My favorite Minigame in RPGS is probably Chocobo Hot n Cold from FF9. It's very fun and Simple, with catchy music, and the rewards really help with the main game. And who doesn't like a treasure hunt? Every time I replayed the game I clean out the first Forest the very moment I have acces to it before continuing with the main quest.

The execution of Triple Triad is so great because it ties back into what you're doing in the main game with how you can turn cards into more useful resources. I feel similarly about fishing in the Breath of Fire games, which can be a great source of healing items. I also appreciate anything that tests your main game skills in a different context, like the sprinting minigames in Wild Arms. I was never a fan of all the junk you have to do to proceed in FFVII though, which often has little to do with how you've been playing the game up to that point.

I don't mind them if they are NOT required AT all that's what made Partners in time for that Mario RPG a pain in the ass since nearly EVERY boss in game has a REQUIRED mini game BEFORE the fight and some of those were TIMED based mini games.
That's why I NEVER beat Breath of Fires 3 and 4 BOTH have required mini games ON a TIMER.

I haven't played that many JRPGs, but I remember a mini-game in Atelier Ayesha that I liked and really looked forward to. It's called "Thrilling Treasure Contest." The goal is to find an item in the world that will satisfy the jury's desires. It can be an item from a specific category or one of the more expensive ones. I enjoyed seeing that my opponents and the jury were not just random NPCs; they were all characters I had met in the game before. Maybe there is nothing particularly special about this mini-game, but I genuinely enjoyed it.

When I was a teenager. I gave 2+ hours of my life to the lightning strike minigame. And holy hell. I felt a sneeze coming on as I was dodging and I can't remember the number but around 100 of them or so, I sneeze. I was able to keep one of my eyes open a bit, I dodged one as the sneeze was almost done/I was recovering. When I missed one from giving my brother a high five, from not messing up. I didn't leave him hanging but I never got that sigil or whatever.

On the MMO front, FFXIV is loaded with a number of minigames. Jumping puzzles, mahjong, Triple Triad, Chocobo Races and Raising, dodging minigames, Air Force One...and even some season exclusive ones, like rhythm minigames for New Years, an old dungeon crawler a few years back for the anniversary event, etc etc. They've even wanted to add Blitzball to the game for the past few years.
Overall, minigames can just make an RPG even more fun to play, and we need more of them, a lot more.

Minigames that makes the game world feel so much bigger and expansive and full of stuff to do really helped make these games feel like you're exploring full, living worlds. 21:35 I"ve had a hard time trying to get that Venom Shot by playing the mini-game due to my visual impairment. The memories that show up as text makes it difficult for me to concentrate and find where the memories are located all over the screen, even with white text against a bright background due to ship's lighting. If the memories are surrounded by a blue background for a dialog, that mini-game would be a whole lot easier for me. But the developers of Final Fantasy X does not want to do that and the gaming industry as a whole does not care about people with visual disabilities.

Blitzball (FFX) is a minigame that could be released as small indie game.. I remeber I on Oculus Quest played very similiar game in VR and online against real players.. its F2P game, but I dont remember its name, but it was really amazing..

I’m pretty sure that Blitzball is actually based on a real NES franchise called Captain Tsubasa which was only released in Japan. Well the first game was translated as Techmo soccer.

@@GamingBroductions I did! I really wish more games or RPGs would use new mini games or just any mini games. I liked Fairy Village in BOF and the Golden Saucer in FF7.

The butterfly mini game in X is actually the hardest. The chocobo one is unfair. If the RNG is not on your side it's impossible to win

Mini games are pretty much a make or break within a video game. But when you play a video game which doesn't have mini games or challenges or missions it just feels too too boring. Mini games give the video game more personality. Especially themed ones.
I love when video games try to find silly exuses/reasons in the story to push a mini game on the player (it can be funny out of context)
I like when the mini games feel more related and connected to the story world, really creative ✨ But then again, any kind of creativity and ideas is welcome!
I just got kh bbs platinum the other day. I had to play the annoying mini games more times than i can count, i even mastered them completely, winning races, making ice cream, playing monopoly, fruit ball, unversed missions
As much as i was complaining and stuff it all felt like it's made with passion (even if some of it really suck) the visuals animations the music the ideas etc.. just felt like I've went on a complete journey!
Really, mini games do add up to the world of the video game and the overall experience. (Also It'd be much appreciated if the devs hid some ways to cheat the mini game getting high scores the unintended way, cause let's be real we'd all get back to something if we knew there's a chance )

A few of these mini-games were pretty good (looking at you triple triad and snowboarding game) but I'm really glad that developers have mostly moved away from this sort of RPG design because I hate a lot of these mini-games so much that they just about ruin the game they are a part of for me (off the top of my head I'm thinking BoF4, FFX, tetra master section in FFIX and really all of the FFX mini-games).
