  • Giethoorn - the "Dutch Venice" (Water tour)
Would you sometimes like to leave your usual surroundings behind and jump into the world of fairy tales at least for a while? In fact, you can even do this in real life, because there is a tiny village in the Netherlands that looks exactly like a beautifully made painting!
The biggest specialty of Giethoorn lies in the fact that there are no cars inside at all, but not because of strict regulations. Instead of roads, the village has small canals in a network of 6 and a half km, which is also the only transport route for the residents. So anyone who wants to visit another town, or even just a resident living in a distant part of the village, is forced to jump into a boat and row across with noble simplicity.
If a resident still wants his own car, he can park it at the very edge of the city, where he can then go out by boat and continue his journey. Many people call this area the Dutch Venice because of the fabulous canals. By the way, the small village itself is an hour and a half drive from Amsterdam, so if you were to visit it in the future, it is worth making a small detour here. The small village is inhabited by approximately 3,000 people. In the spring, people love it because of the flowers, but in winter, when the canals freeze, a lot of people skate on them.
