- Use this video to help you replace and install an individual key for a Lenovo Ideapad laptop computer. Be careful of the Retainer Clip so as not to break them. They can be difficult to find for sale. If needed, consider purchasing a keyboard and taking keys off as needed. FAQ's:
Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. Whats wrong?
A: If the key assembly is not installing correctly, its either due to a component being damaged and needing to be replaced or a component not being orientated correctly. I would disassemble the key as seen here in this video and inspect for damage. If there is no damage, install the key. If there is damage, replace the key. Would you like help locating a key? If so, what is the brand and model for your computer?
Q: The Retainer Clip is not staying down on the Keyboard.
A: If the Retainer Clip is not fitting into place, there are a few possible reasons. The Retainer Clip could be damaged and not able to fit in correctly. The Retainer Clip may not be assembled correctly or not orientated correctly. Or the the metal pins on the Keyboard are damaged or bent out of place and not able to fasten the Retainer Clip down properly.
Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any components are broken, you may have to replace them. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
A: Unfortunately they do come apart sometimes :( You can see how to put them back together in the last half of this video: • How To Fix Dell Laptop...
Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
A: There isnt really a good way to reattach the Rubber Springs. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.
Q: The Hinge Clip came off with the Key Cap. What do I do?
A: Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool. - Наука

I had the Q key stop working during the middle of a 48 hour game jam (48 hours to make a video game), Took it off to try and fix it, but because of the time stress I had to just put it off. Now that its over, I googled, found this video and in seconds everything is perfect! Thank you

thank you for sharing this! i just thought i broke my one of my keys, but your video made it super easy to fix.
Great video! Concise & to the point 👍I was afraid I'd snap the plastic thing you mentioned, but I didn't. However, I broke a plastic hook that's part of the key lol I'm glad I was able to fix this myself.
Great to hear !! Always here to help :):)
You, sir, are a lifesaver. As with a lot of people, money is pretty tight, so I can't just buy a new keyboard...not to mention you say that doing that weakens the computer. Luckily, the little plastic tabs on the white thing weren't broken, so I could put it back together....after a while. I was born with tremors so doing little handiwork like this is really difficult for me. But...I managed to get my key back on.
The whole mess started because I accidentally got...something in the cracks of the key. So, I pried it off...and thought I broke it. Luckily, your video saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks for the video.

I broke one of the plastic things and the key is slightly leaning forwards now. But from all the keys I removed and clean, only one mistake was actually pretty good for a first time! So satisfying to clean the keyboard btw, do recommend :)

I couldn't press one of my keys properly anymore. But I also didn't want to break my Notebook Keyboard.
Thanks to your Video I was able to remove the key, clean up and put it back together - as good as new now!

Thanks so much for your video. You explain things clearly it makes sense now. My shift key cap cracked in half and I superglued it, but it won't fit now. I did figure out how to remove and replace the retainer clip. I guess I need to buy a new cap because mine is not fitting back after the superglue job.
Ya, those keys are very touchy. Very tightly fitted with no room for error. The key cap may just no longer be able to fit back :(
hey from where did u got the retainer clip
Thank you so much! I had grit under one of my keys (turned out to be a bit of mechanical pencil lead) that was making it feel weird and not always register, got it out, this is such a relief. When I popped it out, the inner part of the retainer clip came with the keycap (mine is shaped as bit different and i didn't know where the edge was to hold it down) and I screamed at each click, I fully thought I'd broken it but I popped them back together and everything is fine :) It probably would've been funny to watch :P

I got pissed off at trying to put back the rightmost side + key, I just effin smashed that laptop into the floor and made an insurance claim.
Thank you sir for the knowledge passed. There was a tiny particle stuck in my f3 key, so I removed the key thinking it would be easy to put back like my previous dell laptop. I started panicking when I was unable to fix it back, then I decided to RUclips it and your video came up. Thanks

I put off trying to fix a key that annoyed me for two years, and I likely would have struggled with it further was it not for this video. I first bought the wrong key replacement because there are so many Lenovo devices with similar model numbers and names. Luckily this was a cheap mistake, and the second time I bought the right replacement and was able to get it installed in about five minutes. So it can be done. Thanks again.

I accidet removed the white thingy how do I fix them
same
thanks for the tutorial. a suggestion for future improvements, your camera angle was such that your hand got in the way of what you were doing when you removed the key initially, and also to some extent when removing the white piece beneath. I think you just slipped the screw driver beneath the middle of the key but I can't tell for sure.
A ton of help! But be careful, I thought I broke my F2 Key but in the end I managed to repair it by removing the pencil tip from the inside.

The physical actions of pushing the metal clips into the tabs was not shown very well but we could sort of imagine what you were doing based on the explanation so it still helped. In the future you may want to put the viewers need to learn slightly above your physical comfort while taking the action. I just don't know how else to say it without sounding rude. Really appreciate the video.
Every keyboard is different and every hinge clip is different. Im my opinion, very little can be gained from seeing the exact way im doing it. Relying on doing it the exact same as me would be a hinderance rather than a help. The explanation is better as viewers can apply it to their specific key as it wont look exactly like mine. Thanks though :)
Thanks I popped a key off and all 3 pieces came apart, your explainer just saved me!

This was so helpful. I got the top off and the little pieces underneath when I removed it they came apart and at 11pm I was tired and I walked away from it. I googled this this morning and I was able to get it back in and it is working now. Thanks you much. This is my wifes work computer and the number 3 stopped working and she blew it out and it still didn't work. I had older stuff appart but I couldn't wreck her computer on a work day and when I was having a problem getting it back in I thought I bet it's simple if you know how and the video was just what I needed her front clip was a little different but I got it. I was thinking this plastic is so fragile and I don't know where I will find it or a replacement keyboard on the weekend I had a usb keyboard as a back up but she's so use to this layout I think she would have had issues with a standard desktop keyboard if there is a standard. Thanks again.

Thanks for this video! I have successfully cleaned out the gunk beneath my arrow keys that was making them not register, and got them back on without incident. However, you might want to let people know that at least on Lenovo Y700 ideapads, the plastic bits beneath the narrower keys on the right side of the keyboard (the arrow and number pad keys) are mounted sideways compared with the rest of them, and in this case, the screwdriver needs to come in from above or below, rather than from the side.
Glad your all set :) Always here if needed !!
Hey, I have an Ideapad, and my A key falls off when I press it near the top of it, and it brings out the white plastic with it too, im not sure if the problem is in the small metal bits that hold the white plastic flaps down?
@@nicklassthr5147 If the Retainer Clip is falling out then its either an issue with the metal keyboard pins being bent out of place, the Retainer Clip being damaged, or the Retainer Clip not being installed properly.
@@PC_Monkey I'm going to take it apart and see if I can find which is the issue. the metal bits seem fine? I'll check them out

Thanks so much! I was looking at this to see if I could pop back my left arrow keys (one of the little clasps is broken, so it seems like I probably can't, at least well enough to use it for PC gaming). When it comes to getting another key, how close does the keyboard have to be in order to be compatible?
They have to be the exact same key and the exact same retainer clip unfortunately :(
You are correct , replacing complete keyboard is very risky , it is not replaceable. Better replace faulty keys only is the easy solution. I think inside membarane keyboard usually not prone to failure. Good explanation for that.

Good video. One comment on this is that there are 4 metal tabs that the plastic scissors clip into. These tabs are not very sturdy and when you try to clip the scissors back in you may flatten one of the tabs. So if the key doesn't snap in, take a close look by zooming in with your phone camera. Often they can be straightened with a sturdy pair of tweezers.
