Ump wanted a reason to toss him. He was going to stare at him until he got what he wanted.
if it’s that easy to toss you then you deserve it.
How do we know he wasn't looking right past him, like next to Bum's head, over his shoulder?
I saw one man reject an honest, open hearted invitation by another man to maybe find out if there's actually something between the two and the other guy couldn't handle the rejection
If an ump stared at me like that I wouldn’t tell them anything and not give them a reason to toss me out of the game. Obviously, Bumgarner was in the wrong for telling that ump that he would f him up but still MLB needs to do something about some of these umps that probably get a quota for having a certain number of ejections each year.

I mean sure it was weird, but that player did it to himself. They were already parting ways. All he had to do was keep walking or even just ask him why he's staring at him so weird. I think earlier this month Bumgarner pitched and the umpire was there again to check his hand… but Bumgarner went to a different umpire to get his hand check since he didn’t want him to do it again.

If I had to pick one aspect of Baseball that I hate, it's the umpires and how much power they have to ruin a game. They can sink a team simply because they're butthurt.

I think the worst part of this is the immediate toss. Doing some creepy shit in a sad attempt to intimidate someone who got upset at your colleague's mistakes looks bad enough, but tossing him as soon as he even questions the weird intimidation tactics is so much worse. Whether the ump *intended* to bait Bumgarner into behavior that could justify his ejection is debatable, but you can't deny that the optics are just so, so unbelievably bad.
The ejection wrecks the dbacks next series, against a division rival no less, they had to deplete the entirety of the bullpen for that game. So lame and this ump needs to get some sort of fired the fuck out of umping ever again.

Well, when you say "F you" to an umpire, that's grounds for ejection. But it seems to me that the umpire deliberately provoked the reaction.

Keep in mind, that same umpire would probably, while working home plate, eject a pitcher who stared at him the wrong way, even if the pitcher "never said a word".

The fact that that umpire was trying to justify it because he didn't say a word is absolutely absurd. He knew he was antagonizing Madison he knew he was going to get a reaction from Mad Bum. I don't know how this dude has a job still. And as a result of this every time umpires screw up now players are getting in the umpire's face and they are letting them have it. And of course we know the sorry excuse for an MLB commissioner is going to do literally nothing about this because he doesn't care. And if they won't fire this umpire he needs to be suspended without pay and he needs to talk to Madison bumgarner directly apologize to his face and admit that he did wrong. And if he doesn't want to comply with that then he can continue to be suspended without pay.
out of the past 8 seasons, the season of this ejection ('22) was the only one where this umpire didn't work in the postseason (and thus didn't get paid for the extra games)

It really is. I played baseball for years and watched it most of my life. MLB is a joke with the STUPID contracts and the fact that that when covid hit and the public needed a distraction the players went on strike because they wanted more money.
If MLB had fights like hockey I'd put up with it but the benches clearing almost-brawls are just pathetic.
The problem with baseball is, you go for some snacks, and boom you miss the entire offensive output of your team for a game.

He sued for racial discrimination not being a crew chief and not getting picked to umpire the World Series. The mlb essentially said it’s because he sucks at his job but we can’t fire him because of the union

Damn, you're dead on. The ump's supposedly on the side of enforcing the law, but does it selectively. When he feels a colleague is slighted, rather than being dispationately dedicated to justice and objectivity, attempts to provoke the subject of his ire by manipulating the unequal power dynamics and his own broad powers. He then jumps at the first sign of resistance to entrap Mad Bum. It's every issue people have with the police, but without the deadly and life-altering consequences.

Umpires should be subject to suspensions for their actions just the same as players are.
I’m an Uber driver and I picked up a college umpire. He said that umpires watch your breakdowns and have an inside joke about not ending up on one of your videos. Keep it up Jomboy, you’re making an impact!

We definitely need to have some accountability for umpires with situation like this. it seems like pretty much they could get away with anything because of there power trip and it’s not fair. Also when he was the one that instigated the situation by staring at him for that long and when the player reacted then kicks him out the game really uncalled for and unprofessional as an umpire.
Teams need to walk off the field when Umps frequently manufacture a reason to eject someone early in a BS way and ruin the game. If the umpire isn't there for a baseball game, there surely is no need for professional baseball teams to be there.

It's because if you're up in someone's face arguing with them as managers some times do, the bill of their cap will might contact the ump and that's an automatic ejection iirc even if your mouth and closeness is staying on the "not thrown out" side of the line. I'm certain managers have pecked at the forehead of umps with their bill, I just can't recall any specific incidents. But I'd start with a Billy Martin or similar. ;)

Between this and the Schwarber-Angel Hernandez incident, there's going to be another player-umpire incident that will HAVE to call into question what the Umpire Union is doing. This is getting out of hand. They are making the game all about them and protecting BAD umps
A fifth of the way into the season and MLB is seeing player-ump interactions escalating in severity faster than ever. At this rate, there will be a fight between an official and a player by the All Star game.
The MLB needs to terminate the contract with the umpire union. It makes the umps untouchable. If the umps won't participate unless they are in a union then guess what? There are plenty of umps in other leagues that would gladly seize the opportunity. No idea why these umpires think they are not replaceable.

Bumgardner shouldn't have taken the bait, but that was some manipulative shit by that ump. There needs to be a system in place to punish behavior like this from umpires.

That was a direct attempt to intimidate. He wasn't staring at him to creep him out, it was to provoke him so he'd do exactly what he did. That's pretty shameful for a game official.

No it wasn’t. He was staring at him to see if he would crack because he knew he had shit on his hand. Which he damn near did. I’d say he cracked him a good 95% he didn’t even have the balls to look him in the eye which is all the ump wanted but he knew he couldn’t do it because he was cheating.

Since neither happened the only logical conclusion is the umpire was trying to get a reaction out of him.

Maybe he only had a slight amount of it on his hand, enough to be effective, but borderline undetectable, which would make complete sense if he wanted to not attract attention.

There needs to be standardized time or methods to examine the pitchers hands. Usually the players overreact, but this was uncomfortably weird. Apparently you gotta be half a psychopath to be an MLB Ump.

As an official of another sport, I roll my eyes when spectators boo officials because they think a ref is trying to insert himself into a game. This instance is absolutely a ref inserting himself into the game and his massive ego taking over and ruining a game. That guy shouldn't be on another MLB game - go back to college with that bush league bull crap. The league surely won't say anything public about it.
