The first two minutes of this video I was like "Oh my god, please, don't do that, this is absurdely misleading.", but you totally changed tack in the last half! This is really good and a perfect example of how many urban legends of the middle ages find its way into modern popular belief. The animation is really good too!

Only unauthorized translations were forbidden, since they were specifically worded by their translators to support their preferred heresy. As for accessibility, the reality of hand copying books meant cost and literacy were the limiting factors.
I know one day this channel will explode. While the format isn't particularly lacking on RUclips, the narration and animation is definitely one of my favourite from the bunch. I really hope ya stick with it.

Just a small nitpick: the /gl/ in Guglielma (and in Italian in general) is actually pronounced in a weird way that I don't think exists in English. I don't really know how to describe it, but the International Phonetic Alphabet symbol for that sound is /λ/, so if you search that, it should pop up. Apart from that, great video, hope you get many more subscribers!

Appreciate the acknowledgement that it’s a legend, rather than a historical fact. A lot of it sounds like a funny story that people would share in taverns. Quite a few modern scholars are comfortable with saying it’s just a medieval legend that regained its popularity during the reformation.
I was thinking that if it had really happened, the church would have been way more likely to cover it up. As in, continuing as nothing had happened. Maybe throw in some story about a miracle or something to explain things away. Not making it know a woman was the Pope, and just let her keep at it.
@@Ikajo I don’t think they’d explain it by miracle(implying a good thing happened). Just a simple cover up. The “black legend” that persisted in major academic circles until the early 2000s made all of these tales more believable in Anglo-Protestant spheres of influence. Just say a funny but baseless story about medieval Catholics and a lot of people will believe it.
@@bigman7856 This. I appreciate that more scrutiny is being put on this characterizing Medieval Catholics as dim-witted, violent tyrants. It's not really true, even many of the more brutal tales (such as the expulsion and persecution of Jews) are being revealed as actions made by rulers *against* their church's edicts. The Jewish pogroms are a good example of this actually. The Papacy generally accepted Jews (and used their banks/tradesmen) without mich issue. Hell, several Popes decreed all Churches were to be safe-spaces for Jews in the event of a pogrom. Who did want to attack and expel the Jews were secular kings unable to pay back their debts, so resorted to anti-semitism and superstition to root out their obligations. That's not say the Catholic Church wasn't a despotic government, but as a government, they were no more uniquely cruel than their Roman predecessors, and that includes trying to also maintain their predecessor's efficiency.

They also did this before during the Crusades, during the bubonic plague, and when rome fell. In fact, the Catholics have a far longer record of saying this whenever something they dont like happens...and the protestants have proudly followed the tradition. Gay rights? It's the end times! Any sort of war? It's the end times! Irreligion on the rise? It's the end times! A new sect of christianity is born? It's the end times!
Prophecising the end of the world is actually heresy in both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. No one can claim to know the exact date of the Day of Judgement.

Fun fact: there was a second, quite recent time when a woman almost became a Pope. And not just any woman - the Virgin Mary herself. In 13th of May 1981 there was a pretty famous assassination attempt at the Pope, John Paul II. At the beginning everyone thought His Holiness would not recover, and to preserve the Papal succession group of students decided to put painting of Virgin Mary on Papal throne, thus crowning her as new Bishop of Rome. Right after they've put it there they claimed to have expirenced a strong wind inside the Palace, which blew the painting away from the throne. They considered it as a divine message (to be honest I would as well) and didn't attempt it again.

Fun fact: there was a second, quite recent time when a woman almost became a Pope. And not just any woman - the Virgin Mary herself.
In 13th of May 1981 there was a pretty famous assassination attempt at the Pope, John Paul II. At the beginning everyone thought His Holiness would not recover, and to preserve the Papal succession group of students decided to put painting of Virgin Mary on Papal throne, thus crowning her as new Bishop of Rome. Right after they've put it there they claimed to have expirenced a strong wind inside the Palace, which blew the painting away from the throne. They considered it as a divine message (to be honest I would as well) and didn't attempt it again.
