Folding instead of rolling to reduce drag; freaking brilliant and simple.
I camped less than 10 feet away from a fire ant’s nest a month ago. They weren’t out when I set up but they came out at night, so I put a Twinkie on the other side of the nest to keep them busy all night and not bother with me. Worked like a charm.
with all those trees around, a bit of shock cord and a 3x3 tarp over the swag would be good for rainy conditions, also keeps the swag cool in the sun, compact too.
those glow in the dark zipper attachments are a marvellous idea I've experienced the struggle of trying to get out of swag in a hurry when drunk and those zipper attachment would've been nice.

Yep top tips. I like the pole repair and folding of swag tips.
I always use a stretcher as it keeps you off the cold ground and away from insects, plus you can put boots under the bed.
And if you throw a tarp over the stretcher, it makes instant skirting for dead-air space underneath, in the cold. I camped in a snowstorm with an ancient canvas bag as a pad on top of a stretcher (free hand-me-down), and a $20, 40-degree (Fahrenheit) bag on top. Sandwiched the stack inside a folded blue plastic tarp ($5) and slept like a baby. My fellow hunter spent a miserable night hunched over the fire. Same spot he was in when I went to sleep. I wanted to go exploring. He wanted to get in the truck and warm up on the way home.
Basic tarp's never let me down in the cold, but it does nothing to keep biting insects off you. The stretcher makes all the difference in the world, when you get older, not just because it's softer and perfectly flat, but because it's easier to get up from than the ground, which I never noticed until I was mid-40s, except for a couple bad-hangover mornings in my youth. Bad-hangover mornings, now, and I look like a giraffe trying to get myself upright.

I carry a small dome tent for overnight. More than that i errect a proper tent. It improves the experience so much. Turns it from a place to sleep to a camp.

Tent tip: If you hate tent pegs and have a drill handy. You can drill in M10x150mm coach screws from bunnings ($1.60 each)
These will dig into ANY ground and it will not move. My tent has survived 3 storms held down by these screws.
Washers and bigger M12 x 200mm screw also available.
have you guys ever tried using hammocks on these types of trips? you could hang them between two truck bumpers or between your truck and a tree or whatever, I've found that they have really helped my back and are super comfy no matter what the terrain looks like, and they are also super easy to setup and take down
I use those blue foam squares that lock together that people use to make a tent floor with. Mine have holes that allow water to go through but are thick enough to hold you off damp soil. Also makes gravel more comfy and improves warmth. a 4x2 pattern fits my swag perfect.

very good info fellas loved the tips .one point which is cheap is to get some shade cloth from bunnings or there abouts and cut a bit extra for the under swags folds away to nothing and the sand just falls away

Another great Vid Ronny. Just wanted to add a tip, I added a silver emergency sheet/blanket inside my swag but under my swag mattress. Stops the cold coming up and going through your swag from the ground. Alex has the right idea, I also just updated to a Bunker Xl by Oztent. I cant wait to test it out.

Regarding tent pegs: I'm old enough to remember when the plastic ones came out, as you say Down Under, they are rubbish! Ditto for the steel wire ones you got with your tent, as well as the folded sheet metal ones. So what does one Do? I have gone to 10" galvanized spikes, like giant nails. Super tough, take a LONG time to corrode, hold extremely well, and available at your hardware store. To pull them, I ground a semicircular notch in the blade of my pick-mattock (always carry pioneering tools!) and simply step on the pick end as you pull the handle, works like a giant claw hammer for those giant nails!

Don't forget to unpack and setup your gear in your back yard after a camping trip, you get to clean everything and also allows gear to dry out if it got wet on the camp.
It's also good to repack everything and tag it when you repacked it and make a list of what's in different bags etc.
You can even keep this gear handy in case of when SHTF, you can use your gear as a bug out kit. If your evacuated to an evacuation centre a good free standing swag gives you added privacy and you feel at home until the emergency passes.
A tip if you break one of your swag or tent poles. ..
Cut a 15-20 cm piece off an old gardening hose. If
your pole breaks, poke it through the hose and then wrap gaffer/duct tape
around the ends.

Thanks for the tips, I have been using a SWAG for few months now and find it to be very handy little tent, not too many manufactures that make them here in US though.

Mate good video, felt like I was in the bush too.
For a pole repair if the pole has a lot of damage I've found bending a tent peg to the required angle and cable tying this across the damaged area works well, especially when the pole is damaged or snapped in the middle of the segment not at a join. Like when your mate doesn't see the bag with the swag (bivvy) packed away in it and drives a 3500kg defender 130 over it.

Loved the video mate! Just a suggestion. Could you make a video comparing aluminium/steel trays and tubs on dual cab utes and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both. I literally can't find anything out there on this, and your video would help me and others decide what the best setup would be for their 4x4/camping needs, especially those who are new to it like me. I use an old school 9 foot x 9 foot canvas single pole tent. takes about 3 minutes to put up and works great for me and the misses. You can stand up to get changed. So much better than a swag.
In the states those boots are only worn by women.....love your channel tons of info. Seems like all you guys do is explore and camp!
I think for roof aerodynamics you need something smooth to cover all the bends and creases....basically a smooth surface for wind to pass on...try using your tent floor matt and tie it over the roof rack entirely

To help prevent water from running or dripping under your tent's floor, how effective is it to tuck the exposed edges of the ground sheet under the tent? I can foresee water collecting between the ground sheet and the tent floor, when it rains.
l'll try using 2 ground sheets. One as the base w/ the edges exposed to walk on, etc. The other laid on top of the base sheet but edges tucked under the tent ...using a thicker tarp so the edges stay roundish to make it harder for water to trickle on top of.

an good upgrade to the glow in the dark zip tag is a GTLS kit marker. once you try them out you will not want to be without them
One thing i do is with the bag the swag goes in i put that just out the front of the swap so its a matt sort of thing and i will put my shoes in the bag then zip it up to stop thing getting into my shoes

Good tips , Gaffer / Duct tape , zip ties and paracord should be in every vehicle , Dry Bags in various sizes , toughness and price are available from Canoe shops etc . They are tougher than a plastic rubbish bag and seemingly last for years ,use different colours for different things , you can cram you sleeping bag in one , roll up the neck and it will never get wet , from rain , fuel spills etc . I even use one for carrying game meat , no blood all over the vehicle or helicopter !
Goot tips! I was surprised to see the tarps under the swags with all the rain you get, because if they stick out they'll sheet the water underneath and soak you from below. Make that mistake once. But that permeable material looks awesome. Where do you get it?

+Gizzard Stone the ground sheets can be found at most camping shops but the Cgear (helipad mesh) I had to get online as I couldn't find any shops that sold it.
Aren't they mesh tarps under the swags?
Just curious, whilst it is a nice idea to sleep in a natural material like canvas, why have a canvas tent/swag as you call it if you don't want to get it wet? I thought the idea behind a tent is to keep you dry and comfortable... Plus they potentially go mouldy quicker than a synthetic tent?

im not sure im the only one who does this (qld so i do it to stay away from crocs) but have you ever set up in the canopy? and would it be any better then being on the ground with the tarp for w.a
+saph I know a handful of people that sleep in the canopy/ute tray. It's a good easy way and if I didn't have to carry all this camera gear around I would be doing the same I reckon. If I was in croc country I'd be sleeping on my roof or in the cab.

hi Sovereign Aussie, I have a 79 series fitted out with all the 4x4 mods and have a roof rack with light bar , my economy did not really change with the rack and second spare wheel and Maxtax loaded on top , just try to keep the load on the roof low as possible. Cheers Rolly

7:35 I have also used heavy duty Raychem electrical heatshrink with glue to repair them BUT, you need a good source of heat (gas torch or stove) and you cant fold them back up after wards, but will get you though a trip at least...
Why do 4wders tend to favour heavy canvas tents/swags over the lighter nylon/polyester/gortex offerings used by hikers etc?

No, we call them tents in Australia too. A swag is a specific sort of tent that rolls up easily. They are generally for one person only, although you can get them in a double size. They usually come with the mattress built in.
The major difference is that a swag contains your bedding, whereas tents have the bedding removed when they are packed away. It's essentially a fancy bedroll.

...camps in a stupidly heavy tent with no space. Covers it with a tarp from the hardware store to keep it dry even though it's tent... which is supposed to keep you dry... because that's what tents are for. I love Australia, but man y'all don't make sense to me sometimes. :D
A swag is a stupid tent, I have a one person, two layer tent. Can sit in it, can store my boots dry and it is just a bit bigger then a swag. And it is probably lighter
