I honestly had the best four months of my life abroad but that DOES NOT mean it was without struggle. I agree with Kiara that a lot of people hype it up (because it is amazing) but it’s also so difficult. Putting yourself out there in a completely different culture and having limited contact with your family and friends is HARD. My experience was also different than Kiara because I didn’t have a host Mom and I lived with 5 other girls which made adjusting sooooo much easier.
No, most people I know never have a nap during the week. Maybe it's more common in the south where there's a lot of unemployment. But it's NOT an everyday thing for most people
@UCmruhofxuKw3vwuvlhTE0Uw No, it's not stupid. You can be outside at lunchtime in Andalucia during fall, winter and spring without any problem. Yes, summers are hard, but a lot of people have AC and napping has nothing to do with the weather. If you have to work at 4, you can't nap. I said maybe in the south, where there's more unemployment. Maybe. And you can't deny the high unemployment due to how much everything depends on tourism, European subsidies and a more socialist culture. I didn't say people don't want to work and they have a nap. I just described the reality. The rest of the country works and doesn't have naps during the week. Except, of course, civil servants with a 8-3 schedule. The rest of us work at lunchtime and can't afford to sleep at lunchtime. The summer in Madrid is terrible too and people don't nap
Alicia M it’s not because there’s a lot of unemployment just in the south of spain, that’s just stupid, people stay inside because of the high temperature in the middle of the day, specially during summer.
S/o to you for being honest about your trip... I was just talking to a friend the other day about how much we all glorify traveling even though it has its ups and downs and isn’t always all glamorous
I really understand where you are coming from and what you are talking about. I myself went to Spain for a full year (I'm from Norway so not as far away as traveling from the US but still) and I can honestly say that it took me about six months to actually get to a point where I preferred Spain over home. I was fortunate enough to find a group of friends who were all from England and who ended up being my family while I was there. Having them really made a difference in my stay and I'm almost positive I wouldn't have lasted a full year if I hadn't met them.
Hey girl! I studied abroad in France this summer for 2 months and had a very similar experience in terms of having a difficult time adjusting. At week 5, I became super homesick and wanted to leave but I learned so much about myself in the process and honestly transformed as a human being because of the opportunities I was given. There is a lot of romanticism about studying abroad and not many realize how difficult it can be emotionally, but it’s so worth it because you’re growing and becoming a more independent person! Cheers to our personal experiences and discovering new cultures while making the coolest friends!
Sometimes traveling can be kind of lonely. I remember when I traveled to Romania for three weeks. I loved it but on the other hand I was homesick and I literally kissed America (The ground) when I returned home.
Loved your video! Right now I'm in Finland for a study abroad semester :) For me, this is also the biggest step out of my comfort-zone ever, but I truly believe that this will change me and make me more confident in everything I do, and I really hope you felt this way too after your study abroad! What you said about "missing" your own school is so true! It's like I'm having school-fomo right now, even tho I am going to school here in Finland. :) Greetings from Finland :)
I feel you on this 100%! I studied abroad the entire spring semester, and everyone told me the same things about how amazing the experience is but my experience was far from perfect, and one of the most difficult times for myself personally. Still don't regret it at all and it changed my life in a way I didn't expect!
I truly respect the realness of this comment. This is something that I see from kids I work with, which is one of the reasons I try to keep expectations positive but realistic for them. One of the things they are often not prepared for is the emotional aspect of SA, among other things. Glad you don't regret it, but also nice to see you have objective outtakes on your semester away. Be well - K.
Furthest I've ever traveled was to Amsterdam, Netherlads this past summer while I was studying abroad in Paris, France! I'm so sorry to hear that your study abroad experience wasn't everything it was hyped up to be, but I totally get it. It's so much harder than most people think, especially when the culture is so different than your own. Love you and your videos, girlie and keep doing you!
The furthest place I ever travelled to was Spain, but it's only a 3 hour flight from The Netherlands so not that far. I studied in England for 4 months and I absolutely loved my time there. It really depends on the people you meet there and the people you have at home. ♡
Adelaide, South Australia from Ontario Canada 😊🌊 I also went to study abroad for a semester and can totally relate to what you have to say about your experience. I’ve been home for a year and a half now and I am even more grateful for the experience now, the people I met, and the lessons I learned, than I have ever been. I think that anyone who has ever studied abroad holds a special place in their heart for that time in their life ❤️ Enjoy and safe travels coming home!
I definitely agree with you about study abroad being hyped up. I loved it but it was also much different than how I thought it would be just from seeing everyone else's instagram pics when they went. I still loved it like you said but it is definitely a different experience than I thought it would be. Hope you had so much fun!
I now watch this video in a completely different light after watch your Instagram live video! Thank you for being honest and transparent yesterday and for posting this video at the time
When I travelled abroad to study english the firsts days were really rough. My mental health was not great, but I started to get into the routine and it became better. At the end I didn't want to go back and would totally recommend it. Every student has to decide if they think travelling abroad is something for them and if you do, embrace your experience even if you didn't like it, you'll come back knowing more about yourself and knowing is not for you.
Uhh I’ve been to Australia and new zeeland. Um and I am from Germany so I guess America is kinda far but Australia has been the farthest ❤️ love your honesty i can totally agree. It’s up to everybody individually. For me the beginnings are always the hardest as soon as you get into a routine I feel like it gets a little easier. Great job (again obviously) ✨
Study abroad can be hyped but everyone has a different experience. For me, it was 100% the most amazing time in my life and it was life-changing. Being with a host family isn’t quite as fun I think as being in a university environment. I went to the University of Exeter in England for the summer and while I got to take classes, I got to explore and met people that I’ll talk to forever. After coming back, I wanted nothing more than to go back. I’m sorry your experience wasn’t all that you expected it to be though.
the farthest i’ve ever traveled is Europe!! i had the best time of my life! i’m still in highschool so i went with my parents but i’ve also been to Washington, d.c., Hawaii and our next trip is coming up this thanksgiving, we are going to New York and we live in California!!
I studied abroad in the Baltic’s (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) in the beginning of July for two weeks. The thing for me is that I am an online student at Arizona State University, so studying abroad was great because I could meet some of my classmates. Although I had to write a 20 page essay when I got home, but I loved every second of it. I would recommend doing it through the school because you are there with students from your school and there are faculty members on your trip (that you can use for recommendation if you need them for grad school). Ps the farthest place I’ve been is Estonia. I live in California, so it was a 10 hour difference with a 3 leg flight, and an 11 hour flight from London to LA.
I'm from Madrid, Spain And the farthest place I've ever been is San Diego. I went there for 3 weeks in an exchange program when I was 16 with my high school And it was AMAZING!! 😍😍 I loved it And I love USA And I can't wait to go and visit so many other places 😍😍😍
The farthest place I've ever traveled is Martinique (a small island in the caribbeans) from eastern Canada! I'm glad you got to experience Spain and study abroad even though you might not have been the most comfortable. You must have learned so many things about yourself and the world around you!
It feels so wrong when I don’t comment. I’m late, but the furthest place I’ve travelled is from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 to the UK 🇬🇧. It was 19hrs, with a 5hrs layover.
Hi! I just wanted to say that Cadiz is a city in Spain that is kind of for older people, unless it is summer time. Maybe that is why you abroad experience has been different
Vancouver would be the farthest place I've been to, obviously from Singapore! But the place I've spent the longest duration abroad is actually in Maastricht, Netherlands, for a whole semester. And that was by far one of the best times in my life for a whole host of different reasons :) Asian countries have vastly different "home" experiences so the "away" experience is definitely super different from yours!
I appreciate the honesty about your experience with going abroad, super cool and helpful! And Vatican City is the farthest I've traveled so far, definitely would recommend a trip to Italy. It's beautiful out there :)
Is so cool, because I'm puertorican, so we have to know both languages: English and Spanish. I'm in third year of college and I want to study a semester in Spain. But is really hard to me the fact to leave my family and island. But you really inspire me to do it. Thanks a lot for being such an wonderful person!
I finished my chemistry undergrad in Denmark! Now I’m starting grad school there, but I’m another city. I’m very nervous about making friends, but I’m gonna try to just talk to people :)
The furthest place I’ve ever travelled to was to Beijing China from the Netherlands. It was also sort of for a study abroad but I was a high school student then😄 loved the video! Hope you have a great day/night✨💫
I'm from Argentina (south america) and some years ago I did the same kind of program you are doing and I traveled to USA (Texas, Virginia and Washington) It was a cool experience.
The furthest place I've ever been to is Norway from London and the weather was amazing if you like snow :) (and thank you for always replying to my comments!)
The farthest I’ve been from Boston is Åland during a summer I spent in Stockholm. I feel like study abroad is so different for everyone and it really depends on where you go and what kind of program you do.
Kiara! Question! I know this might be a silly question but how do you fit your hydro in your kanken? I have the same size backpack and same size hydro and my hydro won’t fit :(
I got the chance to go to France (Paris and the region of Normandy) in high school and it was so amazing, but the 10 day trip was plenty for me at that point.
I guess it really depends on a lot of different factors what your experience is like. I went to seville for a month last year. In the beginning it was quite hard, but i stayed in residence and after 2 weeks i got this amazing roommate who is now still one of my best Friends and met a cool group of people who we hung out with almost every night and we all went sightseeing together and there were weekendtrips organized by the school and all that. I guess its easier to become close with people in a residence building as well. (CLIC international house Sevilla)
It was also quite the challenge for me tho, im always super homesick and never went abroad alone so those four weeks in my gap year were super helpful before i left for uni
The farthest I’ve ever travelled is Cambodia and Malaysia! I literally just got back last Friday from the most amazing trip with my Mom, and it was an at least 27 hour travel day.
Hello Kiara! I don't know if you are still answering comments on this video, but i was wondering if there are any apps that you reccommend for health and fitness? Im trying to get more productive and healthy in food choices and weight gain, and I was wondering if you knew of any apps that could help with that. I love your videos!! 💕
Farthest: DEFINITELY Spain as well😂 (Barcelona specifically) I’m right there with you on study abroad... I’m glad i did my two week program because everyone’s experiences are different and I wouldn’t have been able to do a whole semester
I honestly had the best four months of my life abroad but that DOES NOT mean it was without struggle. I agree with Kiara that a lot of people hype it up (because it is amazing) but it’s also so difficult. what program did you go with ?
The whole country naps every day? I knew I was born in the wrong country.
Yes we do! Hahaha
