Yeah Mojo !! An L-39 and now a Citation II. When I was getting my ticket in the early 80's, the Citation line was the family station wagon of the air. Not the fastest, not the highest flying, but those straight wings gave it wonderful lift at low speeds. She is a beautiful bird. Thank you Mike for this great tour / vid.
it's a nice plane but the cost benefit has to be taken into account. maintenance expenses and cost per flight hour are quite high. there is no miracle.
I knew a couple that owned a Citation and that was how they made their living up until their retirement. They owned the plane and rented it out and did charter flights with it, great planes for small ma and pa charter business and inexpensive to work on compared to some of the other jets in it size range.
The problem with older jets is that when the engine overhauls are due they are totaled. It will cost $800k to overhaul them and the plane won’t be worth $800k when done. Basically these old jets are worth whatever time is left on the engines until overhaul.
The new single pilot jets are so much easier to fly with FADEC engines. I have seen Lear 24s for $200,000. Not single pilot though. I would go for a fast experimental.
The single biggest factor on determining price on an airplane is time on the engines. And how much time or cycles remain before maintenance or replacement is needed. What makes the aircraft so relatively low priced is that it has old, thirsty high time engines that are getting harder to find parts for. And the avionics are dated. What this aircraft is a candidate for is a rejuvenation. New interior, avionics and some new Williams turbofans and it is set for another 30 years of service. You will get an airplane with nearly the same capability as a new build for about half the price.
I was thinking the same thing. But frankly, there are MUCH better examples of a Citation 2 for less than $1M. This jet needs gutted and completely rebuilt. I'd say $600k is fair.
For me in the end 70's/early 80's of the last century the dreams of business aviation. How often I flew with them in my dreams. Of course, one could not afford such a thing.
This Cessna is my favorite and what you are doing is my dream. Develope the civil aviation with Aircrafts made in Cameroon 🇨🇲, made in Africa. I will like that you should be our mentor.
Were those ashtrays in the cockpit next to the headphone jacks? Hard to believe nowadays, but there was actually a time when flying commercial that the person sitting next to you could just fire up a cig and puff away...ashtrays in the lav too!
i guess these older jets are now cheaper than anything else with jet engines. 20 years ago I was told there were no 1 million dollar jets by my flight instructor. Must be the market pressure of the newer 3--5 million dollar ones that has driven them down this much.
That's not what it is .#1 these old jets are a money pit ,and parts are sometimes hard to come by and extremely expensive. #2 the banks refuse to finance jets over 20 years old .This airplane would cost the owner a ton of money to stay airworthy .The maintenance, and timed out parts that must be replaced never ends.
Hi mike, i heard there is one aviation company buy this plane and recondition everything up to 70% of every thing and optimize some systems, abd sell plane as brand new plane is that right?
For the person who said burning 200 lbs of fuel an hour...pending altitude and airspeed. Have to do the math ....200lbs ÷ 6.7 or 7 lbs us gal ambient temperature applies here. Approx...30 gals an hour not too bad...duh...
I'll take this over a vision jet though. For less than a mil you're rock and rolling for at least 5 years, and then get it off your books for the same price you paid for it.
@@mojogrip i get the logic completely. Operation costs is what I was thinking about but once you factor in the depreciation you will see on the vision jet this is the better choice. For now both are out of my world I am still debating Malibu, sr22, bonanza, kerosene aint happening until 2025 or so. At which point the debate maybe turboprop singles vs vision jet vs late model single pilot light jet or mustang.
Hi Mike, thanks for the videos they are great, I have a question about high TT aircraft particularly turbo props which I am interested in. You did a video on 5 of them and one in particular caught my attention, the Merlin III. All these aircraft are going to have high hours 5000 - 8000 plus so aside from the cost of maintenance on engines which you would have to cover anyway, what is the cost on on air frames like? Does the airframe eventually fatigue so much that it is unstable and too flexible? What are your thoughts on this? Thanks Craig
It looks great...but its a money pit ,l garrentee you. This is why you can by these old airplanes cheap .When you have to start writing checks for timed out parts and maintenance on this airplane then you will understand what time it is .Most of the banks refuse to finance jets over 20 years old ,because they already know what time it is.
Even a rich man can't afford a million dollar jet ... You get even less than you pay for ... Probably pay that much in maintenance in the first couple of years. That's assuming the engines don't need to be replaced.
$360 / hour for 200 gallons? The flying world wishes it could buy aviation fuel for $1.80 /gallon. Figure $4.50-$5.00 /gallon. $950-$1000 an hour just for fuel.. Flying this thing is probably close to $2500/ hour. If not more. Still a great way to travel.
Still better than $20k first class on flagship airlines flying 6 hours, they pretend to rent an apartment suite in the air for several hours, while this aircraft owner actually owns that entire apartment to himself
@@davem5333 you are correct. And those numbers are even higher when you have to account to pilot feets and housing. I asked a pilot who's licensed for private jet. He sent me a link to site that calcuates everything! basically just to fly 200 hours, it's $410k.
@@wizetezie not really. You never justify a jet for personal usage. I worked for a company that owned a learjet. I used to ask the owner how much it cost him to run the jet, hed say an arm and leg. But he said, if I had to pay out if pocket for this jet I'd never get it. It's a toy you dont really need but want and you wind up paying more than what the jet cost in the long run on maintenance, fuel, upkeep, major overhaul, updates and pilot salories.
I think it looks pretty good, maybe clean or replace floor carpet. You can go crazy with these things. I saw some pretty amazing custom interiors at Oshkosh. An early Cirrus SR22 that looked better than a brand new one. The interior similar to what you will see in a new Porsche or Range Rover.
MIKE - Please, you have GOT to check some basic facts against online aircraft performance databases (to save yourself from saying some very basic mistakes). Try risingup dot com, or simply search for "Aircraft performance database"... FYI - early citations burned about 160 GPH PER SIDE at cruise. If you were burning 200 gallons TOTAL, then you had it pulled WAY back on power settings. NBAA IFR range is 1064 nm, cruise is 348 knots
Actually I don't. I just flew the plane on the right side and I spoke to the PIC through the entire flight to get those "basic facts". Just because risingup has a general database doesnt mean this is the case for every single aircraft 😊
@@mojogrip the internet can provide basic facts with about 60 seconds of searching.... it would be a double WIN.
