You can tell Alec is doing what he loves, that he has a passion for smithing. He seems to love teaching and spreading his love for his craft. And he’s good at it, too.
Alec my almost 2-year-old enjoys your RUclips channel. Alec Steele is something he has added to his growing vocabulary. I noticed this today, and thought you'd enjoy that.
Good to see you two working together. My two favourite you-tubers. If you hadn't guessed, I'm an older bloke that just getting into RUclips. Alec, your videos are informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work. Mike, your videos never fail to educate and entertain. Keep up the good work. You two young blokes are great role models for younger people. All the best, fellas/
Hey Alec, check this out. This is the data sheet for a very common O1 tool steel, it shows what hardness you get at a specific cooling speed. I suggest going for something below 300 HV, so you would need to cool your steel down from 800°c to around 600°c in roughly 5 min. Your cooling speed was probably way too fast. Maybe put it in the forge together with a block of steel. Slower is always better ;)
Hey Alec im watching the video now. I have an idea of your interested though. Now that the frame lock knife is done why don't you try your hand at a Swiss army knife. Like with pliers, knife, corkscrew, bottle opener, ext. Or what ever you want, I think you would have fun with that challenge. Anyways keep doing you, and stay awesome.
I know what you meant about the grinding the knife. I have to reshape about 20 knives every day. And they are all different type off knives with cracks, broken tips, hole that i have to grind out. Great video Alec. Your keeping my mood up all day
When the camera wasn't rolling, Mike and his dad built a three bedroom flat in the loft using nothing but rubbish from the industrial estate. True story.
I have subscribed because of the video with TA Outdoors where you taught him to forge a flint striker. I really liked your enthusiasm, and look forward to living vicariously through you. Thanks!
Oh man! 2 of my favorite youtubers at once! What a treat! Great to see you both having fun and learning from each other. Keep it up, both of you! Love from Norway
Looking good Mike and Alex, can't wait to see the outcome... hope it's top notch. Being hand forged, designed by the user and engineered by the master; I'm hoping it's just perfect for Mike. Can't wait to see the following videos on both channels. Great to see you with a hammer in your hand Mike, a skill all blokes (and adventurous ladies) should get a handle on and use, or at least the concepts of how it works and why.
Hey Alec you have inspired me to start blacksmithing I have a piece of railroad track for an anvil and part of a forge and I just finished my first pare of tongs thanks for the inspiration Alec you have a great rest of your day
Thought my kitchen was on fire. No wait, it was that truck 😂 This videos was fun, especially like that rugged knife design, not seen one like that before. Cheers both.
If I ever get the funds I would love to just watch you work for a few hours. You can always tell experience in someone by the little things they do. And experience is something you need right before you get it.
Thx alec, I learned a lot from you and your vids.. About different steel types and the machines! Now I know the difference between the softer and harder steel.
Ya know, I decided in retirement I wanted to get into wood working as a hobby. This brought me of course to RUclips to help learn woodworking, but I soon found that the RUclips maker community wood, metal, they really are a community, yeah there may be conflicts here and there but I just find it awesome
Dear Alec Steele i am a huge fan and am absolutely amazed at the work you do I wish that some day I can accomplish as much as you have already I am a knife maker as and wood worker I have also done several restoration projects as well i am not the best but I like to think I improve with ever knife I work on thank you for being my inspiration yours truly - Aaron Renda
O1 is also prone to air hardening when normalizing. I use a carbide drill bit for all my hole drilling now. Less bother and if you get a sheet of martensite you can still go through it
I wish I could afford an Alec Steele custom bumper for my 20 year of quarter million mile Land Cruiser. That would be epic. Anyway, I love these collaborations, well done!
Or perhaps a seperate video on file work on some scraps of metal. I live in France and here it is difficult to find metal for knife making, I don't want to spend a fortune on good metal for my first attempts so i use old circular saw blades cut up with an angle grinder. Any other ideas for cheap metal would be welcome. Keep up the good work Alec. Great collabs.
A full tang knife should have a tapered tang for balance. A knife that is handle heavy isn't as comfortable. I prefer to taper mine with the mill but A lot of people grind it. You should try it Alec I think you'll like the feel and it also has a nice look to it as well....more refined.
Chris R - I can't think of any real practical reason to taper. I guess my reason is more aesthetic than anything else, it makes the knife look more refined. Each to his own though but I think every maker ought to at least give all the different options a try to see what they like. The main point though really is just removing some of the handle weight.
Well, I've only recently begun to follow you and I've just watched 4 years of episodes in 3 days and that is not supposed to happen :D . Anyhows, have you tried to make a Japanese sai? I'm interested in how you would make it.
I thought the blue dykem in the thumbnail was a blue handle scale. That sounds like a good project for Alec to integrate blue dykem into a final piece.
Can't wait to put the knife to the test! Thanks for being an awesome teacher Alec 👊🏻
TA Outdoors - I'm amazed at how good of a teacher Alec seems to be, and at such a young age too.
TA Outdoors what's up man!!! I love your vids!!!
TA Outdoors I
Man, you have a blacksmith vein, keep training.
Oh my god! Mike and Alec made a video together!!!
Thanks for the shout out Alec!
These more instructional videos are my favorite kinds from you, Alec!! Thanks for taking the time to teach!!
Forge a Damascus Paperclip.
That’s an awesome idea
You can tell Alec is doing what he loves, that he has a passion for smithing. He seems to love teaching and spreading his love for his craft. And he’s good at it, too.
Hell yeah, my two favorite channels in a single video!(insert not so manly squeal of happiness)
now if Alec would do something with Demolition Ranch, life would be complete...
Alec would need to learn how to smith gun parts, make his own 6 shooter. that would be cool though.
Alec my almost 2-year-old enjoys your RUclips channel. Alec Steele is something he has added to his growing vocabulary. I noticed this today, and thought you'd enjoy that.
Don't forget to make a 90 degree (sharp) backspine for using the firesteel!
F or C?
Firesteel lol
Good to see you two working together. My two favourite you-tubers. If you hadn't guessed, I'm an older bloke that just getting into RUclips. Alec, your videos are informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work. Mike, your videos never fail to educate and entertain. Keep up the good work. You two young blokes are great role models for younger people. All the best, fellas/
These are the types of collabs that I'm sure the fans and the presenters alike enjoy. Alec seemed to be in his element teaching as well. Great stuff!
Awwww yeah! Two of my favourite 'Tubers making sharp cutty things together. Great video guys, really great. Can't wait for more.

Indeed. Aren't you the cunning linguist? Well, something to do with it anyway.
Afternoon tea and (at least one) Alec Steele video... my daily routine for the last 3 weeks
first Mike Boyd and now TA Outdoors? Alec you are the gift that keeps on giving!
I've been watching Alec's videos for ages and only came across TA Outdoors last week with the log cabin series! Small RUclips world!
These guests are great. It really highlights Alec's hard earned skill as a blacksmith when he's teaching new folks forging.
O admire the fact that you are not only able to make a knife, but that you are able to teach how you do something and why you are doing it.
Great to see people learning new skills!
Love TA outdoors and mike he’s a top fella and his dad
Yup! He's a totally awesome dude!!!
His dad is a nut job and it’s awesome checkout tafishing

My 2 favorite UK RUclips guys in one frame?!? Heck yea!
I love watching TA! Great watching my favorite RUclipsrs collaborating
looks like Mike also decided to grind a little material off his knuckles
All fun and games until you see your knuckle joint :)
chase tuttle I noticed that too. It's just a flesh wound pee on it. Hahah
Blood, sweat and more blood....
Alec Steele old rag and thousand mile an hour tape= Robert is your mothers brother
Been there. I do still remember how stunning white it is when surrounded by blood)
This was by far one of my favorite videos you explained things sooooo much better. Do this again Do this again Do this again.
Such a good teacher, Alec. Good little series here. Looking forward to the final product.
I know what you meant about the grinding the knife. I have to reshape about 20 knives every day. And they are all different type off knives with cracks, broken tips, hole that i have to grind out. Great video Alec. Your keeping my mood up all day
Holy shut my two favorite things to watch just joined together. Bushcraft and blacksmithing
I recently discovered TA Outdoors, so this collaboration between you two is super exciting to me!
Tafishing (his dad’s channel) is probably what got me back into fishing and thus the outdoors, graham is a nut job and I love it
Finished making my own bushcrafter out of saw mill blade yesterday.
Thanks for the vids and getting me into knifemaking
Alec, love the teaching vids! Collaboration, teaching, learning, fabulous!
Damn, Alec seems like such a good instructor! Thanks for the nice videos mate.
Great video! Love seeing a new skill set being taught to someone. That's a knife he'll use and cherish for many years
When the camera wasn't rolling, Mike and his dad built a three bedroom flat in the loft using nothing but rubbish from the industrial estate. True story.
Hiker Bro A true TA fan comment, right there! 😂
K Jonesy Wouldn't miss an episode! I'd love to meet them and Alec if they ever get over to this side.
That would be a great meet n greet!
They meow need to do bush forging in the woods
My two favorite youtubers doing a colab, what a week!
I have subscribed because of the video with TA Outdoors where you taught him to forge a flint striker. I really liked your enthusiasm, and look forward to living vicariously through you. Thanks!
I love how well you teach people to be able to do this themselves. And hand over the hammer and they get a personal piece.
Loving this series so far!
Best channel on youtube. Between its usefulness and entertainment. Keep it up alec.
Great, can't wait for the finishing touches! Then make a Damascus bushcraft pack grille!
Howdy Alec! I’d love to see you make a San Mai blade where the spine half of the blade is a mono steel and the edge half is Damascus (or vice versa)
Oh man! 2 of my favorite youtubers at once! What a treat! Great to see you both having fun and learning from each other. Keep it up, both of you! Love from Norway

VERY nice!!! So cool that you both take the time to truly teach!

awesome! I love it when people I've been watching for years do a colab even though their content isn't really the same topic
I love these videos I feel like Im learning just as much as your guests, its like your hosting an online class.
Wish we had metalwork teachers like you at school, i would have been a blacksmith.
Awsome mate.
Good guy Alec promoting 2 channels in one video keep it up man!
If I ever get the funds I would love to just watch you work for a few hours. You can always tell experience in someone by the little things they do. And experience is something you need right before you get it.
New subscriber from USA, VERMONT....Great collaboration with TA OUTDOORS....Wonderful teacher you are Alec 👌👍
Love seeing you guys together..this is awesome!
Thx alec, I learned a lot from you and your vids.. About different steel types and the machines! Now I know the difference between the softer and harder steel.
Alec you should put a bunch of flags in your grinding room, all kinds of free wall space!
Ya know, I decided in retirement I wanted to get into wood working as a hobby. This brought me of course to RUclips to help learn woodworking, but I soon found that the RUclips maker community wood, metal, they really are a community, yeah there may be conflicts here and there but I just find it awesome
Loving this collab! Mike is awesome! Shame his dad couldn't come along, he is great as well!
Great how Alec nearly set the sketch on fire at 5:40.
Easy Peesey Whack Some Steeley. There's some t-shirt gold for you.
Eric Janney still think he needs one that says okakly dokley...😁
Yes
Peesey and steeley do not rhyme 🤨
New subscriber - came from TA. Love your videos. Amazing! Seem like a great teacher.
Thanks Alec for making more educational videos 👍 I just started blacksmithing as a hobby and that way I can learn way more for my future projects
New glasses really changed Alec’s whole look
Just suggested this last week after watching one of his vids. Not taking credit, but so excited.
Love these videos where you have someone else in the shop and take on the role of teacher. More plzkthnx.
so now, we need a video where Alex goes and learns some bushcraft with ta outdoors
Like the thru the viewfinder shot Jamie.
alec, i would really REALLY like to watch you make an attachment for the surface grinder! maybe even forge it?!
Glad to see you two together! Two of my favourite youtubers, even though you are Brit's and not Canadian. ;)
O1 is also prone to air hardening when normalizing. I use a carbide drill bit for all my hole drilling now. Less bother and if you get a sheet of martensite you can still go through it
Two of my favorite you tubers! Awesome vid!
Oh Yeah! Thanks Alec!
Really like your longer build videos and would love to see you forge a halberd, spiked mace or some other medieval awsomeness. //Swedish fan
This is awesome two of my favorite RUclipsrs!!!!!
I wish I could afford an Alec Steele custom bumper for my 20 year of quarter million mile Land Cruiser. That would be epic.
Anyway, I love these collaborations, well done!
Christmas lights on the cutting torch tanks NICE!!!!!
Correction on the power hammer
Looking forward to seeing that surface grinder up and running.
i love ta outdoors and alec steele! Best combo of the year?
Or perhaps a seperate video on file work on some scraps of metal. 15.37 Mike: Don't take risks like that with my work LOL
Next thing Alec needs to try is making his own Micarta knife scales from fabric and resin.
You are both artists at your own crafts don't put yourself down.
Alec, you're a good teacher.
Awesome work gentlemen!!!!!
Yes, that straight blade is very important! Just try sharpening a bent blade on a flat whetstone! (Referring to around minute 13 of the video.)
A full tang knife should have a tapered tang for balance. A knife that is handle heavy isn't as comfortable. I prefer to taper mine with the mill but A lot of people grind it. You should try it Alec I think you'll like the feel and it also has a nice look to it as well....more refined.
Bill Bussler Why taper it instead of just drilling or fullering it? Serious question.

Each to his own though but I think every maker ought to at least give all the different options a try to see what they like. The main point though really is just removing some of the handle weight.

Congrats on 666k subs! That's one *hell* of an achievement!
Had no idea that you two had done a collab, soooo need to see another one!
Brooooo this awesome! I also cant believe the blade was smoking from sanding!
Hey Alec, get yourself a radial arm drill. You will love it.
So glad I came across from mikes channel !!! Your awsome dude !!!!
I thought the blue dykem in the thumbnail was a blue handle scale. That sounds like a good project for Alec to integrate blue dykem into a final piece.
He is so good at everything he does
