  • The fairbuds XL from fairphone are a new set of noise cancelling bluetooth headphones with a big difference.
They are designed to be 100% user serviceable with gasp a user-replaceable battery.
They are manufactured ethically and sustainably, but do they sound any good?

I’m definitely interested in picking a pair of these up but whenever I hear about them companies like Fairphone always sound like a BIT of a double edged sword because yes, if the company continues to stay around and manufacture replacement parts they are fully repairable down the line, but if they go bankrupt they may no longer be able to provide those service parts.
In those cases, I wonder if the companies would make the parts open source or provide some way for the community to manufacture themselves…

      Good point
Fairphone have been around for a while though, so I hope they stick around!

I definitely hope so too! I think both them and Framework have definitely made the right early steps in establishing themselves in the market, it just always makes me wonder what the redundancy plan would be for end users if they did have to pull the plug.

Fairphone has released circuit diagrams and schematics for the fairphone 4. They seem committed to keeping that up, even though some bootstrap circuits from manufacturers don't allow it. I think fairphone wouldn't be holding back to open source at least some parts of the headphones, but as always with companies, one can never be certain

the open source argument is very crucial

Welcome back. Are those the IE 600s at the back? Would love to hear your thoughts on them.

Thank you, got them before watching your video.
I had SONY WF1000x--MX4 phones where the battery died and Sony's repair guys demanded the same price for replacing two headphones as it would cost brand new with loading case ...
Long story short, I'm glad I made the compromise of buying a replacement with changeable parts 🙂Goodbye Sony, you lost me as a customer.

I only ever bought one pair of earbuds and the 2 year l got out of them feels too short.
For a while I've been meaning to replace both my 10 year old Logitech G430 headset and those mostly dead earbuds.
I didn't believe it when I first heard about these headphones, as I had been waiting for something like this for a while.
However, the poor sound quality for instruments and vocals etc might be a deal breaker for me as I like classical music quite a bit.
    Really sad.

thank you for this comment. I'm definently going to buy these headphones for it's longevity and because of it's enviourmental impact. I also am a music lover. The headphones could rather be used to listen to audio for practical purposes. After getting these I'll be getting a big thick high quality stereo set for leisure.

I too had a pair of G430s and they lasted me forever. They still work I just wanted something higher end after 8 years. I really wanted these to be good but low upper mid range sounds like a bad time to me.

I respect Fairphone and Fairbuds, but I cannot support them because they cannot ethically ship their products to US.

"ethically" or at all? Because they don't even try to ship to the US as far as I can tell.
