The insane WWE break Rey Mysterio had in 2015!

- Rey Mysterio left WWE in 2015 to spend more time with his family. He ended up spending some time wrestling down in Mexico but he also had time to wrestle 15 matches for Lucha Underground. Dominic Mysterio also joined him for some of the episodes. I really thought Rey would just be here to collect a paycheck but it turns out that some really insane lucha matches went down in Lucha Underground. He had matches against the likes of pentagon, chavo guerrero and puma. Rey Mysterio is the temple was a big signing for them and he didn't let the company down.

The thing I remember most about Rey's break from WWE is that time he went to bloody NEW JAPAN and got to team up with Jushin Thunder Liger and Hiroshi Tanahashi. I couldn't believe it.
He actually was going to have singles matches with Will Ospreay and Jushin Liger. However the week before the matches were going to happen Rey finalized a new WWE deal and they wouldn't let him compete with New Japan.
He also accidentally killed a guy in the ring in Mexico.
@@Willtendo2 Aww man , that would have been killer !!!
@@TheFailedmessiah Perro Aguayo Jr. It wasnt really the fault of Rey completely . He didnt help matters though . But he had no idea Perro was already hurt .
He's NPJW mask is still one of my favorites of his career
This genuinely saved his career. He was able to get healthy, get back into shape and work a schedule that fit him better for his age! He wouldn’t have been resigned if not for this run!
His body always looks like the same dad bod as always
@@jason200912at 50 you’re probably gonna need a stick to walk bro humble yourself 😉
@@Get_em_gone_888 can't claim he got back in shape if he always looked the same his entire career
@@jason200912There's more to being in shape than pure aesthetics.
😅
I feel like his LU run really reinvigorated Rey. He lost a bunch of weight and got a lot leaner
That was one thing I appreciated about Rey's run away from Wwe, he was treated like a true legend and received tons of respect! Wwe just treats him like some little guy smh 🤦🏿♂️
He also fixed his knees
Man had a serious Dorito back, like he took body building to heart that run
@@IamMichael365hey basically built their entire hall of Fame class around him this year, they had him in a big time marquee match too. Don't say they don't appreciate him lmao. He currently runs a faction that had a whole ppv built around it, a faction where the other members all look up to him like a god.
@@TheRealAhoy If you say so, you're entitled to your opinion. Next time look at his entire wwe run before replying. Smh
Rey has done multiple interviews where he mentions the effects of stem cell therapy on his damaged knees and how slimming down helped him turn back the clock. I think its awesome that he has had this last run with Dominik and he looks like he has had a lot of fun.
lmao you're a bundle of sticks!!
@@ConanVictor lol
The stem cells are legal?
I bet that Rey started researching in it after Kobe Bryant first started stem cell therapy. It caught the attention and curiosity for many many athletes after that.
@@jason200912why wouldn’t they be?
Watching Mysterio and Puma in Match 8 is proof of how badly the WWE has dropped the ball on Ricochet. There's nothing stopping these bangers from happing today.
I think you have to see him after triple h Take creative control, take a chance
He’s amazing bell to bell. Anything outside of that is a charisma black hole.
@@bernardosantosribeiro6665triple h is waisting talent more than Vince all he shows is judgment day bloodline Seth Cody and other factions he don’t care about singles reasons why a new hurt business is starting with all the forgotten brothas
He has the athleticism but his face character is so bland and generic. Maybe a heel turn could work but his lack of charisma is what is stopping him from getting higher in the card
They drop the ball on absolutely everybody these days. People look at Seth Rollins as some God when his only decent year was nearly a decade ago. AJ Styles is near leaving and it hasn't even been a decade. People are too stupid to admit it and stay loyal to the shit they're fed by the Fed.
The start of this run was clearly about building all the guys around Rey and not about Rey himself which is likely why he allowed them to have the spotlight. He was just there to give his partners credibility.
Exactly. Most of that roster is now signed by aew and wwe
YES Rey Mysterio in Lucha Underground was one of the best times to be a wrestling fan. His match with Prince Puma is still one of my all-time favorite matches.
Wild how well he was moving even back in 2015 during like his huge era of mutliple knee surgeries and is still going almost 10 years later. Dude is a legend
hes ok
Early 2015 was the lowest point for Rey, i didn't believe at the time he was able to pull of Lucha Underground at all despite what happened in march 2015
It would be alot of work Hawk but I really think a comprehensive review of Lucha Underground like you've done for the early days of TNA would be incredible. Of course I have no idea how hard LU goes after their content on youtube but the series was so good I definitely think its worth a shot. Also will there be another An Idiot Watches Wrestling In 2023 video before All In at Wembley?
Probably won’t do a review of each individual episode. Don’t think there’s a big enough audience for that. But I’d love to do another ring of the hawk episode in this company. Really enjoyed doing Angelico and swagger too. I don’t know what I’m doing with the Wembely show yet but something will be happening. Starting with a weekly dynamite review coming soon.
Suggestion- cover the people who played multiple Wrestlers.
For instance, The Crew were all masked Bunny people and Argenis was one of the Skeletons.
They would ‘die’ and be masked folk (sometimes being ‘killed’ again).
@@TimTE01 ackchuyally... the only Crew guy who joined Rabbit Tribe was Lil' Cholo (Mr. Cisco and Mala Suerte). Saltador was played by Mariachi Loco/Siniestro de la Muerte aka purple skull guy. Bael (B-Boy) quit in frustration when he didn't get a new gimmick after they killed Bael off. Like you said Argenis was Barrio Negro aka gold skull guy (the shirt was to cover Argenis' tattoos) and Trece was Ricky Mundo. Pindar and Big Bad Steve were the same guy.
@@Markyd123if you do, I'd say focus on the guys that are now major players. Prince Puma/Ricochet, King Cuerno/Santos Escobar, etc.
I think people were getting a little sick of Rey Mysterio cause he was the same guy for his wwe run with little to no change in him. He got stale and while he could still go i can definitely see his burn out and he was a little directionless. I remember when he left WWE i thought it would be good for him to go away and get his passion back as well as resting. I think his run in the other smaller companies improved his stock a little bit and he worked out to look good for the first time in ages where he was a little chubby towards the end of his first run.
He was the babyface people were bored of and i was never really a Rey Mysterio fan personally but i never hated him i just wasnt interested in seeing him anymore and tbh even now i can take him or leave him but there is no doubt hes a influence for many people and earned his Hall of Fame place. The Ultimate Underdog
Also please do Vito in WWE ive been asking since forever :D
He's like John Cena with no moveset
I think the Taping Schedule is key here.
They would tape MULTIPLE Episodes at a time.
So, if Rey has 3 matches at one Taping, he might pace himself.
It’s still on him to disguise it though TBF.
I will never forget Rey in NJPW I had to pinch myself couldn't believe it
I watch this run. It was really good. I recommend it to any Rey fan. I wish WWE would used him as a Legend that he is like Lucha Underground
Dominik has come a along way since
probably really cool for rey to see, that guy gets so much heat lol
Ahh, Lucha Underground. The show that made me wish for another show like this in the last... *counts* 8 years :(
It was Cool , urban , and hip , sadly todays trend in wrestling is to satisfy the cosplaying geeks as in Nerd culture. I rather have my wrestling to be Cool and gangster and not Seeing the damn Best friends go over Proud and Powerful. (I haven’t watched AEW since, but I still read the overall landscape in today’s wrestling world.
Give MLW a try it’s a bit similar with lower production values.
@@jiovanysoltero923 ironic with how corny and lame your comment is
it was awesome damn shame they did not get renewed
@@Markyd123 Marky homie , i have watched MLW from 2018-2020 and parts here and there so i always loved that alternative. Same as to how ECW was to Grunge and Rock,
I miss Lucha Underground. It was awesome! Matt Striker and Vampiro were awesome on commentary.
They really were
I remember hating Matt Striker especially during the first few episodes, what with calling the slingblade "the TANAHASHI" which I thought was so wrong, but then he corrected himself and really started growing on me. Vampiro was always great. Those two were magic together. Too bad the show died.
Nice to see more Lucha Underground videos on here. I'm still waiting on Marty The Moth Martinez's run in the company.
I think he had maybe 27 or 28 matches so he counts.
I’m pretty sure someone requested that on patreon and I missed it. I will re add that to the list.
I really enjoyed his run and played the psycho character so well
lucha underground was wrestlings absolute peak. shame jack swagger showed up and killed it.
Never stop using this ROTH theme it’s classic af

Agreed!
one of dem, two of dem
Didn't expect to see Dominic. Good show sir. No need to hit me with a brick
3:39 Matanza was Jeff Cobb who works for NJPW now. He's not huge by the standards of the era you started watching wrestling in but he was big by lucha standards and so it made him a monster heel in LU.
Why is he the guy from Splatterhouse though?
The big issue was that Matanza was built up from Season 1 to be huge, in one segment Cueto is looking up at him like he is at least 6'6 but he is barely 5'10. Jeff Cobb is a good wrestler but the guy who played Luchasaurus would have been a better fit due to his height, and being 6'5 on a Lucha show is big enough since Muertes looked big but he is only 6'0 in real life (he's billed as 6'1, but I had a photo with him and I'm the same height as him).
@@poonoo87 yeah Luchasaurus would've been a better fit for the character, but I don't think he even was part of the show until season 3 maybe? His heel run in AEW rn proves he could've done the character, although Cobb is a much better wrestler
@@TimTE01 Why not? Splatterhouse is cool.
A very good episode, a whole lot of fun about a run I knew extremely little about.
Rey Mysterio, John Morrison, Ricochet, Mascarita Sagrada, Taya Valkyrie, Chavo Guerrero, and Brian Cage. Wtf is going on? All we're missing is some random interference from Orlando Jordan and this is the most random batshit crazy non-mainstream match ever.
winner was jeff cobb
Rey left WWE mostly because of burnout and injury. On the after the bell podcast he spoke about how when he was away he received stem cell treatment in his knees and improved his overall diet to reduce aging so the early stages of lucha underground is prior to or in the early stages of his treatment
He’s sorry and he loves him. That’s a funny little dig at Flair’s retirement match against Shawn Michaels
Love it everytime you show Lucha Underground content. Hope to see more in future. Have you done Pentagon in LU yet?
Oddly enough I loved Rey more there than WCW short bit in ECW and WWE/WWF
No pentagon jr is actually on my list. So I guess there will be more lucha underground stuff coming.
Love seeing the Lucha Underground videos, it’s all new to me since this was during the years I had stopped watching
Imagine booing Rey Mysterio but when he returned they lost their minds at the Royal Rumble fans suck man
I mean, we really and I mean REALLY loved Daniel Bryan then lol.
@@BlastBeatBreakdown that doesn’t mean you boo him he literally did nothing to you fans just cause people love Steve Austin doesn’t mean they had to boo the Rock people loved both of those guys it’s not like he was getting pushed down our throats 🤣🤣
You're talking about the fans who said that this year's RR was bad because it didn't have many returns, so don't be too surprised hahaha
@@BlastBeatBreakdownand look where he is now? Not the wwe lmao he is a footnote
WWE's tone deaf 2010s booking was entirely responsible for that, it was overwhelmingly obvious they wanted Daniel Bryan in that Rumble and would only have accepted Punk winning it as a consolation. Mysterio was merely the unfortunate last man to come out.
Lucha underground was really the best Wrestling show going at the time 💯 I love how they treated rey like the icon he truly is
His LU, AAA and indies run was amazing. I think he made a really good desicion to take a break from WWE and show us what he really is about, I think WWE started threating him like the big deal he is after his return. He still didn't got a nice push but he is very respected at least.
Do the Great Khali in Japan, the dude could really move back then
Awe fuck yeah , Rey Rey Was the Best after he left WWE , everyone that I grew up with that grew out of wrestling actually enjoyed Rey’s work outside of WWE, Since and more than likely helped better his Goat Statues. I loved this Run of Mysterio , since every Fed and Indy’s in the world were giving Him his Flowers and props, assuming he was going to retire. The only regret I think is we never got one more Jushin Liger vs Rey Mysterio match up. The Raza loved Rey outside of WWE , since we all felt like he got more respect in 2015, than his whole tenure at WWE at that time.
I wish we got to see him take on Will Ospreay, Jushin Liger, Bandido and several others like that
That double team move from Taya/Mundo is an assisted twisting neckbreaker that Anderson/Gallows calls Magic Killer.
Rey rey always have a place in my heart
Look like Rey wasnt in shape in the beginning of this run and was carried in the 3 man team. Went solo when he got his wind but i noticed he did his job and putting people over on his way out. Even if he went over, he elevated his opponents. Great run by a real pro
I forgot how hot Taya was back then and her early days in AAA i hope we get more from LU would like to see some on Marty the Moth
Yeah, she's changed... a LOT. I did a double take when I saw her here.
Lucha Underground was such an amazing gem. To bad it slide down in quality so fast.
By season 3 the show really started to go down in quality (minus kilshot vs Dante fox)
Money problems
He needed this leave, near the end of his first WWE run you could tell fans were so over him, he still got pops but they weren't as loud anymore.
Please take a look at Cody Rhodes in 2013, he nearly became the break out star he is now and has tonnes of fan support. Would be interesting if you think it was a missed opportunity or whether the timeline of events we’ve experienced was the best way.
I remember when he just left WWE and went heel in other companies. Honestly I wish he’d go heel again sometime just because he was such an asshole on the mic. It was great
@@villiannewyork yeah I think he’s brilliant as a heel, could dye his hair black to make it really authentic
Rey Mysterio also accidentally killed a guy in Mexico. Which mostly wasn't his fault. I think he did throw the guy outside the ring first which weakened the neck area and boom the drop kick to the ropes was what did it. That's what I remember. I think Rey going back to WWE helped clean up his image and helped his son.
It’s so sad too. But I agree with you
I think the guy had a heart condition already
It was a freak accident he drop kicked him into the bottom rope to srt up for a 619 and the guy wasnt ready for it so his neck whipped back and broke and was then pulled by his upper body roughly out of the ring which finished the job rey did nothing wrong mistakes happen if anyone was to blame it would be the athletic trainers who failed to secure his neck properly
You're talking el perro aguayo Jr. Crazy thing is, rey Mysterio was his first ever opponent and his final.
@@dylanheisler6999 He died from a heart attack brought on by a cervical stroke, caused by the broken neck. That's the official cause of death for Hijo del Perro Aguayo.
Edit: I had heard when it happened that he was already dead while on the ropes (he obviously had lost consciousness either way), so there was nothing that could be done to save him, but this may not be the case because of the liability reasons. Two ambulances, five paramedics and a doctor were at the arena, according to the president of the Tijuana Wrestling Commission, Juan Carlos Pelayo (and according to Meltzer, the doctor was delayed getting to the ring because he was already treating another injured wrestler).
“Rey does a line of coke and runs around like a deer on acid” is the funniest line I’ve ever heard on Ring of The Hawk. Brilliant absolutely brilliant
Also, so far, he is wrestling a lot more naturally here, and doing insane flips that he didn't even do in his WCW days.
LU is the best wrestling show in multiple decades.
It's not even close.
Not all in the same place but yeah, it's weird to think a post 2002 Rey Mysterio had 132 non WWE matches.
great match Big Hawk!
Rey did more moves in the match with puma than nakamura and balor have done in their entire careers combined
You know what I like? When Rey goes for the frog splash in LU but isn't a hokey little latino about it.
We all know why you're doing it, rey. Just do the move. No kissing the sky, no shimmy, no corny, small brain bullshit.
person who doesn’t understand showmanship is an inherent part of pro wrestling. Yikes.
I wonder how many masks and outfits Rey has ? You rarely ever see the same gear twice . Also he was doing some great matches here . I heard he has been doing the stem cell deal and it has rejuvenated him quite a bit .
Rey's mentioned before how he has over 500 different masks.
The dude makes action figures amazing to collect since most all of them are new.
I remember hearing about Rey Mysterio signing with LU, but I never got a chance to check out any of his LU matches.
If you look up "Where to watch LU reddit" someone has nicely provided links to watch all four seasons at your leisure.
11:46 the way he says chavo guerrero makes me die of laughter everytime
Seeing the cinderblock over the head of brian cage was absolutely wild. I loved it.
Good video! Rey misteryio is a very good wrestler in my opinion he may be an underdog in the WWE but in luchca underground he's awesome I'd give every match in luchca underground that Rey misteryio was in a B+ and would you be interested in talking about Darby Allen in the next video
That Aztec Warfare match is still one of my favorite things about 2010s wrestling. Wish Lucha Underground was still with us today.
The audio is not in sync with the video😢
Rey Mysterio is an amazing wrestler. You tend to forget that because he works for the WWE doing exactly what they want.
love your videos!,. maybe its just my computer but the audio was about 5 seconds off sync on this video
There’ll never be another Rey
That clip of WWE fans booing Rey shows how fickle they are.
Why is the audio not synced up with the video?
Mad to think that he was working with the likes of Ricochet & Jeff Cobb, without the accompanying fanfare you'd expect from doing so
Pleasant surprise from the greatest heel in all of wrestling history
Can’t Believe We Never Had Rey Mysterio Vs Rey Fenix , That Be Ultimate Dream Match
If LU lasted longer and Rey renewed his contract it might have happened
Is the audio off on this for anyone else?
anyone else notice the audio is out of time ?
Rey really is one of the GOATs. Been amazing for 4 decades now.
Funny i didn't know Dominick appeared in lucha underground
IDK if you could do this because of copyright, (but if you can) could you do Toni Storm's Main roster WWE Run? (She Did 10 Matches, 19 if you count the Mae Young classic)
Lucha Underground is so good, highly recommend it to anybody curious about it out there, the first couple episodes r kind of slow & awkward but once it gets going its so worth the watch. As a big Rey Mysterio fan his LU run is one of his best & LU introduced a lot of stars Like Pentagon & Fenix to a larger audience too
For some reason at 1:31, the video speeds up, but the audio doesn't which makes the audio desynced with the video for the rest of it. Not sure if this was a RUclips issue or not, but might want to take a look!
I sped the video up because it was such a long head sissors. Everything else is working normal for me.
@@Markyd123 weird, it's after that point where you describe things that happened a good two seconds beforehand.
What the hell happened to Taya Valkyrie??? Sure, it's obvious she's had work done on her face unfortunately. But she looked in way better shape and actually ripped in Lucha Underground.
Great video Hawk!
Looking back at where all the people in that first Aztec warfare now is crazy, the final 3 was Rey, Ricochet and Jeff Cobb lol
I had no idea Rey was in LU until today so finding this recap of his LU run was great!
In lucha underground they filmed three to four episodes in one night so the performers didn’t go crazy until the last episode of the night so most wrestlers were doing 8 matches in a week
Okay why did everyone else do crazy moves every match then?
@@Markyd123 cause it they only did one match that night or they had trio matches especially around Rey to protect him from injuries that’s why at the start he only doing his standard stuff then later on he’s started doing crazier moves
Jack Evens takes the best bumps... It always looks like he breaks his neck taking a move.
Dominik Mysterio in the indies, he did pay his dues lol
Remember when rey had personality unmasked and done the bronco buster
Rey vs Puma was the last great Rey Mysterio Jr match and appearance. Such a great reminder of what this man once was, and never ever touched while in WWE.
"He also takes out Taya and Mundo. Absolutely no idea what to call this but the crowd loved it." Is essentially the entirety of Mysterio's career.
Being Mexican American from LA when Rey left WWE I sought him out in other promotions. I have never done that before so becuse of that happen i got eyes on the indies for the first time. Rey is on the same level of El Santo… Legendary
I luv the look of LU they you for showing me this I luv Rey and Morrison great video
The Chavo match reminded me of why I Loved Dario Cueto as an authority figure; he wasn’t a heel or a face, he just wanted to start shit and keep us show interesting regardless of alignment.
Randomly fire Drago for no reason ? Cool! Chain your brother in the basement and unleash him as a monster ? Also cool ! Bully Chavo Guerrero ? Even better !
It was such a refreshing take to have the guy in charge be a character without having an obvious investment in any particular outcome
Rey Mysterio jr had some good matches in lucha underground that's too bad he never won a title
I guess the trios titles he won don't count?
I get why they booed at royal rumble but booing in a random match with bad news barrett is wack
They were still mad that Daniel Bryan wasn't in the rumble I get it Daniel Bryan was white hot but it wasn't his fault it was vinces fault or creative
weird disconnect between video and audio
The Audio is really out of sink
Is the sound ahead of the video for anyone else?
Rey Mysterio had a tremendous match with Will Ospreay, at the WCPW Pro Wrestling World Cup.
Rey Mysterio only went to LU, so he can re-up on the ‘Mexican Supplements’ he can’t fool me. After a couple months he started moving like it was 1997. 💉
You gotta hand it to LU, they REALLY had something going with the Cinematic Storylines
Revolutionized his career
I can honestly say I've never seen Rey do a submission before until now
Lucha Underground was fun to watch. Sometimes very cheesy with the storylines but a great alternative to WWE. Wish it was still around or made it big
Ask your girl why I’m covered in scratches 😂😂😂
There's a lot of AEW talents in this video that were used better in LU than they were in AEW
You don’t almost have me fooled, you said it was the last match as my timer went off for dinner and when I came back there was a different match and I was seriously like wtf is going on right now 😂 31:30
Ez and Miguel bout to control everything at the end. I’m interested in seeing if they gonna bring Romeo from soa since he canceled one of potters case on samcro.
The one thing I commend LU for doing was making some of their own characters out of established names like Cobb, Ricochet, Cross and others.
Seems like the audio and the clips being shown are out of sync. It's a bit jarring.
