Music industry is just like any industry: standardization, mass production, low risk taking, profit margins, cost cutting. When you have that environment, no creativity is left to survive.

'Repressive Desublimation'... A guy named Herbert Marcuse (and others) wrote about it 60 years ago. It's inevitable, with late-stage capitalism, that "art" gets eaten by "commodity".
The businessmen begin by buying the art, from artists, and selling it to others -- taking profit in the exchange. But, they soon figure out that there's more money in just making the 'art' themselves... and defining, for their consumers, what art IS.
(The music industry is different in that their product doesn't have an objective utility.. which you WOULD use to, objectively, determine market value... 'What is a stream worth?')

Well one thing i can say i dont let peoples views dictate how i feel anymore so ill say this . I can still hum my first piano sequence note for note , when id hear certain tunes or melodies , it would hit me like a ton of bricks , J dilla used to have me sobbing in the car ect. I dont care what anyone says but I AM the one of last of dying breed . And im so humble i swear i dont like talking big i just let my listeners say what they say , and ive heard all sorts of kind things on how it sounds and descriptive it is , but i quit tryna get signed , the industry itself can kiss my ass but i love music so much i still do it and only sold about 4 beats and beat tape , cuz im not in it for the money , i love to see people being inspired. I mean you can hardly go to a concert now and feel satisfied because its nothing but a strip club or kick back on stage, todays musical demographic is not relative to todays crippled people, making music that to me sounds like its making fun of people for not spending big and shaking your ass , when its a lot of introverts who just wanna chill. Every song on the radio is compressed to high heaven , every voice sounds like a carbon copy of T pain and i swear with the exception of a few things hear and there i find on my own , my era of great music 2014 on back . People forget when Kendrick was first getting a bit popular it was so many dope young artists that made relative Quality hip hop , Big Krit , Mac Miller , Earl Sweatshirt, Joey Badass ect . Now that theyre doing there thing, they passed the torch and these new artists have dropped it. But i sound NOTHING like todays crap and i wont even try . Anybody can throw some 808s and hats on some shit .

I don't know what everyone else is doing, but It's definitely not me, haha.
I think the quality of music is suffering the most in the American market, which makes a huge impact, globally. There have been so many great moments in Hip-Hop this year, but people in this country are not only saying it's dying, but that it is dead, as of 2024. While this couldn't be further from the truth, most industries are suffering... especially the music business.
I think a lot of it is a result of streaming platforms, which are finally beginning to collapse. Music is too universally abstract to compartmentalize the way that the record labels have, but if you are not out there performing, directly in front of an audience, you are not properly distributing your music. The distribution method is everything. Without that, there is no soul. Direct to "consumer" is the way. Most importantly, the direct interaction is essential.
So many artists are not making music to put in front of the people, and you need that experience as an artist, in order to move forward. Whether it be in front of 5 people or 50, there is nothing that will shape the soul of your music more than that interaction...no matter how many followers you have online.

I've been finding amazing bands and songs recently made. They are as wonderful as older musics I listened.
It requires a lot of time to find those new bands and songs.
I think the problem is that we have so many new songs released all the time, combined with algorithms that give us the music that are popular and not necessary a music for the listener that we get tired of searching.
I'm happy with technology because it allows me to create my own music. However, I still study music theory, don't try to release song without a feeling about it, without putting my art on it. I don't want to be famous, I love music so much in a point that I want to create my own. It wouldn't be possible to be that without that technology that make all this accessible.

Being a “Musician” has taking a back seat to puzzling together sounds for many. And I’m not talking about back in days, producers creatively chopping and using samples . I’m talking People with laptops putting together splice loops, creating a catchy 15sec social media clip, rinse and repeat … Hip Hop is REALLY at a low point. Most my circle listens to more UK rap, afrobeats and reggaeton over whatever is calling its self hip hop nowadays 😢

Most bands were shitty back in the day. One of the main differences is that we never heard 99% of them. Most bands didn't show up on your radar screen unless a) they were special from the get-go, or b) they kept working at it until they became good enough to attract an audience. I think that's one factor. The other, which Dyreck points out, is related to the means of production. But, as others have pointed out, it's not just that technology lets us do what we might not be able to do without it. In the 90s, I used to do video art and video and sound design for "experimental" dance and theater groups. As soon as I got the gear that would let me move away from tape (video and audio), my productivity went down and nearly everything I made seemed to lack aliveness. At the time, there wasn't much chatter yet about the downside of having so many options and of being able to make things perfect/tight, but I always had a sneaking sense that this had something to do with what I was experiencing. So much magic, from almost unnoticeable to revelatory, can come from constantly bumping up against technological limitations and imperfections. Unfortunately, the genie's out of the box. I don't think you can ever recreate that even if you self-set limitations...

  • @poofygoof
    @poofygoof 3 месяца назад +1

Nothing's getting "taken away." If you want to do things the hard way, you still can. It's easier to produce sh*tty low-effort music now than it was before, and the existing corporate ghouls who have everybody convinced they are the only distribution mechanism are more than happy to take your money and add music to the pile.
Technology is reducing the signal to noise ratio for audible content being produced, but that means we need more labels to serve as editors. The current centralization of the industry doesn't scale; it made some sense when production was difficult, and A&R actually recognized and developed talent, but that seems rare these days.

Very few, and I mean very few folks still out there making music with that old analog gear that we all know and love. when music is no longer played by real live musicians , it's no longer music. simple formula. what you're confusing is marketing with music forms. Maybe not intentionally confusing but choosing samples from people who put their music on record, is not music, it's theft repurposed. People like Bob James were smart as they knew they could stay relevant in the public mind and make a profit while allowing people to sample their works but it does nothing to progress music to re-tread the tires with generic fill. I bought heavily into the marketing of rap and electronic in my teens but I clearly understand the difference to what music on the records they sampled from, and what the modern result is - one is timeless classics the other robotic landfill limited time hangout party sounds.

But it's hard to beat the late '80s for shitty music when everything was either Stock Aitken Waterman pop or shitty rock with all those power ballads or hip hop with all those skits. It takes a bunch of people to make truly awesome music. From the musicians to the engineering and mixing, even though one person can theoretically produce everything themselves with today's technology, it will not be done well because one person cannot do everything well. It takes years to learn about audio engineering, sorry a plug-in ain't going to do it all for you, your music will lack the depth that a human being who has practiced for years and puts their heart and soul into the music. Sequencer based music is also part of the problem as it lacks the imperfections of human timing which makes it sound stale, boring and repetitive. Trap music.
