    Check the "engineering details" section of the owners manual. Rain mode gives you
    * reduced torque in low gears (doesn't specify which gears)
    * softer throttle response
    * max engine braking
    * max traction control
    * stoppie control (rear lift off assistant)
    * max wheelie control
    * softest dynamic damping control
    the big thing to notice is that you still have access to max power, just not in lower gears.
    disclaimer: I don't own this bike

      It dampens 1-3 from 60%-80% power, respectively, though the manual really suggests it's torque reduction, not horsepower reduction. It also changes the throttle response from "by wire" to "linear" (acting more like a carburetor).
      I can tell you rain mode is beastie for "what it is".

    What comes to rain mode or any electronic ride/drive assistant, they are good things to exist. But none of those systems can never defy the laws of physics. In my opinion modern cars and motorcycles can be far more dangerous than 15y old vehicles. People trust too much on ESD, EPS, ABS, TCS and so on. NONE of those can save you if you try to break the laws of physics.

      I can tell you from experience, you are wrong. We all like to think that raw is better and teaches us to control the machine. You actually have a better path to learning the limits of the machine with that new bike. You can feel the nanny mods kick in and you can learn to push that limit without triggering it. As an example: On a wet road out of a T junction and hard turn, I gunned the throttle on my 2022 bike, traction control kicked in and I learned the limits without dropping the bike. I have not done it since. I know the limits of my bike, I just did not drop it to learn it.

    I'm from Spain where you can find not only wet, but sometimes frozen roads (at night temperature can go under 0ºC sometimes in some places and there's a ton of humidity) and the only thing that saves you from falling is conservative riding, precise gas control and much attention to the road. No rain mode makes you safe if you don't ride properly

    I started on a 2021 GSXR 1000. I started in C mode and TC on 10 and rode it for 1000 miles. Turned it to A mode left the TC on 10 for another 1000 miles now TC is set at 5 and I’ve put an additional 4 k miles on it in my first season. Getting a small bike, perhaps even a tiny bike, is basically an investment for future you, and that's the way it has traditionally been. However, Keith Code's CA Superbike School mentioned that their crash rate dropped by about 80% when they switched to BMW S1000RR's from, I think, R7's or perhaps Kawasaki 600/650. So perhaps an S1000RR might actually be the correct choice if you have deep pockets.
      Or just get a Suzuki DRZ400SM, get a trackday at a supermoto track, and call it a day.

    3:30 you're referring to "rate of change" which doesn't reduce the power of the motorcycle but rather how fast the tires can accelerate and decelerate. That's not traction control, by the way, because even with perfect traction the computer will not allow acceleration beyond a certain factor regardless of, um, traction. That hesitation you feel is simply the computer allowing for the inertia of a wheel slowing down on closed throttle; simply holding the throttle partially open and then whacking it open should therefore show no hesitation ie you're not spinning the wheel in one direction, stopping it, and then turning it the other direction.

    I really just don't have the time or wish to buy a cheesy starter bike, be tired of it in a matter of weeks. Then probably having to sell it at a loss, people say you can sell your starter bike for what you bought it for ... no you can't used is used. I don't know one Texan that is going to pay new price for something used ... sorry. Not only that but if you bought a starter bike, you likely didn't have enough money to buy something bigger anyway, unless it's over a decade old. So yeah I would buy an 08 GSXR, or Busa, turn the thing down and respect the crap out of it, and not have to deal with all that buy sell, oh now I have no motorcycle crap. I get the reasons not to, I am 45 years old and don't really look at life the same way I did when i was in my 20's. I feel I am a mature enough individual to keep in mind that even a small displacement motorcycle can maul the shit out of you. But if you make say ... walmart money, suggesting they go through all of that rigmarole doesn't seem financially lucrative. I'm sure plenty of people in a similar situation get stuck with small displacement motorcycles, because they sit down ... realize the loss they are going to take on their starter bike ... realize that they are going to have to get something really old for what they will get ... then decide they may as well just stick with the 300 "A little longer". I know that's how it would go for me.

    I’ve been riding since I was 14 on and off really but since I was 17 almost constantly on a 1600cc Indian and then I got a Ducati Supersport and got into a dumb wreck that was at low speed and due to a dumb mistake I knew not to do but was in a rush. I planned on getting a Penigale v2 but I have the opportunity to get a brand new s1k for very very cheap and while I feel terrified Ik I felt like that about 300s for awhile . If I ride in a lower power mode but with the aids turned down to normal I think I should be good it’s just ik I speed way to much on my Ducati and I’m scared if I hop on this I will get ahead of myself and do 180😭 and die. I’m 19 btw and been around bikes my whole life. Started on a 125cc from the 90’s and then a Indian chief bobber dark horse then my Supersport but I just don’t know if my riding has been as consistent and meaningful enough for me to hop on a 1k

    Rain mode on my Monster 937 (Urban Mode) dropped HP to 70 from 110 and also dialed down all 6 of the driver aids…could a new rider ride that bike, yes. In actual pouring rain commuting on city streets in traffic the rain mode actually kept the bike grounded. Fast forward two seasons and try the Wet mode on the 153hp Street Fighter V2…nope!!! I will swap down to Touring Mode for a little more traction and ABS but I actually prefer to have my normal throttle response over the Wet Mode 110hp. Like you said…you still need to bring the A Game. Also riding in rain - you know how cars don’t see you in the dry, yes, that times 1000. Be SUPER defensive in traffic in rain.

    I own this bike and there's 4 modes that allow progressively shorter throttle responses in the 5-8k rev range. Rain mode will also limit the horsepower to about 160. And yes, Yam's right about this bike. It simply out matches 99% of the riders skill level. Unless you're truly a professional rider you will never utilize the full capacity of the s1000rr and you're likely to die trying (see track mode).
    And yes, I'd buy it all over again.

Now starting on a 200+ hp motorcycle is just silly, if you are not a racer at the amateur/intermediate level......a 140 hp 1000 cc motorcycle would be a strict maximum for anybody as a starter bike

    I started off on a 2022 BMW s1000r
    M and I had no issues. It really depends on a person’s intelligence and maturity in my opinion. Also, BMWs are very refined and technologically advanced machines so that definitely is a game changer. Motorcycles have come a long way since the early 2000s.

    If you respect the bike you’ll be fine.

      You’re not going to die just because you have a liter bike. My first ride on a liter bike was an 02 gsxr, now that would put some hair on your nuts. Rain mode + respect for machine = fairly safe if you’re not an idiot.
