I came to say this. His character was a lawyer for the ACLU. In general, the position that the ACLU takes on a given issue is a good moral barometer. With few exceptions, the side they take on an issue is the side that history views as morally correct.
Perhaps you did not recognize Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, as the talk show host. He also denies the concept of separation of church and state and believes that the Constitution is biblically based. His daughter, Sarah, is governor now.
Two women talking about the Christian Nationalist deity would not pass the Bechdel Test. They're very clear that their god is male. God the Father and all that. Also, I bet you won't find two women talking without a man present in any scene in this movie.
Lol yeah even though God wouldn't technically have a gender as God and other deities were generally ethereal beings that had no reproductive organs on their bodies as they would not need to physically reproduce. It's just that the English language has very limited number of pronouns and of course, modern religion still remains largely male-dominated so they opt in with God is male even though again, not how it would work.
I mean the original intent of the Bechdel-Wallace test was to set the minimum bar for there possibly being a lesbian in a movie, before movies were really allowed to openly identify homosexual characters. So with that in mind, two women talking about the Christian Nationalist god would definitely not pass the test, as homosexuality would be a sin to them. EDIT: Assuming they are Christians discussing the deity in positive terms, I guess... If there are two women arguing about the separation of church and state, then it might pass?
I'm technically a Christian and I fuckin Love Ms Emma and her poignant insight and views, absolutely brilliant. I’m always saddened when I try explaining to Trumpers that Biden is a practicing Catholic and Trump not only isn’t Christian but knows little about religion at all. They seem astounded by this because they take it as assumed that politicians should force their religion on others so Biden can’t be a good Catholic since he doesn’t do that. And they completely ignore all evidence that Trump isn’t Christian because they don’t really care, just as long as he forces their religion on everyone else.
05:43 I’ve actually gotten to hangout with Ray Wise and shoot-the-shit up in Snoqualmie (where they filmed Twin Peaks) he’s chill AF. I’d give better than even odds this was just a paycheck. He would likely say something akin to “somebody’s got to pay my mortgage” if asked about this part.
Christianity has been taking a huge hit recently, come to think of it ever since the "Gods not Dead" franchise started. What an interesting coincidence.

Per Christianity (I was a devout believer until age 20/now a humanist): Jesus taught followers to not become involved in politics or earthly government. Satan tempted him with rulership over nations and Jesus rejected it. Jesus taught his followers to separate politics from faith ("render unto Caesar" -- pay taxes, etc -- but keep faith in God). Christians are not to seek temporal earthly power, which corrupts, but God's Kingdom, which is eternal. Christians are not to be like progressives (me!) who seek to build human movements/governments to create justice but to wait on Jesus to return and establish the Kingdom of God. You are not to be impatient and "do it yourself" but to wait on the Lord faithfully. "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36 I'm astounded how Christians no longer ask themselves: WWJD? Now its Trump/MAGA/power and money.
"I'm not a politician, I'm a priest! Yeah I know it looks the same, but it's different, just trust me. Now where's my campaign mon*cough* I mean tithe?"
I'm a Christian though it's very depressing these days with what the right is doing in His name. Not sure He would have a problem with citizens of a democratic republic exercising their right to vote. Just not to create a new zion or theocratic government. You can't please God by compelling somebody to do / refrain from doing something. Just my $.02
Jesus' second temptation...he turned it down. I don't think there's even one christian in ten thousand - in the U.S. at least - who would do the same. The rest...if he promised them absolute political power, they'd sign the devil's contract eagerly, without a second thought.
The only Christian sect that seems to understand that is Jehowa Witnesses. As much as I disagree with the org I also can't help but respect their fight for religious/political neutrality in the USA. They fought in courts to have the freedom to not participate in daily brainwashing, I mean reciting the pledge of allegiance You can't serve two masters. Too many Christians seem to forget it. They allow earthly politics influence their religion. Nothing about New Testament even suggests that you should be against immigration. The only arguments I hear are secular. And yet religious people delude themselves into beliving it's something God wants

Ray Wise is a returning actor. He was the evil atheist lawyer in the second one.
Of course, in these films, the words evil and atheist are synonymous. And in this films pastors are much better than lawyers or professors or social workers opposed to Christian overreach.
Funnily he also played the devil in a show called Reaper 😂
I came to say this. His character was a lawyer for the ACLU.
In general, the position that the ACLU takes on a given issue is a good moral barometer.
With few exceptions, the side they take on an issue is the side that history views as morally correct.
I love his Skip Reming character that he played in Newsreaders.
You mean Councilor Satan?
Perhaps you did not recognize Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, as the talk show host. He also denies the concept of separation of church and state and believes that the Constitution is biblically based. His daughter, Sarah, is governor now.

Two women talking about the Christian Nationalist deity would not pass the Bechdel Test. They're very clear that their god is male. God the Father and all that. Also, I bet you won't find two women talking without a man present in any scene in this movie.
I imagine christian movie makers have a lot of difficulty with the Bechdel test.
Two women could talk about makeup to pass the test, it’s not hard, lol.
And that's like the lowest standard in movies
If more Christians approached the faith & life in general from the perspective of an atheist, they would then truly see what is more important in the world than looking at it from their moral high ground perspective.
based on a book?!?!?!? I thought they were just working through the list of stories Christians tell online that are 'totally true and not made up' when they claim to be the persecuted group in america. Every God Not's Dead film script starts life as a facebook post by the family relative I'm too polite to block.
"And then everyone clapped and cried..."
It was a book that was popular around 20+years ago
@@dresden2049 yeah but I could have sworn the story about the christian standing up to the philosophy lecturer was even older. I remember hearing it before facebook was even a thing. In fact the annoying born again christian who lived 2 doors to me in university told me it as a 'true story' about 6 months into our first year of university. So thats at least 2003.
Yeah a quick google shows the 'christian student vs atheist teacher' story is an ancient chain mail story, the actual 'god's not dead' book seems to only share it's name with the original film's plot, or maybe the chain mail was included in the book.
@@connla oh I am sure. That is their comfort blanket story. They tell themselves this story cuz it would never happen like that. I just remember working at target and it was there next to the “the secret” lol
The ironic thing is, there is actual persecution of christians happening in the world...just not in America. And these christians making these films could not care less about it. So they ignore real persecution of real christians, and instead make up stories focused on them feeling sorry for themselves, and how someday they're gonna get even....with loads and loads of American flags, of course.
Ray Wise (Kane) played The Devil in a CW show called Reaper around 2007.
Thank you! I was wracking my brains trying to remember what it was called. He was great as Satan - very 50's era Rat Pack Prince of Darkness.
Hoping for a Left Behind/Gods not dead crossover.
Triple cross over: God's Not Dead/Left Behind/I Am Legend.
Friend who works in a bookstore tells of the day when this guy came up to the counter with an armful of Left Behind books pissed that he found them in the fiction section and demanded that they should be put in the history section.
She tried to explain to him that the events in the books didn't happen, but he said that that didn't matter they are real stories.
Man I wasn't expecting them to make a prequel for the Handmaid's tale.

All it needs are a few shills to promote and sell the faith. (And clip the ticket 100% on the way thru).
Correction: The concept of God will never die so long as it can be leveraged to gain power. And yeah $$$.

Ray Wise also plays a spectacularly creepy unsub in an episode of Criminal Minds!
Thanks for that, I thought I was losing my mind (And at my age it is a viable possibility) but wasn't bothered about it enough to fact check it.
I just always remember Ray Wise as being the President in the C&C Red Alert cinematics.

8:37 The “God’s just standing in the way” is a direct reference to Trump’s “I’m just standing in the way” quote.
Which is a standard fascist saying.
"We've got to elect the most Christian candidate...." So, anyone but Trump?
On paper, yes. In practice, he has a lot in common with your average Bible thumper.
@@DoctorBiobrain Well Trump has said "nobody has done more for religion than me". Him saying "I am bigger than Jesus." would have been more modest.

Christianity has been taking a huge hit recently, come to think of it ever since the "Gods not Dead" franchise started. What an interesting coincidence.
Probably the other way around -- the last spasm of a declining religion.
God's not dead, but at this point, He's awfully embarrassed.
Jesus had a deadbeat dad who expected Him to fight his battles for him. he set Him up and left Him to His fate…. if any of Scripture is accurate, He’s trying to ditch those dodgy followers of His. I guess they’d say “all part of the Plan” yadda yadda yadda. if there will ever be a true form of Christianity, it will come after this one falls.

Yup. That was a definite learning curve for me.
It's due to an arbitrary choice some news channels made when talking about the 2000 election and coloring in maps for display, and it stuck.
I think the red is a better colour choice, as red is often used to mark something evil or dangerous.

Some people think god is real, others think Hannibal Lector is real..... funny thing is that the ones that believe in God vote for the one that believes in Hannibal.... making Hannibal greater than God ;-)
Man, it would be fun to see God's Not Dead as a series get reviewed properly by Emma. I'm only more familiar with the first two, but this one seems like it's going to get extra fucky-wucky too.
Just my $.02
From memory the Pope retconned that?
Jesus' second temptation...he turned it down. I don't think there's even one christian in ten thousand - in the U.S. at least - who would do the same. The rest...if he promised them absolute political power, they'd sign the devil's contract eagerly, without a second thought.
The only Christian sect that seems to understand that is Jehowa Witnesses. As much as I disagree with the org I also can't help but respect their fight for religious/political neutrality in the USA. They fought in courts to have the freedom to not participate in daily brainwashing, I mean reciting the pledge of allegiance
You can't serve two masters. Too many Christians seem to forget it. They allow earthly politics influence their religion. Nothing about New Testament even suggests that you should be against immigration. The only arguments I hear are secular. And yet religious people delude themselves into beliving it's something God wants
