The original run of CM Punk in AEW - 23 matches!

- Опубликовано: 18 май 2024
- #cmpunk #aew #allelitewrestling #wwe #fired wanted to find out just how much of a loss CM Punk was going to be for AEW so the only way to do that was to have him compete on Ring of the Hawk season 4. The show where we watch back a wrestlers short run with a company and then give them a final grade. This should be CM punk at his best in aew because there was no drama for the majority of these 23 matches. The high point was the MJF feud and a random jobber called Lee Moriarty who makes the girls party!

That match with Wardlow was Super Cena-levels of booking.
It was just Bullshit
Regarding Matt Sydal/CM Punk, I don't know how many people know that these two came up together in the indies. Both got their big break in IWA-Mid South and are pretty good friends.
Matt doesn't get enough credit and Punk fed a ton to him to make him look good.
The Matt Sydal match was incredibly one sided but the one with Wardlow where Punk just eats like 19 elevated powerbombs in a row and still wins has to be the most egregious by far
The efed I'm in just booked a match like that, and I had a problem with it there, too.
If you play with your food it doesn’t Matter what happens before
He let MJF distract him from a victory
Clearly that was the story
It only made sense of they were planning a heel turn shortly
Oh, I forgot I was watching the UFC! Wait, I’m not?…. It’s scripted? They told a story? They made it obvious Wardlow could’ve won at any time but MJF’s shit screwed him? Fuck my life
@@LCKrazy You mean you don't collar and elbow lock up in real fights? smh

For Punk to come back after so long out, I thought his early stuff was actually pretty good, and he got better as he went. Just skimmed through and fair scoring on the whole in my eyes, if a bit negative in areas. For me you can see in the first 10-15 he was putting over other talent by making the match competitive, and that meant some pacing issues/things went a bit long, but it was a rusty veteran versus pretty green rookies, so I rein in my expectations personally as a result.
Yep this is an accurate take. He said on many occasions that he was coming back to help the young stars in that locker room and he actually tried. Unfortunately for Punk, he was sometimes in the ring with people that had never been in actual wrestling matches before that weren't just spot fests so there were some botches. He would also make people look good just for them to be forgotten by booker of the year Tony Khan the next week. I'm not sure I ever saw Lee Moriarty again after the Punk match.
You put it perfectly brother.
Maybe add a couple more paragraphs making more excuses for this run that has done extraordinary damage to the entire brand of AEW. That might make the cope in your post less obvious.
@@ellisdalton4282 This video and my comment are about his run of matches. The political BS is secondary and I don't really care. If you want to have petty 'wrestling wars' by all means do it, but I'm simply not interested. I want wrestling to be good, regardless of whether it's WWE or AEW.

It does but I already gave him more time than almost anyone else on the show. Plus I have no faith the video won’t get taken down, so is that time wel spent?
Honestly sucks that Punk decided to wait so long before coming back to the wrestling world.

Honestly I dont think its an issue of "getting on with the times". Dont hate modern wrestling but kicking out of so many hard hitting moves in a random match is ridiculous
It's a damn shame how everything turned out. This started out as HUGE and a long overdue comeback. All well, now we know how a CM return would go.
Agree with most of this video but the Kingston match was unbelievable when it happened. It's also important to note just how hot Kingston was at the time. It was a 2 week build to a one off match at a ppv in a sprint (by punk standards at least). It just felt so fresh not just for punk but in wrestling as a whole at the time. And this run really shows how difficult Ring of the Hawk actually is. It's easy to watch the videos on runs you didn't see but the context really is everything. Nice to see a run I was actually watching so I can see how the matches are graded in comparison to watching the shows.
It was never about being the best: it was the promos, the post-show interviews, the praising the other wrestlers… CM Punk was everything about modern wrestling.
Exactly right. Punk said on many occasions that he wanted to help the younger wrestlers on the AEW roster. That is why he had so many matches with unknown people. He arguably gave them too much in each match but I can hardly blame him if he was trying to make new stars. Khan also does a horrendous job of consistently booking people so whatever Punk was trying to do was getting nuked by Tony's shitty booking. Punk's AEW run was about as good as any actual star could have in that bush league company. Jericho, Moxley, and Danielson's runs have been worse overall than Punks was.
@@jthom0027 You think Mox aew run is bad? Do you remember what he was doing in wwe before?

@@TheRealAhoy Jericho and Danielson have had pretty good matches but their overall runs have been plagued with bad booking or injuries in Danielson's case (similar to Punk's). If you don't like death match garbage, Moxley's run has been abysmal.
An important thing about his earlier matches is that 1, he wanted to work with a lot of younger guys to give them a rub and 2, the story for Punk at the beginning of his run was that he was trying to shake off ring rust, hence why he went 50/50 with a lot of mid card guys
1-Giving a "rub" means nothing when he beats them in the end
2- shake off the ring rust lmao Edge is older and was retired longer than Punk and he went straight to main event matches and moved like he never left

i usually love CM Punk first run and matches, but then i saw this video without the hype magic from CM Punk first return to wrestling and i just agree with The Hawk with this one. all the best part is usually who CM Punk was facing and not himself.
Wasn’t bad, more of the definition of talking them into the building. Without the promos; the matches don’t feel the same without context.
But the AEW run wasn’t bad, nothing is better than the MJF stuff. Nice video
Khan must have MJF under a strong contract because there's no way WWE shouldn't have made him an offer by now, he's the best heel in the business because he knows how to get that Hollywood Hogan-in-1996 nuclear heat (the good kind). Then again I'm glad they didn't because they'd have taken away everything that got him over.

I think the issue with Punk's run is that his specialness wore off very quick. He never shoukd have been on TV as frequently as he was. Bring him in every once in a while to build up to the big shows and build up the big storylines.
Yea I agree but maybe a bit more than Brock shows up.

The thing about Punk’s matches is that as he had more of them and got older, his body started to give up on him which led to botches and bad-looking moves and finishes. Oh and that self-inflicted suspension didn't help his cause
It all depends how good the person he was wrestling if they could make him look good
Self inflicted? You’ve got to be kidding.
@@LimaKiloRomeoYup, self-inflected. He acted like a duck during the press conference, and his friend bit Kenney.
Most wrestlers do have more matches as they get older as their character doesn't do it for them anymore. Hardy Boyz are a good example.
@@TrueTrueTrainnot exactly, Flair dove head first into his character more and more as he got older(even though he loved to wrestle) and people prefered seeing his character work rather than seeing him wrestle
I do get your point though, but it can't hold true for Punk because none of these other yesteryear guys were coming off a 7 year break, barring Edge and Christian I guess and even then Edge got injured 6 months in his first run

"Just because a match is long doesn't mean it's good." God I feel this way with a lot of wrestlers right now, Omega being a prime example.
Watching a Omega or Bucks match is like watching a Street Fighter match with a 30 minute time clock. No selling, just moves.
I never really understood the dislike for his style of wrestling, it is exciting, somehow always has something different about them, and long enough for it to have high stakes. Not trying to have an argument, I just wanna understand the point of view
@@San-li9ml If we are talking about Omega, to me, he doesn't tell good stories in the ring. He doesn't convincingly sell. He does way too much goofy shit in the ring for me to take him seriously. You can tell he was never properly trained.
@@jthom0027 Yeah I can see how you would think that, the only good part of his promos is the way he ends it, it's catchy ngl
@@jthom0027I think what it is about Omega is that he is somebody who's way better as a heel than a babyface just because he rubs so many wrestling purists and lapsed fans the wrong way even though he is legitimately one of the nicest people in the business. He's pretty damn entertaining as a sniveling, unhinged, opportunistic little prick like when he was doing the Belt Collector gimmick. I think another thing is that Omega is a reminder that wrestling fans are all geeks and nerds, and I mean that in a good way. I think what you're missing is that Punk was helping put over guys he felt needed a rub when he first got there and was killing time until MJF became available. Thats why he was wrestling no name guys and putting them over in matches. Also, Punk agents those matches and you'll notice this guys never looked better. He didnt really start cooking until he got to MJF and that was the best rivalry in wrestling in about a decade.
A+ grade from me.
You’re not wrong about the mjf feud
@@Markyd123 honorable mention for the Darby match too. Darby never looked better. That match was timeless and any generation would've loved it.
You're exactly right. I think its funny when wrestling youtubers don't pick up on stuff like "perhaps the veteran is trying to get someone over" or "perhaps the veteran is trying to tell a story in the ring rather than relying on flips and no sells". Some of Punk's matches were botchy but hell, its AEW, what match doesn't have a botch that either breaks someone's leg or concusses someone. He was also wrestling people that weren't used to actually wrestling matches that weren't spot fests. I loved the stuff he tried to do with Team Tazz and the MJF/Kingston stuff was fantastic. Its just a shame AEW is run by a clown college.
I think the combination of him being away for so long, leading to multiple injuries and with all of the real life drama just made the whole thing disappointing.
Hangman hits a WICKED GTS. He should use that now that Punk's gone. Punk shit all over Hanger a few times, badly, and Hanger hasn't said a thing about old Phil, he's just let him stew. In their match here, Punk looks all pissy and can't believe he would be booed, or that empty headed Hangman would have split the crowd 50-50, and it's Hangman who actually gets the crowd to turn on him and go for Punk by doing the GTS mockery. This was still when Punk was beloved and the honeymoon phase hadn't worn off yet, pre-Elite brawl. They derailed Hangman here, who was on a huge run after beating Omega and ending that long story arc whose roots created AEW! Not gonna say keeping the belt on Hanger would have meant more money than the Punk/MJF feud, but they could have done more, a second match at least, where Punk beats him then. This one and done sent Hangman way back, most viewers won't view him in the same way, especially given the top heavy upper card.
I wouldn't worry about demonetization, I'd be more worried about Warner blocking the video.

Very much appreciate your work as always, Marky. Another great video. One thing I would say though, is you left out a lot of contextual points. If you count his promo wars and on the mic segments, his AEW run was for sure closer to an A than a B. Promo ability and story building is a crucial part of a run so you should include that as well. It was because of him AEW felt like a bigger company rather than an indie.
Furthermore I don't think you rated some of the matches fairly, some of the Bs and a lot of the Cs were actually 1 grade lower than what you had given out in the past for similar matches. The Darby Allen match and the MJF dog collar match (which is considered by many to be the greatest dog collar match) were unfairly ranked just to name a few. I agree. I think the biggest problem with guys like Meltzer is that they've brainwashed an entire generation of fans into thinking "workrate" and 5 star matches are the only thing that's important in wrestling, even though the exact opposite is true.
