I think the shotgunners are higher rank then the regular combines Because they have the elite insignia on their shoulders. The same ones you can see on the back of the neck guard on the elite soldiers.
I've seen some discussion on this, and Shotgunners are believed to either be squad leaders, likely equivalent to an NCO rank as opposed to Elites which are officer equivalent, or the shared elite insignia is just an indication of their total threat level, since they charge head first at you and can literally tear you to shreds if you're not prepared (or in your entirety, depending on the mods you're using), while either they or another member of the squad serving as team leader depends on squad to squad. I'm not entirely sure which is the case, since Valve has not commented on this at all as I'm aware, though I think both are entirely feasible, just not compatible. Squad leadership may be given to the operative with the most experience, since they're all drones anyway and it's not like they can screw up through human incompetence.
I think the shotgun is more a self-defense or support weapon for them, since their main role is to coordinate the squad
@@physical_insanity Drones? No, they're cyborgs, that was proven in Nova Prospekt.
@@theironycomedy6 Not sure how this is relevant. The drone remark is to point out they're entirely mundane and collective in their behaviour despite their autonomy, a result of the cybernetic augmentations to remotely control them by a higher entity. Yeah, they're cyborgs, but how does that stop them from being drones?
The overwatch shotgunner shares the skull insignia on his arm with the Elite. This either indicates their potential danger or their rank. I'm guessing the shotgunner is a squad leader in absence of the Elites.
This could be true, i personally think it indicates their lethality but i could see it being like a officer insignia
I think for the combine's use of "Biotics" vs "Exogen" as used by Overwatch kinda displays the detection ability of Nova Prospekt. From what I recall when playing, that line can be heard when you are moving along the beach. I believe that Nova Prospekt used that term because the facility was able to detect the fact that there are biological entities moving on the beach where the restrictors are down, but were not able to identify exactly what it was. Therefore, the commander used the term "biotics" to describe the unknown biological entity, rather than "Exogen", which would strictly refer to Antlion
Hmm, hadn't thought of that!
Its things like this i love about half life
This is an amazing overview of the combine/overwatch empire soldiers , I love hl2!
Fact: In HL:A the overwatch soldiers were to be used,we dont know if used along the HL:A soldiers but the files should be there.
Nice video, I always love it when people do breakdowns on the Combine, though I would have liked it if you had done a little segment on squad size, structure and organisation, since I can't find exact specifics on how they're formed (I know they have a rifleman, sub-machine gunner and shotgunner for Stabilisation teams, but that's about the most of it), and maybe a little detail on how the Elites and Shotgunners may be related in some way given they share the same emblem. But overall, the video works well enough as it does, like well deserved.
I still think the hla ones exist somewhere in there universe, because they only really attack you in the quarintine zone and aren't seen too much inside the city, and logically why would the combine get rid of wallhammers and suppresors? Especially genetically coded weapons from the grunts, it seems that could really help them at an aftermath loss advantage
In the variants and hierarchies you forgot the civil protection which are a lower rank then all of the combine.
This is talking about the transhuman soldiers, the CP are not modified in any way.
A very nicely detailed overview! Well done!
btw the weird shotgun texture is the conflicting addon TF2 Mounting Fix
I personally think the Transhuman Combine Units appeared wayyyyy earlier than HL:Alyx, presumably early-occupation era they're a bit like the grunts or Ordinals, and towards the mid-era of the occupation the high ranking soldiers are all more like the Ordinals with a hierarchy system, and towards the late-occupation period, they start a sort of extension of their standardization process, simplifying the hierarchy along the way up until the events of HL2.
Theres the possibility that HL:Alyx combine units could be Quarantine zone exclusive, but I think that only applies to their equipment such as addon extra armor, as Wallhammer seems suited for Urban combat, not long-distance firefights, which the Ordinals, Suppressors, and the HL2 Soldiers are fitted to fight in. And the Grunts seems fit to be a Civil Protection Squad Leader if need be.
This is surprisingly well done, good job!
Although this isnt a Half-life Alyx video, I would like to add the soldier Types from it:
-Overwatch Grunt: Armed with an MP7 (im not sure) And a Tank with grenades on the back. White-Orange coloured armor, not brainwashed
-Overwatch captain: Armed with an AR2 (also not sure), A satchel with a manhack. Blue armor with yellow shoulders, brainwashed.
-Overwatch "spike" (The soldiers call them spikes, maybe theres a different name) : Armed with a heavy machine gun with a forcefield attached to it. Black armor with giant shoulder pads. Brainwashed
-Combine supressor: Armed with a minigun. Grey armor with a white helmet (that has a different shape than regular ones). Brainwashed
Grunt gets Pulse SMG.
And Captain aka ORDINAL has what the community call as "AR1" or just Pulse Rifle, becuase that was the first prototype.
Those are SHIELD, that's correct.
It's a Pulse Minegun for supressors aka APF which stands for Antibody Protection Force.
@@originaltawan7221 Thanks, I noticed that some Statements were wrong
Fantastic video! Very well made!
Underrated work
You deserve way more subs
Good summary.
My dad used to give me The Orange box with half life and I tried with my first try and I'm amazingly liked it so I like the game when I was playing half life I experienced my first dropship and I like the detail of it I tried to get in the drop ship invisible barrier at the plaza I experience siders I think I type it wrong but I like those I died five times in the plaza so that's how I like the game I hope I play it again :(
What
Are you going to make a video on the metro cops?
The satchel is used to store grenades, the Shotgunner and Elite are equivalent in rank, the Elite will always be the commanding unit in Combine facilities or guarding VIP's, the Shotgunner will always be the commanding unit in outside operations, like at the coast or white forest. They also have the elite OTA soldier on one of their pads. (The combine logo with the circle replaced with a cracked skull.)
Can you make mods that reskin or adds new combine soldier that use the suppressor and commander texture?
Though I may be incorrect, i believe the Combine wear modified Russian armor. Like the Korund vest, for example
Oh my god I knew were we com from
Is there any model difference between the prison guards and regular soldiers?
Shotgunners wearing an elite patch on their hand, so I dont think that his rank is the same with the regular one
Yeah, I'd assume they, when deployed among regular Overwatch Soldiers, have the equivalent ranks of squad or platoon leaders.
