Banning leg attacks in Judo is tragic and suspiciously arrived after the success of Mongolian and Russians styles!! Why not simply create different divisions like Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling? Only add never take away. Over the years Judo has become ridiculously specific with far less crossover potential... it feels like one day they'll sew the jackets together, only allowed two or three different throws and ban you for life if you compete in any other sport!!!

I practiced Judo for years, from 19 to 32 years old. On that time, several techniques, like the ones applied grabbing the legs were allowed. I stopped the practice because with every rules modification, the olympic judo became more and more ineffective as a martial art. So i switched to Jiu Jitusu after been soundly defeated in a friendly bout (I have several regional and one national medal in judo from that years) by a Jiu Jitsian who still is my master and best friend. Both are the same martial art, but olympic Judo is becoming more and more a shadow of what Jigoro Kano, Mifune, Kimura and the other great masters developed. A Judoka friend and i were even scolded by a master for asking for the practice of Atemi Waza on one ocassion, and my friend just showed him the Kodokan Book , were you can find an entire chapter that is practiced no more because "that´s not sport".

I am aware (and much curious about it) that there is a sort of "Judo Rescue Project" initiative ongoing in Japan, led by no other than Yasuhiro Yamashita, current Kodokan Guardian and All-Japan Judo Association president, accompanied by great names such as Kosei Inoue and Keiji Suzuki; they are visiting schools in Japan and bringing back traditional and healthy customs on Judo training and learning, bringing back some of the philosophy as well. And I say this initiative has many more enthusiasts in other countries, who understand that modern competitive professional Judo is going in a different direction from what Kano Shihan intended (as said by himself soon before his death). Judo should go back to be a martial art, in the first place, so people can learn, train and practice it entirely, including all of the techniques, and also have a competitive aspect. But Judo has been taught and practiced only for competition, and this is the real problem.

Thanks the Olympic for that. To me, though an amazing marketing tool it is, Olympic watered down martial arts. Your Olympic gold medal doesn't mean sh*t in professional boxing, and only a very few selected gold medalists ever got their hands on the champion belt.
And look at what Judo and Taekwondo has become after being regular Olympic sports? The rules were watered down to be more eye-catching. It's harder to see in Judo, but today Taekwondo athletes don't kick any more, instead they slapped each other with their feet to score points, and apparently you can't catch someone's leg when they're kicking you. Hell, they even abandon techniques because some certain techniques are easier to score points on certain types of electric armor.
Karate also suffered the same fate. It has not been in Olympic yet because Olympic Tokyo was postponed, but in its path to be accepted to the Olympic, Karate is moving towards Taekwondo's direction, many techniques are banned because they look too "violent", and techniques that are only useful in some very rare specific cases are spammed for points.

I started judo in 1976, when standing arm locks and standing strangle holds were still allowed, along with throws like kani hasami and moroti gari. It made a passive approach unattractive which made for dynamic bouts. Jigoro Kano originally never envisaged shiai to be part of judo, and the beauty of randori is, that no-one ever wins or loses, freeing you of all constraints. The way shiai is set up, taking risks isn't rewarded. The way Shuaijiao bouts are set up are much more conducive to high risk/high reward techniques. A single ippon hardly ever ends a Shuaijiao bout, and consequently you see a lot more of them. A popular Shuaijiao saying is that boxers hit with their hands, but wrestlers hit with the entire earth. Also, there is a lot more room for fighting for kumi kata, which increases the chance of good throw, as opposed to being coerced into making an attempt to avoid shido. Long story short: with Chadi on bringing back these techniques (and possible others). Keep up the good work, and thanks for all the work that goes into this!

I've been complaining for many years about the way Judo is being watered down. I really believe that they will soon go beyond yuko and koka and start awarding points if you make your opponent blink. Judoka no longer have that burning desire to score ippon. They are satisfied if they win a decision on less than waza ari. You can no longer grab a leg. I don't give a crap if you grab his toenail. If you make the throw you get the ippon.

    • @BURGAWMMA

No matter what they try to force it'll always be easier to stall until golden score and then get a minor score win... the criteria for ippon is just too demanding and should be what it always was before...a one punch knockout way to win a match regardless of the score

I think that even more problematic is how current scoring roles are setup in the first place.
They are all about the uke fall with no regard to how tori is positioned in the end of the throw.
This makes throws like ku ochi makikomi an effective technique in judo while they are a very bed idea in self defense and any role set in which the fight will continue on the ground, or the common finish to a lot of hip throws in which uke is on his back and tori is on top of uke but also on his back

Sukui nage (in its old form) is a technique which is practical in both grappling and striking . It just shows how dumb and artificial it is to ignore half the human body.
Historically, you find it in judo but also karate. It is a bread&butter sweep/throw in Yoseikan Budo which comes from both. And Lyoto Machida has proved its worth extensively in MMA.

Allowing leg locks also prevents stalling by giving the guy in the turtle an offensive option apart from sweeping.
As a guy who’s been saved by Te Guruma (in BJJ) many times: Apart from making leg grips immediate, make a rule that they can be used to finish a failed technique (failed seoi nage to leg grip kata guruma), or for defense (using a single leg vs uchi mata)

Excellent point, Chadi, this subject deserves to be discussed more thoroughly among Judo community. I have competed in Judo when leg brags were legal, and saw all the changes in the rules from that time. In my humble opinion, also as a referee myself, a big problem was the excessive tolerance from referees regarding bad posture and poor, savage techniques. Especially among the lighter weights... sometimes the combat turned into a mess of arms and legs flipping around, until they were on the mat staring at the referee's waiting for some score (and their coaches shouting for it)... it was ridiculous, a real lottery! So many times I gave Shido for bad posture and lack of combativity, and my peers cancelled it. Anyway, in my opinion this tolerance was wrong, and shamefully became a tendency which helped to ruin good Judo in competition. Poor techniques would not be scored, bad posture and stalling should be punished by shido both in tachi and be waza (turtle position, for example), and kuzure kumi kata should be punished with shido if done for too much time (kumi kata exists for a reason, so if you are doing a variation, it must be for instant attack). In addition, I vote for returning not only leg grabs, but also leg and foot locks, and all of the traditional Judo and Ju Jitsu (distinct from modern Jiu Jitsu, but with the same origin) techniques. Exceptions should be made regarding really proven dangerous techniques such as kawasu-gake and perhaps the straight leg bar, and techniques should be allowed according to ranking (like side-tsurikomi-goshi is forbidden below the green belt, if I'm not mistaken). Sorry for the long post.

Well indeed stuff must come back, I agree to obi otoshi and obi tori gaeshi but I also want all the leg grab techniques to come back, kata guruma, sukui nage, morote gari, kibisu gaeshi, kuchiki daoshi, te guruma, I don't agree that it will look a bit more like wrestling it wasn't looking like wrestling when those were used it will change the game dramatically for the self defence aspect, wasari sould be given if you take your opponent down with the back and if you just dropped him sideways you sould just continue to newaza , no guard pulling for the love of God, you know if the guard is used more, then leg locks sould be a counter to that , the only problem is that if you break the ankle one time then the problem remains and it breaks easier, the knee bar is extremely dangerous because you don't feel pain until it's too late , we don't even talk about ashi garami Ofc it was from the first things that gone out, calf locks are a bit less dangerous but only if there is no body weight involved so I am up for that. Gerbi choke sould be back again I really don't see the point of removing it from the begining, also I don't see the point of awarding ippon when someone does a sutemi waza and drops down while any leg entanglement from the opponent because the sutemi user dropped first , in that case I believe that the man who has control after the move sould take wasari for that, its unrealistic to control someone fully with the sutemi and because the other guy touched your foot to take an ippon or wasari . Ippon must remain like this the perfect technique , perfect control dropping the opponent with the back or head. I don't want body locks and guillotine drops those stuff are really for wrestling. That's it anything else is only for self defence and sould be given some attention from judo schools.

Thanks for another great video! A reflection on IJF wanting to distance judo from wrestling by banning techniques where the legs are grabbed ex. morote gari. There are several techniques that exist in both wrestling and judo such as ippon seoi nage, ura nage, ogoshi deashi harai just to mention a few. (and several others that you pointed out in your videos about wrestling and judo) Why do IJF just choose to bann techniques where the legs are grabbed to distance judo from wrestling?
To me, it sounds more like an excuse to change judo in a direction that benefits and creates benefits for countries whose judo is less freestylewrestling-based.
Not to mention the undoubtedly major disadvantages for judo as self-defense when those techniques are banned.
    Sorry for the long post.

One of the main reasons was, that many fighters just grabbed the leg and started to run until they got a score. That looked like shit and the IJF wanted to force judo in a more technically way. In the first few years it was ok to grab the leg in a combination or as counter. But often that wasnt clear enough to decide was it a combination or not. So they decided to bann leg grabbing. If you really want to learn judo for self defence, you should start Jiu-jitsu, or practice techniques for higher Dan-grades.

Travis Stevens has interesting thoughts on the leg grabbing issue. Leg grab attacks that don’t score points but lead to newaza fighting.

My proposal for a leg grab change would be to make it so that you can only grab one leg with one hand at a time. That way you're still reducing the risk of judo matches devolving into bad wrestling matches by eliminating things like double legs and single legs (since hoisting a leg up with only one arm is extremely difficult), while retaining most other traditional judo throws that involved a leg grab.
If you wanna take it a step further you could also make it so tori's knees can't touch the floor before a leg grab, to stop people from shooting on the legs sloppily to stall for time.

    • @Chadi
      @Chadi  4 года назад

That would bring back Te guruma/kata guruma and sukui nage as a kaeshi waza and kibisu gaeshi which is not bad at all

Agreed. I enjoy your videos showing historical content. I consider the 'turtle' position as one of the very dangerous and weak positions and has no place in Self Defense other than to transition immediately to another position via rolling etc. . The issue is that some may assume this position from sport side and they actually are doing harm to themselves. I have actually witnessed from my vehicle a young man be murdered by several others when he stopped and turn to fight instead of running away he had sufficient lead to get to safety. I watched in dismay while he tried to engage one of his opponents perhaps pride got into him, (!) he took his shirt off to show off a muscular v shape body yet the others came at him, he was hit he fell and was kept by one other in the turtle position he was held now from the front over the head and being choked any thug can grab for a choke ....while the others now kicked his sides breaking ribs etc.probably knifing to the point that he collapsed on the dirt where they continued to finish him off. Within seconds he was dead and they I gathered at least five assailants were gone. It made the news as another few minutes story in Miami. I would like to see more of effective instantaneous transitioning from the turtle position to other positions implemented. Also transitioning from one to two three or more opponents from one technique to another from block to atemi waza to ippon to ne waza and then back up standing in succession. This is what I teach and advocate to my kohai's. I advocate and teach the principle of 'discrete continua' as in mathematics or in simple terms beads on a string....where continuity can be irepresented by an infinite flow Aiki(do) function yet the discrete continua are individually each one of infinitesimal value and in succession. The path vector filed is easily understood by Green's/Kelvin Stokes theorem

I feel Judo should do a similar form of randori competition, allowing open hands to the face/head and knuckles to the torso, forcing Judoka to develop more respect for threat of strikes to make Judo training more conducive to self defense while minimizing injury. Problem with Sukui nage is that most people who execute that technique usually lift with their back which can cause back strains which will also make the technique less effective. It got banned in 2010 because of that reason. Also the major problem with obi Tori gaeishi is when you fall you have to catch yourself or you will faceplant the mat. If you don't catch yourself, it will cause head or spinal injuries. I also wonder if you have any opinion regarding the boring struggle for Kumi Kata, which eats up the time from most of competitions. Competitors look like slapping each other, it's so pathetic. I also consider there's been an abuse of the use of the gi. What I mean is, many competitors will try to trap the opponent on his/her own gi and will throw them just because they have no way out, they've been caught on their own clothes so their only option is to fall to the ground. That's why you see so many horrible ippons, the opponent not really hitting the ground but just rolling on his back from being trapped. This makes the judo style of the IJF look weak. You can compare that to the All Japan competitions and you will see how much more solid and tough their judo is, they're not struggling for the kumi kata and their throws are solid straight to the ground.

Obi-tori-gaeshi looks like it would easily turn into a DDT if the uke struggles-- idk when I think 'is this dangerous' I think if they did it sloppy. -- IRT the turtle, I feel the guard is way more vulnerable then the turtle. If I am in your gaurd I have disabled two of your weapons and you cannot stand easily. You also have produced some vital points super clearly. Ban guard before turtle. From a turtle conversely I have my weapons and I can stand up directly. I see a clear difference between the guard and turtle.-- it usually takes an opponents full effort to restrain me In turtle where you can immobilize an opponent just by being in their gaurd.-- also the turtle occurs often in untrained fights so training with it makes some sense.-- I like some of those techniques though. Let locks I am not certain because the simplest escape is usually a kick.
