  • Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was an Italian violinist and composer, who, despite only composing six not especially large collections of music, all for strings, was an immensely influential for composers such as Vivaldi, Handel, Bach, Couperin - to name but a few. The collections comprise two sets each of twelve Sonate da Chiesa and Sonate da Camera, one of twelve Sonate a Violino e Violone o Cimbalo and twelve Concerti Grossi.
Here I am playing the first two movements of the ninth sonata for violin: a Preludio marked Largo followed, unusually for a second movement, by a Giga marked Allegro. In the Preludio I have largely kept to the solo-plus-accompaniment idea, using the Swell Oboe, which has necessitated some 'thumbing down' to assist the left hand, where stretches are otherwise too big. The Giga has brighter registration and the style doesn't warrant playing on more than one manual.
