I was so happy when my buddy Greg Phillinganes surprised me by jumping into the ARP Foundation Booth in the middle of my talk at NAMM 2024. I'm always ready to turn on a dime and adapt when the unexpected happens, especially when the unexpected means Greg is bringing a wave of energy my way. I'm confident you'll be very pleased if you stick around for this entire video. It's a rare opportunity to receive a first hand demonstration about how to play a synthesizer keyboard from a master who is most likely the most heard keyboard player in the world. Greg lays out definable things that make his parts funky, the role of "good taste" when playing fills, picking your moments for parts to enter and go away, single trigger keyboard technique, trills, palm slides, ribbon pitch bends and more....so glad to spread the joy that illuminates from this one-of-kind musician and beautiful person!

ABOUT ANTHONY
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns , Internal Affairs , The Man From Elysian Fields , 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles , been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller .
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones , Jack Nitzsche , Lamont Dozier , Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

Greg Phillinganes is one of my favorite keyboard players, I've followed him throughout his career with Stevie, Anita Baker, Donald Fagen, and Michael Jackson, just to name a few. You are very convincing. I shall heed the lessons of ebony, ivory and the mighty 2600. I've wanted to learn proper patching on a virtual classic synth and this is the catalyst to start this new phase of my sonic legacy. I studied under the tiny screens and convoluted user manuals from the mighty Roland and now shall put my skills to the test. 🙏

In the 80's I had subscriptions to every singe music magazine like Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Rolling Stone and I was always reading to pick up tips on how the musicians played and came up with those great songs. Thanks for your channel it takes me all the way back to those times and I am still just excited to learn new things as I was back then when I had more hair.🎹🎹🎶🎶🎵

Two universes of music in the starry sky tell us about their illuminating abilities to bring music to life with soul and spirit. Abilities that seem superhuman seem unattainable. But on the contrary, the two beacons are so close to the people, open and humane, which is why they are true superstars for so many without any airs or role models. If all people with extraordinary talents were so open to sharing their knowledge, it is hard to imagine what potential PEOPLE COULD HAVE TOGETHER and NOT AGAINST EACH OTHER!!! I would be insanely jelly I missed the raffle if I hadn’t just bought a 2600M recently. It reminded me, though, that I promised Dina a donation to the foundation when I bought one because there isn’t any licensing fees transferred on new Korg ARP gear back to the ARP Foundation.

Thanks, Anthony - another great video, and it is especially so for people just learning this stuff. I wish I had the kind of resources you're supplying on this channel back in the day, when I was healthy and just learning about synths (Buchla 100-series modular and ARP 2500 and 2600 being my first ones). You're always driving home key lessons that used to take people years to figure out, unless one found, like Greg, miracle teachers like Stevie Wonder.
This is so great to be able to watch and listen to people like you who were the hidden heroes behind the music that shaped our lives when we were teenagers and young adults. Back then we were focused on the main star, and gave very little attention and credits to all the other people involved in the music we listened to. Thank you for taking the time to make these incredible videos Anthony.
I really appreciate that you're doing this and 'getting back the band together' so to speak. I'm just a general music listener and a consumer for so many years and getting to watch you work and seeing the magic behind it and how it really was magic, and how so much of the sound design/performance is taken for granted. It's been a genuine treat to watch what you did and hearing the story behind it and the ways it was done.
Right on Anthony, thanks for sharing this! I've never met Greg but he comes off like such a positive life force and he's such an amazing player. He's great to watch in the Spectrasonics videos.

I had the pleasure of seeing Michael Jackson live twice and Greg Phillinganes with him once. We viewers owe you our gratitude for having a look into the kitchen. Everytime I watch I learn something and it's not just about music... it's about friendship, mutual respect and magical chemistry! Didn't you meet Mr. Wonder? He was there. I saw a video of him visiting the SWAM booth.

The term that you are looking for in order to describe the articulation is "slurring" the note from one to the other without tonguing again.

Single/multi trigger is a feature on the later 3620 ARP 2600 keyboard. Don't think it was around when Maybe Your Baby was cut. Wonder if TONTO was modded or if that one was just done with Moog components? Very cool to hear Greg work it out on Stevie bass stuff, and thank you for bringing up the trill Anthony!

I cannot find the recreation thriller video for the life of me. All I find is shorts. If you promote these types of videos please link them in the description. Just waisted an hour and even searched re creating thriller with your name and Greg’s and still couldn’t find it.
