  • Jay Kasai and Figueroa, dive into a provocative statement made by women's tennis world number one, Iga Swiatek. Iga boldly states that the true "big 3" of the tour are herself, Rybakina, and Sabalenka, omitting the third-ranked Coco Gauff. Lets weigh in on how accurate this statement is!

    Coco isn't new she's been on tour for over six years. Rybakina's is a better ball striker in my opinion. Only thing that might edge Gauff is speed and movement. But to me Iga got it right.

      Truth... and please don't make it about race. Gauff gas had a lot of hype and very little criticism since she's been 15. Still needs to fix her serve and forehand... especially to compete at that level. That's part of the job of her coach!

    Iga vs Aryna : 6-3
    Iga vs Elena : 2-4
    I get where Iga comes from.

    Althought not a fan of Swiatek, I can understand why she made that statement... presently, she " owns"
    Gauff. Of the other three players ( Rybakina, Swiatek and Sabalenka ) Rybakina is the best player.

  • @AC-ss5oy
    @AC-ss5oy Месяц назад +8

    I think Iga got it right. Gauff has largely been knocked out of tournaments earlier and is less of a threat than Rybakina and Sabalenka right now....that said, I think how she performs during the clay season will be largely telling and I think she will outperform people's expectations of her. I do think that we need to keep in mind that Coco is 2 years and 10 months younger than the youngest in the top 3 (Iga who will be 23 in May) , so it's a little unfair to expect Coco to be as dominant at this age because no one in the big 3 were dominant at 20, not even Iga.

Coco may become great champion but atm her game is not there ( yet?) or its some outside the court stuff that impact her game lately? - dont know. about Iga: she was asked & gave honest answer- its not deeper than this.

    On your show can you guys talk about tennis "kits" / outfits / clothes? This is trivial, but I appreciate good style. Today's kits look like shit. Almost all of them. It would be cool to go through the eras and iconic / classic kits for some of the top players through the years. McEnroe, Borg, Edberg, Becker, Lendl, Agassi, Sampras, Federer, Roddick, Novak, Nadal. For example, Nadal's kit for the first round in Madrid is sus, super sus. Come on, man. Is he playing in the WTA? Rublev's kit today? Tennis wear used to be so cool looking. Fed usually had a great look. What happened and when did it fall off? Also, it seems nobody wears the same outfit twice. It was kind of cool when, say, Mac had that signature Sergio Tacchini outfit for every match. Kind of like an actual uniform. The only guys with style now are maybe JJ Wolfe, maybe Ben Shelton.

    That's Brad Gilbert's job! His problem. I'm just making an observation and am not the only one that has similar observations.
    Even the commentators grudgingly agreed while good naturally throwing shade on the "big 3".
    BTW there are many other young players not that far behind. I wouldn't be surprised if 4 different players win the Grand Slam titles this year. Who could have seen Vondrusova winning Wimbledon last year and Krejickova winning the French Open a couple of years ago. Pegula is ranked #5 and has not made it past the quarters in a Major. Too be sure the rankings aren't always perfect but they're pretty accurate and subject to change. Rybakina got zero points for winning Wimbledon missing out on 2000 points. However all it did was delay her rise because her results were good afterwards.

    • @AC-ss5oy
      @AC-ss5oy Месяц назад

      Pegula is about to be 29 years old so she's pretty much close to retiring. Krejickova is 28 and was already a multi doubles champion and some of her best results came on clay so it wasnt that surprising and it was a pandemic year so the tour wasnt normal. Vondrousova was already a slam finalist but if we are being honest, Ons ran out of gas and Vondrousova had a much lighter draw. Not sure who you are seeing as the young guns climbing up the rankings (only Andreeva) but Coco, Zheng and Iga are really the only young guns in the top 20.

    I like Coco Gauff, but it has to be honestly said that her performance this season is unimpressive. This is not the same playing as at the US Open and in the pre-Grand Slam tournaments last year. I understand the coach's rule of playing ugly and winning, but you can't watch her matches. Iga, Saba and Ryba also don't play very well, but they play more solidly, which translates into the results. As for the first serve, some say that Coco is slowly becoming the infamous queen of double faults.
    As for the big three, the girls talking this season, not what happened in previous seasons. And if you look at the results of Iga, Rybakina and Sabalenka, they present the best results in this part of the season, which is reflected in the race ranking. Iga has 3x1000 and the United Cup final, two semi-finals, Rybakina has three wins, Saba AO and the final in Madrid. Before the tournament in Madrid, Sabalenka said that she did not think that she belonged to the Big Three, that now there were the Big Two (Świątek and Ryba), and after the final in Madrid she said that she was happy to be back among the three best tennis players of this season. The results this season speak for themselves, which is why Coco takes fourth place in the race.
    But this is not just her opinion. Cam Williams, a well-known youtuber from the USA, has a similar opinion and Andy Roddick has talked about it more than once in his recent podcasts, that the mentioned tennis players are in the most even form, and the rest of the girls are trying to catch up with them this season.

    Coco is not here just yet. She's better than the rest of the tour, but not the "big 3". The thing about big 3, is that they are not only better than everyone else but also putting up a fight against each other, and when we look at Coco's H2H with the rest:
    - Saba vs Gauff 3:4 (checks off)
    - Ryba vs Gauff 0:1 (so they only ever played 1 match and a close 3 setter on that, kinda hard to compare the rivalry)
    - Swiątek vs Gauff 9:1 (and here is the real deal - currently gauff is no threat to the no1, never have been and the matches are not that thrilling)
    So for me Coco has potential to join the group especially since she is a bit younger, but rn is rightfully not included. Give her time to prove herself, and we'll see in a few years how the WTA scene will look like.

    This Rybakina conversation is so interesting to me. I like her but lets compare numbers. She has only won ONE grand slam, the same as Coco. Sure, this year Rybakina has hit the ground running and having wonderful results, but very similar to Coco's summer of 2023.
    Rybakina has a more consistent serve than Coco, but Coco has better movement and net skills and leads the tour in return points won. In the 1 meeting between them, Coco has won. Also Coco leads Sabalenka in their head to head.
    Now, what I will say is Coco has to fix her serve and needs to be more aggressive. She is struggling to close out matches and sets and it is hindering her. Looks like she lost a lot of confidence after the Australian Open. I think she even questions her talent and abilities. If it clicks for her, she will be a threat to everybody!

    Iga being arrogant as usual. First off, she should be thankful Barry retired. Secondly rating playing based on the four months of the year or based on who can beat you is super lame. Cos Ostapenko beat Iga every single time and no one has discredited Iga for that. In the past one year Coco out performed Rybakina and earned her spot. Even before winning the USopen Rybakina tailed behind Pegula. There is no big 3 in women’s tennis right now. Sabalenka hasn’t been consistent since AO. having a good run in Madrid doesn’t make her consistent cos we have been watching every tournament this year.
