My agency issued the Mini-14 as a patrol rifle for about 30 years. They were fine. We replaced them with AR15s about 10 years ago and people like them better. Good video, more please!
Congratulations on the birth of your baby! Excellent presentation of this great American rifle. Sorry to hear the additional troubles the good people of Washington have to put up with in regards to firearm freedoms. All the best to you and your family this holiday season! God bless!
I've wanted one of those for 40 years. When I had the opportunity to go out on patrol with the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Derry, one of the long guns they carried were Mini-14s.
So nice to find firearms content from other Asians. I just moved to Washington this year and may have to pick one of these up myself as my first rifle. Thanks for the video!
I have a 582 series Ranch model, love it! I especially love putting it into the hands of all my AR buddies. Anything out to about 200 yards (66 year old eyes) they can do with their LPVO's or Red Dots I can do with the open sights. And when they put it into their hands, most are pleasantly surprised as to what they can with it! Keep on keepin on girl! Living my best La Vida Loca out here in southeastern Arizona
@@ffarmchicken The Mini 14 was obviously derived from the M14 & the thinking was to submit a 5.56mm rifle to troops used to the M1 Garand/M14 manual of arms but in the smaller caliber. It took some work to get the gas system to work right which is why the design was dropped from Army consideration.
@@ffarmchicken I will always find it odd how ol' Billy wasn't scared of those "evil assault rifles" for the first 40 years of his company until he lost his mind in 1989 and stabbed us all in the back.
I love the Min-14's. I had to qualify with them every year when I was working for WI Dept. Of Corrections, and I even used one in the 2001 Milwaukee A.S.P- advanced SWAT tactics training seminar. The range was a treat every year, and since I was a squad leader in our ERU (special teams), i was accustomed to additional range time. The rifle isn't light, but the weight isn't discernible when you're firing it, and may even account for some decrease in muzzle rise. It was easy for us to train "pre-service employees" in it's use because it looked familiar to a majority of them, or they had seen them used before. If I was in a situation where I would need a rifle to survive, I'd hope for a mini-14 to be available.
Good video!! Unfortunately, here in Washington State, this model of the Ruger Mini-14 is ONE of the very few “semi-modern” semi-automatic rifles/carbines we can now purchase. The Ruger 9mm PC standard carbine is another of the few semi-automatic long arms we can now purchase. The good thing about the Ruger PC carbine is that it has the replaceable Glock magazines well, so you can use your grandfathered 11+ Glock magazines you may already own.
I just found out Mini 14's are legal in WA state myself. Thought anything semi-auto mag fed was banned for sale. You can buy them in 300 blackout and 7.62x39 as well. Problem is, people are pressuring stores not to sell 5.56, 300BO, and 7.62x39 since these are super duper scaries ammo.
Great review glad to see you back, I was wondering where you went. Congratulations on the little one. The Mini 14, people either love them or they hate them. I have a tactical model that I changed over to a very nice aftermarket wooden stock that I re finished myself. Also lapped in the trigger, buttery smooth now, I really love this platform.
Always nice to new people get involved in semi rifle shooting. I do suggest that Ruger designed the Mini 14 from the US RIFLE M14 that was in a larger caliber. That rifle was derived from the M1. Hopefully, the Bruen case will eventually allow us our firearms rights per the 2A so you can use full magazines without restrictions.
The barrel strut definitely changes the look of the rifle. It does make it look more like an M-14/M1A. It up's the cool factor. I have a 581 and a 584 both in 18 inch and I put the struts on both of them.
My most recent Mini 14 is in the wind having been stolen but it wears a Ghillie Green Hogue stock & factory sights under the scope rail. Choate Machine & Tool is located in Bald Knob Ark,just 68 miles NE of Little Rock & about 70 miles west of Memphis on HWY 64. I've been ordering stuff from them for rifles & shotguns since the catalog order days where you sent your money in,waited a week or two for it to get there & another 2-3 weeks for delivery.
At first glance, I thought the rifle was some goofy parts M1A that had been left out in the ran. What a relief it is a Mini. Mine is from last century and has been modified. Please keep us posted with the results of your shooting expeditions, young lady. Thanks for the video.
I had a mini 14 over 35 years ago. I could not get that thing to group no matter what I did. 3 inch groups at 100 yards. Went to my favorite gunsmith gun shop and traded it for a M1 garand. That rifle shot really good after a little accurizing work. I could shoot 3/4 inch groups with the peep sights at 100 yards. Long before my cataract surgery lol.
Gunblue 490 has a really good tutorial on working the trigger. along with Tech Sight and run of the mill ammo, I get two-inch groups and hit coyotes on the run at 200, no problem.
nice!!! i have the same series mini, but i didn't buy the strut because the tapered barrel eliminates the need for it unless you're really reaching out with it. buying the adjustable gas block is a great idea. mine was flinging brass into the next county until i bought the adjustable gas block. the folks at accuracy systems make great stuff. i bought a thumbhole stock from them also, and i love it
In 1982 I went to buy a Ruger Mini-14. When I got to the gun shop they had the Colt AR-15 SP1 on sale for $325 I couldn't pass up the price, two weeks later I went back and purchased the Mini-14 still own both, both fantastic sporting rifles.

I had all four riflers in this action M1A1 Springfield , M-1 carbine, M-1Grand and Ruger Mini-14 back in the 90s. Both has its down fall for a left handed shooter wearing a baseball cap. I had hot brass ejection up hitting the brim of my cap and down in my face. I switched to the AR-15 and AKM platform and never look back. Mine is a Talo Distributor version (laminate stock) in stainless steel, and the only thing I don't like about the Mini-14 is the cheap, plastic upper handguard it comes with. You made the Mini-14 into an actual "Mini-14" aka the M14/M1A's little brother. Why didn't Ruger make it like this from the factory?
The accu strut helps prevent the barrel whip after it heats up. And yes, making it look like big brother is a great touch😊
