  • Athleisure is one of the fastest-growing and evolving clothing categories we've seen in the last 15 years. Done right, it can be one of the smartest clothing categories, consisting of outfits that are sporty, put-together, and comfortable.
Done wrong...well, you look like a schluptadink who is on her way to join others in Frumpsville.
Don't add to the population of FRUMPSVILLE!! Just make sure you aren't making these mistakes with your athleisure outfits! Kelly from Adore Your Wardrobe will give you a masterclass in athleisure. You'll learn its origins, its definition, what (and isn't) considered athleisure, and the items she recommends to the students of her course. By the end, the 20-year-olds will be asking you where you got your shoes.

Addidas & track suits first came on the scene in the 70s. I remember all the jocks at my school wearing them. Leggings got big in the 80s & haven't gone away. I do not wear them as pants but do wear them & bike shorts as layering pieces under a dress in lieu of a slip (my workout leggings are only worn to work out) I am home most of the time & wear light weight silky joggers with matching tops. It looks like a jumpsuit when worn together but is not as inconvenient. (I used to really like harem pants & joggers have a similar silhouette) For painting, gardening, doing dirty jobs, I have some tees & sweat pants that I only wear for those tasks. Any tee shirt that gets stained gets added to the pile.

If I don't workout in it I don't want it in my athliesire wardrobe. I want athliesire clothes so I can wear one outfit from my morning walk, morning activities with the kids, and the gym. Then I will shower at the gym and dress, but I need two outfits a day, I can't change more than twice a day.

I have a drawer in the garage with my “painting clothes”, worn only a few times per year (a summer and a winter “outfit”). I only wear them for the messiest jobs, like touch-up painting, because I don’t care if I get more paint, stains or rips in them. No way would I ever be seen outside the house in them! I don’t have any in-betweens, everything else in my daily wardrobe, is proper, outside-appropriate day clothing. I don’t want to ruin my everyday life by wearing that really grubby, worn-out, too-big stuff in my painting clothes drawer. Nor do I wear old tees as sleepwear. “Comfort” includes the feeling of looking well-put together and stylish too, and it’s perfectly possible to get all the physical comfort needed in non-athleisure outfits. I know I need that mental, as well as physical comfort, once wearing a too low-cut top ruined my whole day, a mistake I never repeated, I check and choose them much more carefully now.

I actually don’t like most athleisure clothes because I can’t wear synthetic fibers and this category is dominated by polyester and other synthetics. But, yes, I do find a very few natural-fiber items. I’m wearing an ivory cashmere leggings and sweater set, over an ivory silk, long-sleeved tee, my natural-fiber take on this “category”. I usually don’t wear this casual of an outfit in daily wear, but last night I had to get an MRI, so I wore this comfy, metal-free, outfit with a light-neutral blazer and suede slip-on shoes, then just put it back on until I shower and change this morning. I got several compliments on my outfit at the hospital last night, I think the blazer and the tonal look made the difference. (Yes, they do run those expensive scanners in the evenings, weekends, etc., to recoup some of their huge purchase prices. I didn’t have a choice of time, but it was ok, even though it was a Friday night). I like wearing proper day clothes at home every day, the only thing I leave off is the bra! I learned in the first two months of the pandemic lockdown that I got depressed wearing all that athletic, baggy stuff all the time and went back to proper day clothing. Plus, I’m just so much more comfortable in dresses and skirts, I’m never really comfortable in pants. I’m at home so much now that I’m retired that if I don’t wear my nice-fabric items, accessories, etc., there, I rarely ever will. I believe in fully wearing and enjoying all my “best things”, so that means at home, too.

Great video ! Many of us had gotten lazy, I got rid of a few pieces and added more denim jeans instead. Now I only have 3 pair of lululemon leggings and 1 lounge set. I feel alot more put together ❤️
Your denim video helped so much. I found the right cut for my body type. Thank you!

I started buying flare bottom yoga pants (thick fabric but not necessarily Ponte) a few years ago (at Costco) for the very reason that I could wear them before or after doing grocery shopping. Thank you for the tips on the other clothing items.
