Yes, it is beautiful, but as a knitter (60 years) and a spinner, I do not recommend making this. Not only is roving incredibly expensive, roving was not meant to be knitted as it has no structure and will fall apart in due time. Also, roving will not stand up to washing or pets. If one does wish to make such a blanket, consider a very chunky yarn in form of acrylic or superwash wool instead.

Found your video today. You are a great teacher. Easy to follow instructions and understand which is a big plus for someone hard of hearing. I used to crochet and knit a lot. Not to much anymore. I may give this one a try. Don't think it will bother my carpal tunnel. Thank you again for taking the time to make the video.

For those of us who can't afford this wool, the dollarama where I live just started selling really thick wool (I think it's actually acrylic) and it's $4 a roll. I think I'm going to use this method to make a rug for Christmas :) Thanks for the tutorial!

I am enjoying all your videos, Anja! I used the Michael’s Loops and threads, 4 skeins for $67 on sale. The project turned out well but it will be used for “show” only on a queen bed because the yarn sheds like crazy. It measures approximately 40” by 76”, longtail cast on of 21 stitches. I would like to make a wool roving blanket and did this less expensive one for practice. I read most of the comments and would say that before doing something like this, make sure you watch many videos and do research on felting roving wool. All of Anja’s videos were helpful and she has a couple on felting. I saw that someone spent $300 and didn’t like the result. Please don’t give up; I would take it apart and felt your yarn to make it much stronger and will shed less. I have learned as a knitter that tinking (unknitting) is part of the process of getting a good end result in knitting. Michael’s Loops and Threads will not need to be felted because it is polyester, acrylic and wool. Laurie

Like many of the comments I see listed, the wool is soooo dang expensive. I went on a hunt to find something more comparable that doesn't break the budget, and there is yarn I found at Michael's that works well. It's by Loops & Threads, their Free Spirit yarn. When on sale at Michael's, I got it for $25 per skein. I just made this blanket yesterday with that yarn and followed this tutorial. I used 4 total skeins, and I did 20 stitches instead of 18. I just had to felt each skein together which wasn't difficult. It turned out so beautiful! I want another reason to make more since it was actually pretty fun

Thank you for this awesome instruction, and for keeping it short. I'm sure your blanket is of superior quality, and some day i'l make one for myself.
However, for the more frugal bunch like me, just tonight I went to Michael's and bought two skeins of yarn at $34.99 each, and got the third one for free - that's not expensive at all. Since each skein is 54 yards of a BEAUTIFUL, super SOFT like Merino wool rose color, that would make me a decent size throw, at a total of 162 yards. There are so many GORGEOUS muted and natural colors to choose from as well. Since the blanket that I want to make requires 142 yards, I'll have plenty of yarn to possibly make it tad bigger!!! Today is January 3rd, so even if I make one blanket per month, I'll have plenty of beautiful handmade throws to give as a Christmas gift in December to about 12 people. Have fun!!! 😊👍👍

I was just given a bag of this huge yarn and I thought I would try this (knitting) as opposed to crocheting a blanket. Thanks for your video. It was very clear and you explained this process very well. I would love to know where you got your felting tools. I had never even thought of doing this because I've always stuck to "small" (regular sized) knitting needles and/or crochet hooks. Thanks for the video.

Hi Anja, We do have a small bed (150x200 cm) and I plan to knit a blanket to cover it nicely. Probably, I would need more length to cover also the pillows. Could you please advise on the followings:
    1, Should I buy 2 yarns?
2, How many cm I should leave for the tail?
3, Instead of 18 stitches how many stitches should I do for the first row?
Many thanks for your video! It is a great motivation 🌷😘

That blanket is a stunner! You did such a beautiful job and you taught me something new. I have always knit off and on, but I did not know what "felting" was. It makes total sense, and I imagine it is what manufacturers do with their knit products, only by machine. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I love this so much. I purchased 8 pounds or merino wool to try to do this but not only can I not fit 18 stitches on my arm so they are even but my tail is not getting shorter! Even though I’ve slowed your speed down and have taken it apart several times I can’t seem to get it right. I’m thinking about getting a thick rod of some sort to use as an arm. I think I’m twisting loops wrong to. I’m not giving up though because I am making this as a gift for my daughter for Xmas.

You stated upfront that it was luxury wool yarn so obviously it is going to cost some money. So please disregard those comments. The color of the blanket you chose was so beautiful! I have a question. What did the final measurements of the blanket end up being? I want to make a baby blanket but don't know what the gauge is for this thickness of yarn. Thank you so much. Regardless of other comments, you did a great job making this video. Not too fast and very clear. Blessings.

I can't believe how easy this looks. I feel confident in my ability from just watching! One question--how do you add in yarn id you don't have 1 continuous ball? Thank you!!

Dev Co I’m no expert, but I’ve always just tied my new yarn to the end of the old yarn. Just a basic knot works. Then, once you’ve knit a row or so past the knot, you can undo the it and weave in the tails. The yarn should be secure enough by that point. Or, if you’re worried the yarn won’t stay without the knot, you can leave it tied and just try to hide it within the blanket.

Hi there! Thanks so much for watching and for this lovely comment! And also sorry about my delayed response!! Eek! Thanks so much to the kind person who commented below with the helpful Ohhio link-that is a great technique! If you're using 100% wool, that will work perfectly!! If it's a blend, it might be a little more challenging-but maybe you could try felting it with a felting needle (like how I finish off the blanket ends) to get the fibers as interlocked as possible. If you're using an all synthetic yarn, I'm actually not sure what the best way to go is! Maybe it'd work to tie a really tight knot and then trim off the edges as much as possible so you didn't end up with a bumpy spot? This is definitely something I'll need to research! I just saw that Michael's with Loops and Threads came out with some super fun, more economical, giant yarn alternatives-including an all synthetic fiber kind of similar to this-so I'll have to do some experimenting! Thanks, again, so much for watching and commenting! I hope you have so much fun with your giant yarn project!!:)

theonlypinky Ok, but dry clean is still a wet wash and I would not like all those chemicals on a wool blanket.

Watching this while working on a baby blanket with DK yarn ... let me just dream of a quick, instant gratification knit while I'm sitting here taking 10min for two rows 😂 (yes, I timed it out of curiosity, not so helpful now for my motivation 😅)

Lilen Ni oh my gosh, I know exactly what you mean!!!🙈😂 I had a project that was taking me about that long to get through a row last year!!😳 Way to go sticking with it! Sometimes I have to take breaks from those slow ones and go do a fast, chunky yarn project just to help stay sane!😂😂😂

For people complaining about cost of Merino wool, one of the softest natural fibers out there, versus an acrylic blend you can find at Michael’s...the point of these giant merino blankets is that they are luxurious. Luxury isn’t cheap. More power to you if you can find an acrylic blend at Michael’s that serves your purpose, also.
