK weeklies back from CGC that got a blue lable even with the newsagents notes in pen on the cover and that werent downgraded because of this . Seems like CGC are finally listening to us ! 🙂
Thanks for the comment Richard youtube.com/@richardwaddington. On your recent submission, in my experience CGC have been recognising newsagent notes for a while now on UK comics. I even spoke to Matt Nelson on this point and he confirmed that the highest grade that you'll ever get with those on it will be a 9.6. Any 9.8 has to be devoid of those.
@@StillOnly35c Hi Thanks for the info , That is disappointing , it also may go to explain why they still wont budge on the tape used to attach free gifts being a publishers issue rather than a quality issue . But Ill keep nagging them . Many thanks for your feedback and keep up the great channel .
ive got thousands of british and american comics from the 1870's to date and am well positioned to judge the best comic of all time. it's 2000AD of course. Very nice slabbed copies you have there. Many thanks
Wow, that's an impressive collection Rachel youtube.com/@rachelcobley9158! It's always exciting to see how comics have evolved over the years, agree that 2000AD is definitely a classic!
I'm glad you enjoyed the walk down memory lane youtube.com/@chrissandoval7675! Dredd has such a rich legacy and I share your excitement for the Mega City One series, fingers crossed they do a great job and it lives up to our expectations!
Thanks for watching youtube.com/@rudilator2178; pronunciation can be tricky sometimes, but it's all part of my messed up accent//education. If you like this, you should see how I pronounce Wolverine.
Thanks Adam youtube.com/@adamtaylor5749, that's awesome! These classic 2000ADs have such a rich history, so it's great to see you got and are holding onto these since they were new on the newsagent stand!
I subbed simply because you covering my boy Dredd. I've read EVERYTHING more than 2000 times 😂 2000ad is genuinely The Galaxies Greatest. 8yr old me discovered Dredd and it felt like I was reading something for adults, the spandex books always been secondary to British Sci Fi. R.I.P to Carlos btw , I miss him more than I thought I would. The G.O.A.T Dredd artist! Luckily we've got Henry Flint now. Pride of my comic collection and the Megazine ✌️ Oh and the U.K transformers ... Cover those next please 🙏
I'm glad to hear you're a fellow Dredd fan and thanks for the sub youtube.com/@horrorstew3577! 2000 AD truly holds a real special place for many of us and it's so great to see how it impacted comic books in both the UK and US. I'll definitely have some more UK comic videos coming and will certainly consider covering Transformers next!
The stories that were originally banned, had the bans removed to the change in UK parody laws and they were reprinted in the cursed earth uncensored. Using the banned word is wrong as the world had as moved on
Thanks Ian youtube.com/@ianfleetwood8804. It's certainly interesting how laws and societal norms evolve over time and the change in parody laws really reflects a shift in our understanding and acceptance of creative expression! That said, these stories were originally banned and out of publication for well over 35 years, so yes, they were banned stories especially as they are only available in one reprint omnibus, which I mention in the video.
The stories were never "banned", they just weren't reprinted. You also don't seem to know how to pronounce several creators names, Dan Dare's creator was Frank Hampson, not Frank Hobson, T.B. Grover was a pseudonym, not a real person, the first published Dredd story was not drawn by Carlos Ezquerra...did you even read 2000AD in the seventies?
I respect and appreciate your perspective @@tonyingram1337 . These stories are known as banned stories and CGC even notates the same on the label for these books. On the mispronunciation, it happens to all of us at times and I've commented, corrected and added links where I can. I'm also still discovering new facts, like the fact that John Wagner sometimes wrote stories under a pseudonym such as the aforementioned T.B. Grover. Both Carlos Esquerra and Mike McMahon contributed to Prog 2 art (Carlos' image featured on the first page whilst Mike completed the art duties for the rest of the story - as mentioned, neither were credited in that first story. I did read 2000AD in the 70's and 80s along with other IPC comics including Scream hence why I'm collecting them all over again to enjoy and share with others.
Good evening David. Again congratulations on the 1000 subs, a great show again today, and well done with your encapsulating grades, They look pretty flash. Might need another comics room to display them Cheers Al The Goldkeyfourcolorkidownunda
Thanks a ton Alan youtube.com/@alancarr7718, glad you liked the show! A second comics room would be awesome, but if anything I'll be looking at a larger room, so I can display more art.
Thanks for pointing that out youtube.com/@bentilley5412, you are spot on, Frank Hampson. Sadly, I fluffed that and missed that in the editing! I've updated with a link to Dan Dare's Wikipedia page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Dare.

Yep youtube.com/@ULYSSES-31, basically, it wasn't a ban; it was more of a "let's avoid a veggie-related courtroom drama" situation!

Great vid but I'm a bit puzzled as I pronounce McMahon as McMarn and Bolland with a Boll rather than a Bowl.
In Ireland that name has three syllables. Mac Ma Han
@@jimbomacroth3400 So it's deffo not pronounced 'Mahone' then.
@@rudilator2178 I would guess it depends on what part of Britian or Ireland you are in
